She's dehydrated and hungry. They won't get up off the eggs to eat or drink when they're broody, we had to put food and water right in front of our hens or they just wouldn't do it.
Urgh. The other mother taking time out to scold but not doing anything to help, like give a drink or a bite to eat? I hate people chickens like this š
Iām not a chicken expert so real question. The scolding chicken has no comb. Itās my understanding that usually rooster will have a larger comb. So is the scolding bird an old laying hen scolding a young laying hen?
Theyāre both females. Not sure about age. Whatās actually happening is that, when a brooding hen sees a loose egg, she instinctively uses her beak to tuck it under her body, which the dark one tried to do. She just manipulated it poorly, straight under the reddish chicken.
Then she got mad at the other hen for ātakingā the egg she was going to sit on, hence the pecks.
Iām aware of the term āhen peckedā and I also understand chicken behavior is the genesis of āpecking orderā. I hadnāt considered the chicken was simply trying to care for the egg herself and just fumbled the baby.
For anyone wondering, Iām pretty confident that the two hens are different breeds of chicken. Similar to how a wolf is to a dog, the darker one is to the fluffier egg laying hen.
The pecks at the end really make it
And the face of the mother, she looks embarrassed š³
She looks defeated with life to me. She doesn't give af any more.
Me too, chicken. Me too.

peoplechickens like this šher EBT card got shut off
"You stoopid! Stoopid!"
"It does under, you dummy!"
Hence the English expression, āhenpecked.ā
Iām screaming because that hen was like āGet your shit together Martha!ā And poor Martha was likeā¦I just wanted to nap comfortably. š«£

Dang. Now that I go back and look, I think youāre right!
Great insight

Thank you for the explanation. As anticipated, it is chickens being dumb as fuck.
At least itās cute!!!
The darker one may not have a crown because of pecking order. Chickens can be jerks.
But she's the one pecking
Love that this is the opposite of what you would think when you first see the video but also so perfectly on brand for a chicken!
Just makes me go back to op's description and say "no, you cannot." Lol
Yeah chicken too dumb to scold another. This seems way more realistic. Source: my chickens are so dumb
Comb size has to do with breed and genetics, not age.
Well thatās not entirely true. Young hens have small combs. They do grow in the first year or two
Yes, I was simplifying, you're right of course. I just wanted to point out that on adults the short comb doesn't imply an older bird.
Edit: grammar
The darker chicken looks like the younger one to me, because of the small comb and the slimmer figure.
literally my mother-in-law š
Well stop letting her grand babies run around barefoot with no coat
"You birdbrain!"
I just wish that hen would respect another henās right to an abortion! Sheesh! š
Eggbortion?
Susan, you idiot, the egg goes under you, under!
Language 0 understanding 100
That's probably the mother in law
For some reason, I feel bad for that sitting chicken. So much depression in body language.
Awe how cute and precious!
Buk buk bakia!
Bird brain
maybe she's a first time mom

Good chicken
She knew she was wrong
Peck. Peck. Motherclucker
Wish humans could do this sometimes. The scolding, not the egg laying.
