This is definitely due to the quality the trailer itself vs the excitement for the set. The trailer for Final Fantasy is currently below 500k views while the first look is close to 800k. I hope numbers like this encourage more high quality trailers.

  • special place in heaven

When I first saw this the comments were locked. I wonder why? I scrolled through the comment section now and there are so many positive comments. They probably got brigaded at first?

  • That's what happens when you get the Jim Henson Company, have fun, and the song is catchy.

Hope WOTC can see the opportunity for a YouTube series in the MTG universe w muppets and big guest stars as planeswalkers. “Featuring ScarJo as Tamiyo, Brad Pitt as Cloud, and Jack Black as The Buster Sword”.

Do you know how much it costs to get Jack Black to sing about everything he sees?

I'm starting to wonder if it's in his contracts that he has to be able to sing or perform in each movie he appears in. I'll do no research and have my theory confirmed in my own brain if this is true in the anaconda movie.

I think it's more that if you're looking for a comedy role with a song, he's high up the list of actors you'd want - and if you cast him for something without a song, he's fuckin' Jack Black, write something for him to sing!

I'm sure in some way it is, much in the way The Rock and Jason Stathom have clauses that say their characters can't lose fights (which is why in Hobbs & Shaw any fight they are up against each other it's a draw.) Early on it was charming, but the Minecraft movie really showed Black's shtick is starting to wane, but perhaps that's because the past few movies of his haven't been great.

Does he sing in king kong

He just did some music work for Bob's Burgers. Song's an s-tier banger though.

They should do it like Christmas Carol and have a human actor playing Jace 100% seriously and everyone else are muppets.

Post Malone has to be in the one w the Hobbit or LOTR

    That’s the idea.

Jack Black should absolutely play a cursed sword. That would be a great time.

They did with muppets and we got a big scandel that lasted 2 weeks over big tits and a series show no one watched lol

    Certainly you mean Sesame Street?

I mean, Jim Henson (as much as he loved performing) loved the music and singing portions of any production. His son Brian for sure takes after his dad like that.

I had to go give labyrinth a rewatch after seeing the trailer. The JHC do some quality work.

I really think the JHC was the only reason that movie worked, much in the same way the animatronics of the FNAF movies are the best part of those films. Such a shame that the Dark Crystal show got cancelled so quickly.

It had Bowie too, that helped.

Honestly, if he was still in it, but all the puppets were gone I don't think it would have worked as well. He was right for what it was, but put in real people and it might have come across more creepy.

Also the cards and art are all so cool

When Magic does music, it's all bangers. The Kamigawa album was all bangers, and New Capenna's album was the best part of the entire set

No fuckin way! Never thought we'd get a Muppet style MTG trailer lol

  • Good. I've worked in games marketing for a bit and whenever we did anything that had this much love poured into it, the entire team was praying it would do numbers so we could continue doing cool and creative shit over the paint by numbers trailers.

  • It's pretty smart that it's a song, which you can listen to multiple times. The WAR trailer was also worth a rewatch.

It's also worth sending to your friends. This trailer is fun even for people who don't know Lorwyn or Magic.

"This is the next set, look at the cards" Is not as interesting to rewatch. Magic also has trailers that are just listing products to buy buy buy.

It basically feels like a Fraggle Rock mini-episode, in all the best ways.

Yes. Roommate doesn’t play but loved the trailer and then turns out she knows two of the new artists

I meant to tell my sister about this for a few days now. She loves the muppets. I finally remembered to mention this to her today, and she told me she saw it days ago, and thought it was great.

Yea, the WAR trailer brought me back in to MTG after a few years out. Due in no small part to the song.

Then the Eldraine one was equally as amazing!

Neon Dynasty is my favorite and I don't see anything ever coming close.

The fight with Jin Gitaxias is so good.

That was pretty dope. I think around 1:15, the animation was top tier.

I wasn't a fan of the singing, but it could grow on me.

The set does have some banger cards. Honestly, the video made me appreciate Reality Chip even more. I might read the lore and figure out what's going on. Dope video.

Yeah this was very easy for me to send to friends who know nothing about magic.

It's been the Hearthstone strategy for a lot pf years until they dropped in quality some time ago, not sure if they recovered it

The FIN trailer felt like it just was just advertising collectable mementos.

