Hi! I'm Max and I really want to get into Life is Strange; however, I'm a bit confused by the amount of episodes, games, dlcs on Steam and PS Store. From where do I start, and do I play the remastered version or?
The reason I wanted to play this game is the song "Obstacles" by Syd Matters which I really loved, and I also love story games, as well as choice games. I've played Detroit Become Human recently, planning to play Dispatch, Wolf Among Us, and I played Road 96 as well. So in general, I want to know if you have any advice how to play the games, by which order to buy them, maybe even some in-game tips :)
Thanks in advance.
Play release order:
Life is Strange
Before the Storm (plus DLC after main story)
Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit (free mini prequel to 2)
Life is Strange 2
True Colors (plus DLC after main story)
Hi, thank you so much!
If you play for the first time, play them in released orders. Play the first game (life is strange) and then Before the Storm and its DLC. Double Exposure is the only other game directly related to those two. Life is Strange 2 and True Colors can be played in any order since they are only related through secondary characters in the first game.
Alright, thanks, I am completely new to the franchise, so I'll play in the release order as you said
Release order is best for a first time player. Don't look for any play tips. Avoid all spoilers. You're going to make mistakes but you only get to experience this game for the first time once. Make mistakes, live it, enjoy it. You can always go back for that perfect run through afterwards.
Alright, I'll try to play the first time by myself as much as possible, I usually replay these kinds of games, like I did with Detroit Become Human, so I am definitely getting a second playthrough.
I’m new to the series. I finished Life Is Strange less than a week ago and Before the Storm (including the bonus episode) last night.
I think that order works. Before the Storm is a prequel and IMO makes more sense having played the original game. There are people with the opposite opinion though, so I think it’s fair to say either order works.
Avoid spoilers no matter what. These games work because they surprise you, make you care about the characters, and gut punch you with hard choices. In particular if you do play Before the Storm first, stop before the post credits scene of episode 3. You won’t miss anything vital but there is a spoiler for the key mystery that kicks off Life Is Strange.
Also, have a box of tissues handy.
Alright, thank you for the explanation, and yeah, I heard this game is really sad so I'm ready to cry already 😭
I teared up a little bit at the final scene of the first Walking Dead Telltale game years and years ago. That's the closest any game has ever come to making me cry before. Life Is Strange has made me cry several times since finishing it. It's quite something.
I agree. I was kicked out and banned from a Life is Strange facebook group for telling someone to not listen to the others in playing BTS first; I suggested playing LIS1 first.
The reason is like you said, that post credits scene in BTS ruins a major twist in LIS1.
Because your name is Max and you want to play the game because of the song, Obstacle, just start with LIS1 original. Don't play Before the Storm first because it ruins LIS1 - the developers assumed you played LIS1 first.
From there, you can play BTS, LIS2, or DE. You want to play Before the Storm before you play True Colors to understand one character better.
Okay thanks! What does my name have to do with anything tho?
It was a joke, and you may want to play LIS1 because there is a character with the same name as you.
Oh, I didn't know that, will defimetely check it out
I agree with the comments above but there is also a game about a young kid which is in the franchise aswell. This is called (The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit) I played this one after the first 2 :) it helped with Lis 2 imo :) enjoy!
Thank you so much, I'll definitely check it out too! :)
LiS1 -> Before the Storm -> Farewell (BTS DLC) -> Captain Spirit -> LiS2 -> True Colors -> Wavelengths (TC DLC) -> Double Exposure.
Either release order or chronological order is fine.
Release order:
Chronological order: (Just Swap LIS1 and LIS Before the Storm)

The difference between release order and chronological order is just the first two entries LIS and LIS before the storm.
If you follow the chronological order, you'll know what's going on right away when playing LIS, and if you follow the release order, there are more ah-ha moments for you.
Edit:
For the first two entries LIS and LIS before storm, there are remastered versions of them. These two remastered games are pretty buggy when they first released (and still), so the review is pretty bad, and a lot of people prefer the orginal versions.
Because of the release of the remastered versions, the orginal version stops getting featured in the sales events, as a way of promotion for remastereds. So now it could be pricier to get the orginal versions than the remastereds.
Play Life is Strange and then play Life is Strange 2. Don't play any of the others.
Doesn’t matter much. The main thing to remember is to ignore the existence of double exposure in its entirety. It’s just a soulless cash-grab sadly.
