Hi guys,

I have been playing violin for 11 years and am now a freshman in college studying data science and music. Unfortunately, my school doesn't have a great music program so I am afraid that I may fall behind my peers who are going to actual conservatories/schools with good music programs. I personally wanted to go to a music school however, my family is extremely against even the thought of pursuing music as a career. I honestly don't know what my future is going to look like and I just cannot imagine myself doing anything other than music. My dream is to be able to eventually apply for orchestral jobs/perform/gig/maybe teach. For the past 2 years, I have only had time to practice for 2-3 hours a day but I always feel like I am not practicing enough. I don't know how I am going to make this work but this is something I have really really wanted for many years and I can't stop thinking about it. I fear that if I am not at the level of my peers I may not be able to get an orchestral job.

Any advice would be truly appreciated.

  • The two most important things are having a good teacher, and having a good group (orchestra) to play with.

  • Same way you get to Carnegie Hall; PRACTICE.

  • Practicing absolutely is a big factor, but connections are also huge. If you get a gig and the person who hired you/other musicians present can vouch for your timeliness, preparedness, and general professionalism, you're more likely to get more gigs and become more connected (plus it's all good experience).
