Hi all, I recently got a 30g standard tank and I am really wanting some kuhli loaches. This tank will also be a planted tank, and my first time dealing with live plants. I plan on doing a lot of research on kuhli loaches before getting any, and I would like to have some other fish in the tank as well. I’m asking for just some general advice on what plants kuhli loaches like best, how many kuhli loaches is appropriate for a 30g tank that will have other fish (maybe some tetras and a gourami), and some general care tips on things they like and don’t like.
Thank you all in advance.
If you post over to r/pangio, you may get some responses as well. They are all about eel loaches.
Thank you!
Depends on the environment you’re going for. Kuhli prefer soft sandy substrate, low flow and dimmer light (not saying they can’t be kept in other conditions, this is just closer to their natural environment). I’ve had rough luck with plants like Ludwigia, that require a higher light output. I’ve had great luck with crypts, frogbit and or duckweed, pennywort, ferns, and moss. I’d be open to advice on different plants as well. This is just what has worked for me so far, but I’m sure others will have better suggestions
Thank you, I’ll definitely take this into account.
try using some botanicals my kuhlis love my tannin colored water
Really all that matters with them is hiding spots. I have huge pieces of driftwood they hide under all day. Very cool fish but they’re kind of a cryptid. You’ll see them at night and when feeding. Get 6 and keep the tank around 75-80
use aquasoil for planted tank. cap with sand or smaller aquasoil so ur fishies can sift. deeper substrate is better so like 5 inches or ur kuhlis will uproot all ur plants
you can keep like 6-10 if you want a community tank. way more if its a species only tank. your fishies will be prolly hiding more if you stock aggressive fish in the tank
i would not recommend gouramis unless its a honey gourami. tetras might get nippy, so why not rasboras? chilli rasboras are small and won't scare ur kuhlis as much
Thank you! I’ll look into rasboras.