I shared this with someone who doesn't play magic, and she was absolutely delighted watching it.

  • ONE LIGHT

    ONE DARK

Two worlds, a world apart! (Fixed it)

But somehoooow in our dreeams, We share the skyyyyyyyy¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡ 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻

    a world apart*

  • No lie, about 30% of the time it when comes up and my finger is reflexively hovering over the Skip Ad button, I just decide “you know what? I guess we’re watching this for the next 3 minutes.” One because I want whatever automated metrics exist to register it as a “good ad” and register interest in Lorwyn as high… but Two, because it’s just a banger.

I would watch an entire season of this show. Scrap whatever Planeswalker-centric thing they’ve got on their fourth attempt at Netflix, and just throw the money at Henson Studios instead. Stick Fleem in there, and run with it.

I want to see Moira as a slug commander in the muppets secret lair

    "Partner with whoever has shoulders."

    I back this 200000%

"Stick Fleem in there and run with it" makes me think you're exactly who wizards should, but will never hire

whenever Fleem isn't on screen, people should ask "Where's Fleem?"

    Hey, where's Perry Fleem?

    He's a semi-canon, flying, creation of Goben

That furless little menace makes mayhem and costs go away

He's got more than just those things, he's a goblin and a 3/3

And the redditers swoon whenever they hear him say:

    "I'm not Loot"

    He's Fleem, re-Fleem-er of Fleemposts

(You can call him Green Goblin)

Fleem (I said you can call him Green Goblin)

    Nope he's Fleem

Hot take: If Fleem and Loot swapped places 1 for 1 in the story people would hate Fleem and love Loot. The only reason Loot is hated is because he seems forced and the only reason Fleem is loved is because he seems grassroots.

IDK I think design is also a big deal - there's a card with a slightly less pushed anime design for loot and I think he's rlly cute there. Still very anime mascot but feels a lot less hyper-marketable, similar to fleem's design.

For real. My daughter loves Loot and I'm sad that he's probably gonna be sidelined after all the lashback

I partly agree with this, I think Fleem has real fans (any borbo in fiction will) but I do think people pushed Fleem out of some weird backlash to Loot.

Loot feels forced but I'm overall ambivalent on that aspect. Also the name.... but what really bothers me is that he is uncomfortable to look at and really feels like he is a ripoff of a League of Legends character.

Well to be fair, I would probably end up making a bunch of terrible (but ethical) business decisions and a bunch of terrible (but fun) game design decisions.

So it’s probably for the best if I just stick to my core competency of providing therapy to troubled computers.

This could would be great. It would give the vorthos community something they’ve been wanting for…forever, and if, it was successful, it would show WotC that the general population can actually become interested in WotC IP instead of trying to lure them in with fucking Furby and Kpop Demon Hunter cards.

God I wish I was getting this as my ad and not “left foot right foot left foot right foot” all the damn time.

I watch this ad just about whenever it's served to me too. So fun. I hope MTG does more stuff like this in the future.

Fuck it, give me a late night talk show with Fleem as host, put animal on drums, and interview different characters for upcoming set releases along with stand-up from planewsalkers and legends, musical guests, even spots with designers to discuss design decisions. It can be like a magic themed Muppet Show. I'd watch every time.

You know, it probably wouldn't cost an outrageous amount to convert WeeklyMTG into this format with just a single Muppet host and it would be fantastic.

Although the regular guests would be funny too. I want to see Muppet Blake and Muppet Gavin.

MUPPET MARO AND MUPPET KIBLER COMMENTARY LIKE STATLER AND WALDORF

  • I'm not from the United States, so I don't have much interest in the Muppets; here, it's 31 Minutos territory.

But when I saw this trailer, the first thing that came to mind was The Dark Crystal. Oh my god, I love that movie, and the Netflix series was a gem that sadly won't be continued. This trailer, besides the song, and the use of puppets in this version, filled me with the same vibes as that beautiful film.

Jim Henson was responsible for the Muppets and The Dark Crystal (and I believe Labyrinth too?), so you are 100% correct

    and I believe Labyrinth too?

Yes, although legendary fantasy artist Brian Froud (who's son Toby was baby Toby in the movie) was involved in the goblin designs as well for that one

Toby also joined Henson as one of the production managers too, so likely father and son worked on this.

I always wondered who was pulling the strings on the big white muppet aka David Bowie's codpiece.

