Hey folks!

With the recent announcement of a Life is Strange TV series getting greenlit at Amazon, we thought it would be good to have a mega thread for it.

This post will serve as a catch-all for discussion about it. Any random thoughts, opinions, and first impressions you have are welcome. You are of course still free to make your own post if you want to discuss a more specific topic though :)

  • I know it's early to wonder this but I really wondering if:

    • The show is exclusively focused on LiS1, therefore, future seasons are either adapting the game longer than the original or original content focused on those characters
    • Alternatively, if the show will be as the franchise is, as an anthology show. Future seasons adapt the other games with better ties to one another since there's a set canon

Even though I'm pretty down on the show I'd be more curious to see option B, since I think TC could actually be made better than the game.

I hope they reimagine games with only the very very crucial plot elements happening

LIS 1 spoilers Like keeping Chloe and Nathan gun accident, Kate’s attempt, finding Rachel, Chloe dying (I can see them also altering this), the dark room, the nightmare sequences but maybe reimagined to fit a show instead of a game

While altering the minor plot elements like what’s my name or (minor spoilers) Standing up for Kate or taking a picture

A one to one show wouldn’t work beyond fan service since the games been out for 10 years now

Nawww, I'm not Taking the True Colours slander. I love all the games but TC is absolutely the best of them all

for me it goes in this order:

    1. Life is Strange

    2. True Colors

    3. Life is Strange 2

    4. Wavelengths

    5. Double Exposure - Bay ending dependent

    6. Before The Storm - Switched out for DE based on chosen ending to LIS1

Idc what anyone says, True Colors was the best completely separate LIS game.

I imagine there is going to be some story rewrites for certain things, such as a larger focus on Kate's arc, flashbacks to the darkroom scenes and probably a furtherance of context for Rachel's history at Blackwell Academy.

    Basically:

    1. Large focus on side characters

    2. More detailed backstory for Kate and more of a build up to her rooftop issue

    3. Flashbacks for both Kate and Rachel's night in the darkroom, along with their demise. I imagine Rachel's won't be shown until her death/the main antagonists are revealed though

    4. Some filler removed here and there or even replaced with new filler.

Then I would think they're gonna effectively do 8 episodes per season, and each season is a different game. More than likely Season 1 - LIS1 then Season 2 - LIS 2 and Season 3 - True Colors.

I don't think they would go further than True Colors though because Double Exposure is already a mess on its own for multiple reasons and even DeckNine doesn't want to do anything with it anymore and is only working on DE2 due to their contract with SquareEnix.

  • Honestly, however it turns out I'm going to watch it and probably enjoy it, even if it doesn't live up to the impossible expectations of all of us. But if it serves as a gateway to get more people interested in the IP then I'll be happy. This game (and series) holds a very special place in my heart, and I am looking forward to sharing it with more people.

I know multiple people IRL who I know would love the story, but just would never play a game.

Same, my sister was like that but I figured a solution where I played (and showed her the Easter eggs that most would miss on their playthrough) but she made all the decisions

  • I can't wait for this to come out!!

when is the casting news coming out?

  • After finding out the writers/creators of the game were not even invited to have any input, I have absolutely no interest.

At least for it's faults(looking at you season 2) at least Neil Druckman was involved with The Last Of Us series.

I wouldn’t discount it just yet, the show just got greenlit. From greenlight to release it took about 4 years to get Fallout made. Granted they were navigating through the pandemic and it’s a bigger show, but LiS still has a good amount of time to get their ducks in a row with story consultants. If they get this wrong the franchise is dead, Square Enix is in no position to take liberties.

Yes but his The Last of Us 2 script was poorly written for the game as well. So I don’t think Season 2 of the show would’ve been that good either.

TLoU 2 is a game that people either love or hate, but you have to admit that the script was pretty good.

