content in a modern context means consumable information/media and im not a fan of consumerism. joy is valuable in and of itself so seeing the joy of a new linux user as an obstacle to your consumable information/media is....well, joyless
i disagree, consumerism is consumption for the sake of consumption whether monetary or otherwise. i think theres a different experience between consuming creative work rather than engaging with it. also "i just switched to linux im so happy" isnt creative work, its a declaration of joy, an expression. its not content but i still think someone else's joy is worthwhile
"content in a modern context means consumable information/media"
The "I just switch to Linux I'm so happy" is literally content. It meets perfect with consumable information. The I formation being, OP likes Linux, you now know that, so you have consumed that information.
It also meets the media part because you consumed the content on a social media platform (one form of media) by way of text that portrays some story, event, etc (another form of media)
thats a solid argument! i'll concede. my point with saying "content is a dirty word" was that the idea of "content" as a consumable is consumerist and therefore not a term i like using. also when i see someone say stuff like "i want better content" i see that as a consumerist sentiment which is sad because consumerism is a joyless practice and ideology in my opinion.
I call BS on your stance. If you were not a fan of consumerism, you would limit your consumption to that which is essential for survival. However, you are not limiting your consumption. I can tell by the fact you being on reddit.
Also, you getting joy, from another person's post, regardless what the post is about, is you consuming content, which if you were not a fan of, you would not do.
I also call BS on your stance because you grossly missrepresnt what consumerism is and you grossly correlated content and consumerism.
LOL what? i just dont think that way man. why would "consumerismis a depressing ideology" = "i must never enjoy anything ever again". you can enjoy and appreciate stuff while removed from a consumerist mentality. consumerism is "more more more" and "better better better" while, idk what to call what i do but its like "hmm what are ppl up to today?". i dont look at these posts like theyre doing something for me just as a window into the state of something like the linux community, or the subnautica community (which i like participating in). i dont know where all this absolutism is coming from
Using social media, is full in on consumerism. As you scroll you are always getting more, more, more content. That is why I called BS on your stance, you are using social media, scrolling looking for more, more, more
Even if you want to think it is not, more more more, it literally is. You get more content with the swipe of your thumb. You are trying to say something is bad, but do the same exact thing though but it's not bad for you because you perceive it for yourself as 'just a window" and not more content. You are changing the definition to make yourself feel right, better. But that's not how definitions should work.
i actively reduce my social media activity on sites like instagram and even youtube because their algorithms feel predatory. they generate an addiction which i recognized and therefore i reduce how much time i spend on social media. ive been using reddit to connect with people that use linux because im excited to be in this community now and i also need to learn by asking questions or reading threads that solve problems similar to mine. i will admit as i use reddit more the algorithm gets better and it starts to feel predatory again. i will likely be reducing my activity on here as well, maybe i will do what i did with ig and yt where i only use the browser versions on my laptop rather than my phone and usually for a purpose rather than for idle scrolling.
Well I always love the positive boost these posts give me.
I think the developers would be happy to have a single convert coming to linux.
Thank you for raining on someone elses parade.
Check out kubuntu or any other kde based distro, Linux mint or any other cinnamon based distro, or zorinos - if you want a ux/ui that's more like windows from before Microsoft ruined it. I mentioned those because kubuntu, mint, and zorin are based on Ubuntu so you'll have less of a learning curve. - but if you like Ubuntu sticking with it is fine.
I really envy you. Today Linux is much friendlier than it was ten years ago. I remember receiving my CD with Ubuntu, installing it and breaking the system because my user was not in the www-data group haha!
Those things can happen today but there are many resources and people willing to help.
Welcome!
But now it will be hard for me to ever go back to windows as I am have fun with Linux given how easily I can install software with apt instead of going to websites and downloading .exe.
I must say, I started tinkering with Linux in 1994. Before there was an Ubuntu. I cant remember what it was called but it was a command line distro.
In 2007, I started using Ubuntu and Windows. I found myself in Ubuntu about 85% of the time vs Windows at 15%. I was ready to switch then but I needed Photoshop and Lightroom to edit photos for my photography business.
Then in 2018, I tried Windows 10 on an 8 year old PC. Not gonna happen. It was so slow. And at the time i didn't have the money for a new PC. So, I went with Linux Mint Cinnamon and it felt just like Windows 7. It was so smooth of a transition. It was excellent.
Then about 18 months later in February 2020, I installed Arch Linux and that's where I've been ever since using a Tiling Window Manager. I'm loving it!
Welcome. Ubuntu is a good choice because most online tutorials you'll see target Ubuntu users.
You mentioned that the UI of Windows 11 is trying to copy Mac OS' UI. That's not a point I agree with*, but as far as UI / desktop environments go, I really dislike Ubuntu's GNOME desktop environment. For that reason, I'm using Lubuntu, which is more or less Ubuntu but with a lite desktop environment.
* = My system dual boots between Windows 11 and Lubuntu. I only keep Windows 11 because my laptop has an Nvidia GPU chip, and Nvidia's drivers for Linux sometimes get me half the performance they do when playing games in Windows.

