I washed my starters today (I'm at one month loc'd so far), and while I was drying, I discovered this. I had 6 more that had all clumped together like this at the root. I haven't had my first retwist yet, as it's only been 4 weeks since I started.
Suggestions for how to fix it and stop this from happening again? I separated some by pulling them apart, but they kinda...ripped?
I'm going to have to wash pretty often due to eczema and dermatitis, and I'm worried I'm screwing up my locs before they even have a chance.
You’ll need to separate them in between washes, otherwise during your next retwist your loctician would pull them apart anyway. Just mist your hair so you aren’t dry pulling and you should be good.
Edit: try to pull apart the hair to where it goes as well don’t go in blind or you could be unraveling something
Thank you!
I have accepted that this will happen to a small extent because I use a clarifying shampoo on wash days, and my hair just naturally does that between washes. To make the separation process smooth, I follow up with a moisturizing shampoo and let it sit for about 5 minutes before rinsing out. When my locs are semi-dry, I apply a light oil to my scalp and start separating. Instead of snapping, they just come out of the loc because I moisturized them with the shampoo and oil. Then I wrap the strands around whatever loc they belong to. It's a little annoying, but the process has worked so far for me to reduce breakage.
I did use a clarifying shampoo, so I think you're on to something. I'll try this the next time I wash. Thanks.
This is called marrying and is very normal. Separate your locs gently every time they get wet.
I use loc detangler and pull apart
Thank you
This happens sometimes to me too! I've learned to “comb through” my locs with my fingers every morning after spraying a little water on them. 🥰 helps keep them separated and a little water is great for hydration. Then at night before bed oil your scalp and run through them again. Overall those loc are ready for a retwist for sure! 💖❤️ very beautiful madam! Hope it works out! 🖤🤍✨