    Same company.

I'm almost 100% sure those backup dancers for the Lorwyn side are reused podlings from Dark Crystal!

the series was SO good and I was heartbroken when it was cancelled

    justice for Hup!

These, and the films mentioned (Dark Crystal, and Labyrinth), aren’t really muppets. These are the work of the Jim Henson Creature Shop. They’ve always been a bit darker/more mature. The Witches, The Storyteller, and more.

Jim was always about adult entertainment, but made some stuff accessible to kids, done with that audience in mind (Sesame Street and Fraggle Rock being the biggest). There’s a lot out there, hope more check it out thanks to this video.

I need more dark crystal :(

  • Serious question for those who are more familiar with youtube...this full video plays as an ad for me on youtube constantly. Do those views count?

They do, I was not aware this was being run as a pre-run ad before posting this.

To its credit I did watch it all the way through once when it came up as an ad, and people here have said the same.

When ads are actually entertaining and not slop people watch them. Who woulda thunk.

Egg Inc had it as an ad. It's on mobile games

Personally I've been getting the ad like crazy since its release. Granted, I often get ads for Magic sets so it's not unique in that regard. But a trailer getting more views could just mean that WOTC is paying for more ads for a set rather than it actually being popular. I guess the positive spin is that even if that were the case, it at least means WOTC is actually promoting the set and not trying to bury it.

Only if people watch a good chunk of it. If they skiip it the views dont count

How does one get high quality ads like that? 😔

That's how I watched it. It auto played before another video but I did watch the whole thing. So as an AD it worked.

  • I mean it think it can be both but the quality pushes it heads and tails above what we have had before

I think the Tarkir and Edge of Eternities trailers were good, I think it takes a while to rebuild their reputation after the disasters that were Outlaws at Thunder Junction, Duskmourn, and Aetherdrifts trailers.

The Duskmourn trailer was a lot of fun, IMO, and I feel at a total mismatch with what I've seen people say about it. The junction of 'back-and-forth cuts of various types of horror-imagery short film interspersed with Nashi trying to make his way through the House' really clearly sets the scene for 'this will pull from various iterations of the horror genre, and be set in a hugely claustrophobic, vast mansion'.

Aetherdrift tried to pull a certain brand of humor ten years too late and wasn't visually interesting; Thunder Junction was at least a well-directed and fun little action piece and only about five years too late for its main inspiration.

I think Nashi's voice giving the Duskmourn trailer a childish feel pulls it down, plus the animation of Nashi isn't that great.

I think Thunder Junction felt like it wasn't fully baked and needed a lot more polish.

Duskmourn's failure is it was marketed as something like Silent Hill and we got Friday the 13th For Kids

The original Eldraine trailer is still my all time favourite. Even disconnected from magic it's a fantastic short film.

War of the Spark trailer for me. It was epic.

Did love what they did for Eldraine too.

The War of the Spark trailer was great in that set the the stakes of the endgame of years of ploty-plot-plot story in a really simple to read video that had an emotional punch for anyone who watched it. In some ways that's actually a lot harder than just doing [basic concept of the fictional world in a creative way] as they did with this Lorwyn trailer or the Eldraine trailer (which I agree were all timers)

I also love the Wilds of Eldraine trailer.

(Although it might be just because I love the various characters)

I liked Duskmourn's trailer, because it gave me the feeling of a kinda cheesy preshow of a horror themed ride in an amusement park. But that is because I love that kind of stuff.

Tbf whatever metrics they were using, I never saw any of those.

    This, I saw and loved.

The Neon Dynasty one had pretty good quality too imo.

It may just cater to weebs though!

  • I just think it’s a really, really, clever way to easily communicate the theme.

It sets the tone for a set that is going to take itself a little less seriously and focus on the return to whimsical Magic as opposed to “Doomsday” sets.

Coming off the momentum of easily the most popular Universe Beyond set, Lorwyn Eclipsed could be the biggest in-universe set of the decade.

Lorwyn Eclipsed could be the biggest in-universe set of the decade.

I hope so. Lorwyn/Shadowmoor was is favorite block. It was a bit controversial at the time but has aged really well. The flavor was fantastic and while some of the mechanics didn't quiet land they did set up future improved versions that did.

