Okay, so I was never a fan of AR9s as a concept, but my wife is what ultimately made me test some out. She doesn’t mind handguns, but is less than enthused when it comes to longer guns. So, I began my hunt of finding a PCC that we both could love.

I tried some CMMG, MP5s, Scorpions, and a few random ARP configurations. While some of those were really nice, I’m a build craft guy and I became determined to take what I liked about those guns and build out my own. Before I could, though, I would need to settle on a platform to base it around.

Enter: Wraithworks’ Warscorp AR-9 for $500 on BattleHawk Armory

I chose this gun because I wanted something side charging as I’m not really a fan of standard AR charging handle configurations. I managed to wander upon this little beaut and learned that they’re relatively unknown, which (to me) is better than being know for being shit. The few discussions I did find on it (as well as a video by PSR I’ll post below) did actually paint it in a fairly good light. So, I bought it and went to the range with 500 rounds to see if I had actually made a good choice and man;I have been in love ever since.

Things I love:

• trigger: there’s almost no squish and trigger reset is snappy and short (around <1/4” travel max); pretty solid compared to other mil spec triggers

• fold forward charging handle: going from racking to shooting feels more natural and the folding handle doesn’t interfere with operation

• ambi controls: ambi mag release (as well as CZ style paddle release), ambi selector, and comes with extra selector switches for customizability

• magazine: running scorpion mags is awesome as they have easily become some of my favorite mags

• the price: it’s cheaper than 32GB of RAM now. Can’t get much better than that.

• last round open: can confirm it has worked flawlessly

The thing that makes me feel iffy:

• The proprietary stuff: the charging handle, BCG, bolt release, and paddle concern me as far as ease of fix goes. They go directly against why I chose the AR-9 platform. However, I figure I can circumvent this worry by obtaining backups of those parts

• hand guard: due to the charging handle being able to fold forward, I’d prefer to keep that function which means replacement had guards must be slim enough. This could be an issue—one I will test and post about as I hadn’t seen enough about anywhere.

• dustcover: there is none nor does it look like it would be simple to add one

Upgrades I plan to make:

• SI GRIDLOK 8.5” Hanguard (en route)

• B5 Systems 23 P-Grip

• Maxim Defense Roller-Delayed Buffer

• FRT (unsure what kind)