No, the story was poorly told, random flash backs, a storyline featuring Abby I did not care for while trying to tell you Ellie bad… Abby good for no reason. Then you throw random PTSD… and a final boss that amounts to nothing. TLOU2 belongs in dumpster. TLOU 1 was a master piece.

    /TLOU2 spoilers

Total disagree. I think the game doesn't work if you dislike Abby, which I can see why people do. But saying Ellie is bad "For no reason" or she has "Random PTSD" is certainly a choice.

The entire game is about Ellie's descent into destruction due to her inability to properly process the death of Joel. It's very reminiscent of Death Note or Breaking Bad, where you are supposed to slowly stop rooting for the protagonist over the course of the story while maintaining empathy for their plight. Even if you view Ellie killing Abby as a morally just thing to do, she kills dozens of only tangentially related people along the way, justifying it as necessary collateral to find and kill Abby.

I wouldn't say that the message is that Ellie is bad and Abby is good. Rather, the game starts from a place where everyone would agree that Ellie is the hero/protagonist and Abby is the enemy, and throughout the narrative we are shown things to counter those perceptions. I don't think I've seen people who love Abby and hate Ellie, but I'm sure they exist. More often, as someone who follows a lot of people in the TLOU2 game fandom, I see them hold space for both Ellie and Abby as complex characters who are extremely similar in both their capacity for goodness AND evil.

Your comment about Random PTSD doesn't make sense at all, as there are numerous events throughout the game that could realistically lead to PTSD, and we are shown how deeply they affect Ellie after the fact. Obviously, Joel's death affects her most deeply, but also after killing Nora when Ellie comes back shaking, in tears, and mentally withdrawn as Dina cleans her wounds. Another moment is killing Mel and the baby, where Ellie is in complete denial and pukes in disgust over her actions. With all of these moments plus more, Ellie having panic attacks related to PTSD makes complete sense.

Well in that case, Abby also kills many of her fellow Wolf Soldiers. Also I haven’t played the game since 2020 so many details I don’t recall. But I still find it a terrible story with good gameplay. Story I don’t understand why they killed Joel in the first hour or so in the game and not even giving him a good death.

Yup the point I am making is that the game absolutely shows that Abby kills people and does incredibly morally unjustifiable things as well, very similar to Ellie - the takeaway by the end should be that they're both more similar than they are different. I recommend revisiting the game because I think you'd find that a lot of things you dislike about the game you misremember the details of. Joel's death is supposed to happen early in the game and be undignified and shocking as it's the catalyst for the entire revenge plot of the story and our introduction to Abby as the antagonist. TLOU1 was about Joel's character arc but TLOU2 is about Ellie's

The only thing is Joel’s death was poorly executed, that’s one of major reasons why I hate TLOU2 not that he died but how early and how they did it. I would revisit it but I don’t want to force myself through Abby’s story again. Despite her having the best gameplay sections I don’t want to play as her again.

someone wasnt paying attention while playing it

  • Watch as this subreddit devours itself

Jumps into dot on wall 😮

  • I think it would be cool if every season was one of the games. so the 1st, before the storm, 2nd, and true colors.

Love how u also know DE can’t sell on its story alone

  • Odds of this living up to the game are 1 in a million, so I'll refrain from getting hopeful and just see how it ends up without expectations.

Same here, I learned the hard way with DE not to have expectations anymore

  • im gonna watch it, but god i have a bad feeling about this like isn't the whole point of lis to make choices? as an observer those choices are taken away so while it may still be entertaining it won't be life is strange.

  • I just hope they don’t woke it up and make the main characters gay

i’ve got some bad news for you then

Imagine if they make Chloe lesbian

To be fair Chloe isn’t lesbian she is bisexual as she had a bad boy phase I believe she mentions it at one point.

  • Wow, just finished the game again and a few days later I learn about the adaptation being greenlit? Talk about great timing!