Your post is considered "fluff" - things like a Tux plushie or old Linux CDs are an example and, while they may be popular vote wise, they are not considered on topic
Your post is otherwise deemed not appropriate for the subreddit
Why would I throw my current pc just because MS decide to have TPM and not nativly support hardware I already have. Most people dont have extra cash to burn to update hardware.
The irony of accusing his post of being fake when your illiteracy and Microsoft shilling makes yours look like a bot post. How did you graduate without being able to write a proper sentence?
we welcome all windows refugees!!
lol, thank you.
Welcome
Thank you
Welcome to the right side of history!
Welcome aboard shipmate.
Breathe in the open air.
r/Linux is not an airport. You don't have to announce your departure and arrival.
This is basically what this sub is going to be from now on I think.
yea.....tons of people are switching to linux because of virus 11 and this is the linux subreddit. what did you think would happen?
Not sure. Didn't think we'd have to read through everyone's life story just because they installed another OS on their computer though.
You must be fun at parties. How dare people celebrate finding a way out from under an oppressive hand, especially these days.
"Under an oppressive hand"
Yeah, this OS install makes apartheid look like nothing 🤣
i guess. welcome to a brave new world i suppose
It's a glorious time, I made the switch in 2009, and I wanted to tell everyone so I absolutely understand the feeling.
So ignore the post if it annoys you but be welcoming of new peeps.
(at most, I think mods can make a new flare for these kinds of posts so people can filter them out if they want to)
But I see you have freebsd icon that is annoucing something lol 😆
Got them OP screw the gatekeepers. Welcome to Linux brother! Freedom!
I like you already 👍
dude you are the kinda person that makes people think limux community is hostile (no hate js). lets celebrate a newcomer (im also newcomer)
Why are you considering wanting more interesting content than "Hi I joined Linux" hostile?
content is a dirty word
Wtf does this even mean....
content in a modern context means consumable information/media and im not a fan of consumerism. joy is valuable in and of itself so seeing the joy of a new linux user as an obstacle to your consumable information/media is....well, joyless
consumerism is used in a capitalistic sense, consuming creative work is not consumerism
i disagree, consumerism is consumption for the sake of consumption whether monetary or otherwise. i think theres a different experience between consuming creative work rather than engaging with it. also "i just switched to linux im so happy" isnt creative work, its a declaration of joy, an expression. its not content but i still think someone else's joy is worthwhile
By the definition you provided of content
"content in a modern context means consumable information/media"

I think it’s positive that people share here both the positive and negative stories. It helps shape the community.
Positives help other people make the jump.
Negatives help with feedback to steer where development goes and what needs to be improved.
What I don’t see as positive is people that just announce it and don’t give any feedback, but that’s not the case here.
Finally, Reddit is scrapable by search engines, so if you write a story here, chances are that it will appear on Google with the right search.
Stop being a misery guts.. this is not against the rules.

There is a way around that if you ever need it.