If it doesn't do well here I doubt we will ever return again, and the plane is far too interesting to suffer that fate.

Agreed. I really hope so. Now is the time to show that love put into a real magic set is what we really want.

easily the most popular Universe Beyond set

Final Fantasy? Because Avatar did well but it was nowhere near the popularity of FF.

AtlA might have resonated with enfranchised players a good deal more, feeling so "close to Magic" and whatnot. But yeah while it by all accounts seems to be selling great, absolutely nothing's ever gonna come close to FF's degree of block-busting.

  • SHUT UP SNAKE!

    Gets me everytime

    also SHRED IT, CRAGG!

And the fact that Cragg gives snake a look of death after he says it.

    Haha exactly

They missed the chance at “Shut up snake “ - counterspell, opponent must pay two mana or it fizzles. It’ll be in the muppet SLD

I'd buy the shit out of a Muppet SLD

Camilla the chicken w the Hare Apparent card text

  • I’ve lost my brain cells and can’t find the edit button on mobile:

For reference, March of the Machine’s trailer is sitting at 4.3 Million Views. Given the trailers performance it’s actually likely the video out performs that before the set launches.

Beyond that there is Phyrexia: All Will Be One at 4.6 Million, War of the Spark at 14 Million and Innistrad Crimson Vow at 19 Million.

War of the Spark trailer was really something, is good by itself but is hard not to cry some lil tears if you know the plot and what's going on.

Plus the slow version of the linkin park song kinda slaps

Conversely Midnight Hunt is its own entirely self-contained mini story, like Blizzard cinematics of old.

The WAR trailer was next level, and this one is also next level.

  • It's definitely because of quality. Magic has done a lot of shitty trailers before that you watch and inmediately forget but this is one you'll remember like War of the Spark or the first Eldraine.

The Neon Dynasty anime one is good too

How is no one here talking about the NEO trailer tho? That one is probably my favorite one after WAR and now this one.

Forgot about that one but yeah, it was good too.

  • What excellent visuals, banger music and good lore integration does to an ad.

  • I'm still listening to it on loop

One light, one dark, two worlds a world apart!

  • It was ridiculous and bold. You can tell there was a huge effort to produce it. Its brilliant.

  • A return to classic lore is always welcome.

One might even say that this set is a lore win.

  • Been starting to respond to good night with “it’s always night in shadowmoor.”

    SHUT UP SNAKE

  • I have been craving a morning mug of muck for like 5 daya straight now

  • It was great. I wish they put this much love into real magic sets all the time.

  • It's the best, it deserves even more views honestly

  • i am so glad this exists after the buttsitude that was the EOE trailer

like i love eoe as a set but they could have done so much better with the trailer

  • It is a banging trailer, I crack-up when he yells at the snake.

  • Ok, but think how many views a Muppet Elesh Norn singing would’ve gotten!

  • The song has been stuck in my head all week

  • I have lost track how many times i've listened to it

  • Friends that don't even play MTG have been sending me the trailer, you know it's hitting

  • Does the boggart in this ad have a card he’s featured on?? Or Moira the slug??? I want cards for both of them now, I loved this so much

  • It's got me wanting more stuff like Dark Crystal 😞.

  • It’s shown up as an ad for me several times, I wonder if those are those are being counted as views?

  • THE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN STARVED OF GOOD MUPPETS FOR YEARS. ONE SIP DRIVES THEM TO HAPPINESS.

  • The mtg spotlight in Toronto is in a month and is already completely full (it's Lorwyn Eclipsed sealed).

    People are excited.

  • Well, nothing will ever surpass Theros block for me. Those three trailers were so incredibly immersive... I still remember them almost word for word.

When does a hero's journey begin? The moment you step outside the safety of your home, or when you realize the fight has just begun?

  • That's what happens when you respect your in universe with high quality artistic crossovers instead of shitty IP products.

  • The song goes hard

  • Damn that was actually a really awesome trailer/song, the set looks pretty good too

  • I'm not really a fan of Lorwyn, but this trailer is awesome

  • This set is clearly being made with love. We need more of this and less soulless cash grab UB.

  • Shut up snake!

  • Real awesome stuff! :) I love it!

  • Props to everyone that worked on this, it's fantastic.

  • It's almost as if we players want in-universe product over UB!

People want high quality art done by experts that care.

The difference between FF and Spiderman is abysmal.