It's fascinating to me how the choices in this game expose us, the players. They show who we are, what we believe is important and how we go about life. Ten years ago when I first finished this game at 15, I chose the bay after some deliberation. The math just didn't add up for the other ending. Sacrificing an entire town for the sake of a single person, even if she's your friend? Insanity! Perhaps unsurprisingly, just a year prior I switched schools without ever saying goodbye to my old classmates. Sure, I didn't talk much to some of them but I still feel I should've done it, just out of courtesy. Fast forward to today, I always choose the bae ending in a heartbeat. Now I realize I used to underestimate the importance of the people around me. Who else but your friends and loved ones would be there for you when you're down, lonely or in trouble? Having moved countries twice and lost almost everyone in the process during those 10 years, now I see how much it truly matters to have someone by your side.

I see games as an art form. It's hard not to when you grew up with games like Life is Strange. And as with any other art form, games and shows can have a real, tangible impact on players and viewers. The bay ending makes the point that fate is a thing. That your life is predetermined and you're merely stuck watching as it passes by. The bae ending, on the other hand, shows that life is worth fighting for. It's hard, you will make mistakes and regret your decisions in the process but at least you have agency. You have the power to change your life and the lives of those around you for the better instead of accepting things as they are. I'm sure some people will say that math still does not add up but my reply is it doesn't have to. If a show can teach someone a lesson and change someone's real life for the better, destroying a fictional town is a small price to pay. This game was a big reason for me to reconsider my priorities in life. I wouldn’t be where I am today, surrounded by the people I care about if not for this game and I couldn't be more grateful for it. I hope the adaptation makes the same choice and chooses to impact its viewers the same way as the original game did me.

Why would destroying a fictional town be a small price to pay? There are countless people in that town being sacrificed, while Chloe is only one person who was destined to die on the day that Max saved her. I get that Max and Chloe have a great relationship in the game and I definitely felt Max's pain because she saved Chloe countless times but the reason the tornado came to Arcadia bay was because Max kept on interfering with Chloe's fate. Hence, why in my opinion, it's best to sacrifice Chloe.

This. Also the bay ending just...hits different. Love me a tragic ending full of angst.

  • I wonder if the way they handle choices is choosing the most popular ones (the ones we can see inside the game statistics)

I'm gonna look what those are and see if it would turn out good.

Okay, so she kisses Warren... I don't like this idea anymore lol.

Also she kills a bunch of birds and the plant. I think everyone else lives though (except Chloe 😭)

  • i feel like it’s lowkey doomed to make a story where the player’s decisions and branching options are baked in. the games are ludonarratives that would just get flattened if u adapt them as a straight line. i think comics work as a medium that is well versed for multiple timelines but i dont know how adaptable the original game is without losing its core

  • Posted this in a separate post but thought it would belong here too:

OK SO. Not sure if this has been said in this sub before but I was really worried for the show until I found out that Charlie Covell would be adapting it. Not only is Charlie Covell a very talented and nuanced LGBTQ+ writer, they also have experience in adapting not video games, but COMICS. They did a fantastic adaptation of The end of the f**king world which was marvellously funny and just all around great. Life is strange was also adapted to a comic which as far as I'm aware is recognised as canon by the fandom (or at least some diehard bae over bay fans)

could this show be an adaptation of the life is strange comic as opposed to the video game? I think that would generally work better too as Covell wouldn't have to worry about writing an ambiguous (or worse a completely different) ending. I have SOME faith.

  • Why does capitalism have to exploit a franchise till there's nothing of it left? Why can't we appreciate the game as it is. Instead we find ourselves with unrealistic sequels, attempts to create a marvel like universe, a tv show adaptation. It's all so useless...

    capitalism

You pretty much answered your own question there. If you don't know what it's about, then it's about money.

You know capitalism is the main reason you experienced this game in the first place right?

Not really, the game was made in Paris, France which is more socialist leaning

Is there anything "socialist" in the game? No

Did they not move to Canada as a second office? Yes they did

Anyways, without capitalist values we wouldn't have the tech that brought this game.

