Picked up this tikka t3x ACE target today that was traded in. Got it for $1200 out the door. This is my first bolt action so. It’s in .308. Good buy or not? Hardly any signs of wear and on the bore scope it looks like it’s hardly been shot at all.
On the .308 aspect. It’s a fantastic, affordable, and reliable round. Learning on it is not only possible but has lots of upside. The downside is you will eventually have to upgrade to something more reliable for distance. But if you square your fundamentals on a 308 you will be in heaven when you shoot a 6mm
Good to hear that. Makes me excited to get out there and start learning. I don’t mind a challenge and would rather have a more solid skill set moving forward like you stated above. Appreciate the reply!
Hard to go wrong there, have fun with it.
Don’t let the 308 hate bring you down, with modern bullets, it’s still better than it ever was.
The Lapua 175 MaxRange Target GB581 is worth a try if you’re loading your own, great BC and can be loaded out around 2.900” in CIP chambers so you can run it fairly hard.
Very nice! If you are looking for a good muzzle brake, the universal default recommendation is the Area419 Hellfire Match. It's a very effective brake with a nice mounting system to use on pretty much anything. 175gr Federal Gold Medal Match is great ammo for factory rounds, but if you are a handloader Berger 168gr Hybrids and Sierra 169gr Matchkings are fantastic bullets for out to 1k.
Fair enough. In my world you grow up with bolt guns and gas guns are modern toys to be played with. I do appreciate that there are some great precision options, but that has not been my use case.
I’ve really enjoyed the gas gun world. I’ve shot bolt action a little but generally they’re just hunting rifles not somthing like this. I am excited for the change.
I do have an AR that I have added some goodies to. It’s fun to shoot. But for me bolt actions are the king and I really do enjoy them. I am still amazed at the accuracy they can produce. I am indeed from a hunting background, but my whole family really appreciates the precision of these old school tools.
Yeah it's still a great rifle, just a little hindered by the chambering for target shooting. Try to buy your optic, bipod, optic mount, etc. with the mindset of adding weight. Adding mass will keep the recoil down and it will also stabilize it on your bipod or bag.
Right on. One of the reasons .308 is outmatched by 6.5 is the fact that .308 recoils significantly more. A hefty rifle with an effective muzzle device will make it easier for you to stay on target through the rifle's recoil impulse.

and realistically that's as simple as just getting a prefit tikka barrel chambered in 6.5cm
Yeah the .308 to 6.5 pipeline is still GOATED to me as the best strategy to affordably jump in and scale up
Great price for that model!

Very nice 👍🏻 that’s a $1700 gun , so pretty good deal.
That’ll do pig, that’ll do
Get a muzzle break
Tikka: nice
Ace: great choice!
Target: even better!
308: oh
Kidding aside, great rifle at an awesome price. Worst case: it doesn’t shoot and you can rebarrel it for same money as a new one.
Great find! Enjoy and post some pics after getting it sighted in and grouping.
Will do and thanks!
Maybe it's nothing. But I thought I got a good deal on my m1a off GunBroker
Turns out it had an out of battery discharge at one point. Which damaged a piece of the bolt
Things to be weary of with used purchases.
When they OP wants they can get a new barrel, tika action and chassis is definitely worth it

Thanks for the recommendations. I’ve read several posts about people using that brake so I’ll def be picking one up for it.
wish they make a left handed one
Very nice I hadn't seen a black one looks good 👍
Looking at getting one of these as well, stoked for ya!
If this is your first bolt action, how do you presume to know what wear looks like?
Been waiting on this one lol. I have several precision gas guns. I’ve always stayed on that side of the market. I’ve built quite a few over the years.

$1,200.00 is a great buy for that rifle. You should have gotten it in 6.5 though.
I woulda like it in 6.5 but the price was the reason I got it. I figured at that price point my gut told me to get it and not leave it for the next.

Thanks for the knowledge and recommendation. Will definetly kit it with that mentality in mind.

Hit me up if you have access to a 3d printer. I made a bag rider you can print for the ace chassis
I’ll remember this! Thank you. My brother has one I think I’ll get with him on that.