But yeah i love how good Lorwyn seems to be.

Funny enough the Spider-Man trailer is at 1 million views while Final Fantasy still sits below half that. It’s why I’m not trying to view the trailer as an actual measure of interest or demand.

i mean the trailer of FF is kinda generic and mid. A good trailer can grasp a lot of interest as the most watched trailer is from a set that is not well rewarded.

    there are trailers for UB?

Or perhaps, stab in the dark here, it just means this trailer is more well made and unique than that one and you’re reading too far into it

This has nothing to do with the other but good try though.

  • and i am 200 of those views

  • "march of the machine"

lol not a great comparison point

The set with the highest viewed trailer before it isn’t a good point of comparison? What else would there be to use?

  • My spouse has absolutely, definitively no interest in Magic the Gathering at all. If their interest could be negative, it would.

I sent them this trailer because they are a Jim Henson fan. They adored this trailer. They read all the backstory on how it was made they could find. They've brought up to me multiple times how neat they think it was that such a collaboration happened.

This video is how you make a successful project.

  • Ok this is serioulsy amazing.

  • Yeah that thing slaps. Watching it again.

  • It's a great trailer! I've watched it multiple times because it's actually good.

  • The power of whimsy, ladies and gents

  • I've caught myself singing that song so much at work 😭

  • Didn't know there had been set trailers since War of the Spark.

  • I'm so surprised as for new potential players this screams "ok boomer, I'm off to one piece and/or riftbound".

  • This type of trailer is why i quit hearthstone

  • And then next we're gonna get some dumb TMNT cartoon short commercial thing and wonder why it flopped.

  • But will they learn

  • The War of the Spark trailer has 14 million views: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5W9t62t10I

I don't think I had seen the MoM trailer. Just watched it now, and I'm not sure why it is so popular. Imo, it pales in comparison to the War of the Spark trailer, which was brilliant.

Yeah, I feel like there must be something juicing up the MoM trailer, which is pretty shmeh. (Like it's a good ad, but it does really feel like an ad in a way the War of the Spark and Lorwyn trailers don't.) Maybe it was given a higher ad buy.

  • Took me a few days/watches to realize that the Shadowmoor Boggart is performed by Kevin Clash (i.e. Elmo on Sesame Street, 1985-2012)

Huh ... I'm kind of surprised he's still working

  • This trailer goes up with the greats like ELD, WAR, and NEO

  • I really hope we get a secret lair with the puppets

  • Jim Hensons knocked it out of the fucking park like they always do

  • Lorwyn looks like the best set released in a while and gives me hope for Mtg IP's future. I still have hope that this year's UB underperforms and it sends a message to Wotc.

  • This felt like Labrynth with OG MTG love. Stop producing 10 sets a year and I'll go back to buying cards

  • I haven't been excited for Magic in over a year and this has actively reignited a small spark of the roaring flame of love I once had for the game.

  • Great. If this set does numbers and TMNT really does become a second spider man, WOTC may overthink their heavily UB focused 3 year plan.

  • does anyone know what happened to the behind the scene video? it seems to have vanished.

  • It's also a paid ad that has prerolled for me multiple times

  • When you actually do a good job :

  • What a surprise, when a set it's not ad slop for other franchise people like it

  • Prior to watching the trailer I didn't think there'd be a set I cared about this year (started with Bloomburrow) but then the reveals started. The only one I'd figure I'd keep my eye on would be the Hobbit and I don't care for that ip.

I saw that youtube had the trailer and decided to watch it and that was an amazing trailer. I'm really excited for the set now and can't wait for it to release.

  • Ok who at wizard is the " The Dark Crystal" fan ?

  • ……any VP’s from Netflix see this? If they’re looking for something new?

  • In the slop era we live in, it is SO cool that they used real puppetry. I hope this is a learning experience for WotC.

Wouldn't be surprised to see a muppets or Jim Henson SLD soon, now that the two groups have a definite professional relationship.

  • It's almost like people want fantasy in their fantasy card games,

  • And someone told me Magic IP is crap and hence we need 4 UB sets

  • Now if only WOTC could put this much effort and creativity into all of their original IP instead of putting most of their effort into half-assedly rehashing other IP's!

Lol, enjoy your UB slop, downvoters! How are you liking that Spider-Man set?