There’s also nothing capitalist in the game, except for maybe showing how losing the main-dough maker of a household ruins the house with the Price family but even that’s a reach

I still don’t understand “capitalist values”, the same values that brought Teflon poison pans?

No the ones that developed computers and graphic cards and pushed technical powers and made it available for consumer use.

If something bad happens then don't blame the whole thing.

I'm not advocating for capitalism or against communism, but communism brought shit to a lot of countries (mine included) as did capitalism.

It's the one sided view that annoys me.

I’m not for communism, pretty shit and unrealistic ideology, but capitalism just makes the worst of the worst become powerful, and the kindest lose power

    Yeah I understand

Everything in life has upsides and downsides.

    Literally everything

Fair enough, honestly this debate been going on for long enough imo, wish u the best

  • I don’t get the negativity. There are some really talented people working on this TV series, and if it turns out great, it could give us so much more official Life is Strange content. We should all hope for its success. The Life is Strange game will still be there. The series will be its own thing, probably more of an adaptation. Honestly, I think they’ll avoid the whole Sacrifice Arcadia Bay or Chloe choice, and that’s probably for the best.

How will they avoid that ending?

I don’t really have a good answer. Maybe they’ll go with Max saving both Chloe and Arcadia Bay, or maybe they’ll use the third ending Dontnod never used, the hospital ending. There are definitely ways to handle it, and they’ll without doubt do their own thing. The ending of Life is Strange has split the fandom into two very different groups, so it would be smart to avoid that in the TV series too.

    https://life-is-strange.fandom.com/wiki/Hospital_Ending

Yes thank you for saying this.

  • I just realised that Charlie Covell is Tara's older sister, Sophie, from The Inbetweeners.

  • Upon hearing the news, I watched both seasons of EOTFW back to back.

I don’t know if this is going to be any good or not, but I feel optimistic, because if there’s anyone who can pull this off, it’s Charlie Covell.

They’re familiar with adapting different mediums, they excel at complex characters. Their style naturally gravitates to a LiS-esque atmosphere.

All in all. I think we’re in VERY good hands.

The only thing I worry about is Square Enix’s influence.

  • im trying to stay optimistic about it,, i REALLY hope they include the farewell dlc and plot points from before the storm!! i wonder how it will work.. would it be interactive?

  • I hope the TV show is good. I'll be watching when it drops. It also makes me hopeful that the franchise will continue and maybe even grow if the show is successful.

  • I look forward to watching the TV series. Life is Strange is one of my favorite games of all time (2nd place). I played it for the first time when I was a teenager, and then last year, for the second time as a young adult, and I still loved it. I want the show to have the Bay ending.

  • Yall should check this new actress out i found her when i was browsing through IMDb for something new to watch and found her… her acting literally gives max no??? Ahhh we need to make her more known!!!!

heres her IMDb link if Yall wanna check her out: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm17064551/

Noooooo way, to me doesnt look, sound or speak like Max at all this would be another Ellie from the last of us conundrum

    bella crushed it as ellie

To me she has that soft spoke voice that Max has Lol

  • I wonder if the show will include the Farewell DLC then do the first game but we'll see.

I feel like it’d work better as a flashback sequence somewhere around the middle. Maybe around when we get photojump/Alternative sequence?

  • why i feel this will be done by people who have no ideea what life is strange is abbout and will fail ?

    Experience probably :(

  • Omg I only just finished the first game today and I already can’t wait!

  • I think it’s going to be great, and I’m really looking forward to it. Casting will be fun to follow once it starts.

  • WHEN WILL AUDITIONS BE HELD

No I need to know where I can audition I'm being so fr

Probably 2-3 months after the announcement

  • I've posted this in other threads, so I might just post it here as well.

My dream — though I know it will never happen — would be for the show to have Max receive messages or visions from a future version of herself who is out to change the events of the past.

Similar to the sadly abandoned fic, Letters From Tomorrow.

Thus technically having the plot take place after the game.

In that way, the story can be both similar and new for old fans without spoiling things for newcomers unfamiliar with the games.

It would also allow the writers to show us both endings and then have Max take a third option where she can save both Chloe and Arcadia Bay.

On a different note. I think Jonathan Bailey would be a good choice as Jefferson.

I agree except for the Jonathan Bailey part

  • Amazon adaptations are either amazing or terrible there’s no in between

  • I wonder what tone the show will have or what audience. Will it stay true to its self and let the chips fall where they do, or go for a more mature tone and cut back on some of the "teen campiness". Personally, this was always my fear when it was rumored to go to the CW. LIS is a drama, with tragedy, real life dark themes and stories and issues that relate to everyone.

  • I just feel like the vibe can’t be recreated. It was the time it came out that made it feel the way it did. Hard to describe but a lot of stuff is being recreated when I think there should be something new. No hate though, i genuinely hope they can do this

  • I don't think I'm this series target audience (30+ year old straight white male). I only got into the series when they announced TC and decided to give it a go...

I do love the series. There's a lot special about each game that comes out. Just from the past week there's been a HUGE influx of negativity. I just want to point out that while you may not like choices decisions artistic liberties etc. But to someone somewhere they are getting the game/movie/show etc they wanted. This game has a wide reach with a surprisingly large fanbase. While it is made for us all, it is not only made for you.

  • I'm just posted in here and paste the text, lmao

back in 2015, they announced that Life is Strange are going to make tv show, it’s been almost 10 years since i heard about this news, until now last year i finally played the game. It’s a very good game, especially for a story-driven from 2015, if they do adapt it, i don’t mind, but i pretty sure they would pick the “sacrifice chloe” ending as canon, I agree about this, why?. the whole point of a choice-based game IS to make YOU THINK about consequences. It’s NOT ABOUT YOUR satisfying or obsession with a character sure if you save chloe, you’re could being selfish and never learning the lesson the story is trying to teach you. but if you choose to sacrifice chloe, you’re accepting that this is her destiny. That’s the true meaning of the butterfly effect: the moment you first saved chloe, you changed everything, I know some people will upset with this, and that’s fine, but this is how I see it I really like that they should cast unknown actor, for this role, but except Kristine Froseth as our rachel, when I saw her performance at tv show called looking for alaska, j immediately thought that she would perfectly act as our rachel my biggest worry is that they’ll handle it poorly, like tlou s2, if they want this to succeed, they need to work with Dontnod or at least coordinate with them as the original creators, to make the story deep and alive, and ofc they should keep the original soundtrack, jonathan Morali music is a huge part of the game’s soul

I agree with you. Sacrificing Chloe is the right choice. I like her character, and that ending made me cry like a baby.

and also I like to see if they cast just like the hunger games who perfectly capture them

  • I really hope they go with the Bay ending, or have a sort of choice and film both like that one time Netflix tried something similar.

I know people love the Bae ending and respect that, but Bay just thematically makes so much more sense given the overall story and context

  • change the villain. else it will be same as game and no point in seeing it. make victoria or chloe as villain. like explore darker side of chloe when max left her. chloe as villain will brainF**k the entire fandom

    [removed]

can't victoria fit into the villain? she controls nathan all the time and are friends. it can make sense that victoria can be villain.

    No, it doesn't make sense.

Victoria is an insecure b!tch that's putting on an "Ice Queen" facade to fit in with the people around her and isn't like Nathan or Jefferson at all (She is genuinely remorseful for being a part of Kate's suicide, while Nathan and Jefferson aren't, and they are even happy if she's successful) and deep down can be a better person if pushed into the right direction as seen with her relationship with Max in the game if Max is nice to her throughout it no matter what as well as in LiS2 with her letter to David for him saving her from the storm

    Edit:

    words + grammar

I find Jefferson dark enough and like seeing humanity in victoria. when it comes to changing the game like that to the point of chloe being a villian that would be a fanfiction not a tv show with the plot and timeline of the first game.
