So what’re everyone’s fave trades of recent memory? What trades landed on your boards/desks and really stuck?
And conversely, what did you expect to love but for whatever reason, didn’t bond with?
Couple trades this past year were super. I forget what I traded away (maybe a deep dive will find them)…. Got a GE-7 about a year ago, maybe more, and it’s been a staple. Same with a Wampler ego. Landed this in a trade this year and it’s super to play with. I now understand the compressor hype.
On a more bougie scale, I got an SSBS f*ck in trade almost 2 years ago and never wanna give it up. And even longer back, I traded an analogman fuzz and an SSBS mini towards an MIJ tele that is my absolute favorite, play-it-every-day, guitar.
Less successful, didn’t stick. Chase Bliss Gen Loss. Not sorry that I tried it— It’s brilliant at lofi and tape and glitches. I think ultimately that flavor of sound is, for me, better obtained in a computer plugin than on my board…. I just didn’t stomp it enough.
Also less successful— all the “end of chain dirty reverbs.” Cool, but — and maybe this is a rig problem, like bad cables or too many pedals— all of them generated a notable hiss at low (basement, don’t-piss-off-the-family) volumes. They are great at noisier volumes but I can’t crank it that often😭😭😭. This was Decay Cascade, Screen Violence, Tides, Meteore.
One piece that has definitely stuck with me is the spark go mini. Got it from a super cool soul here.
I pretty much use it daily, just bluetooth my phone into it, get Pandora streaming, and just jam along to whatever comes up next. Thing sounds better than some amps 10x its size.
I also really enjoy the Fender Pinwheel I got here some time back (maybe that was '24, but oh well). Dial in the touch response on it and it just sounds fabulous. I play fingerstyle and I've been working on dynamics a lot, so anything that can respond to touch is a great help in that.
Been through a TON of delay pedals, haven't really decided which one does it for me. Currently the Arp-87 is on deck, it seems to be working OK. Traded for a DL4 OG this year because it's just a classic, but it didn't really do it for me. Seems like delays have moved on since the aughties.
I wonder if there’s a taxonomy of traders out there, like
In it to win it. Overly aggro about valuations. Looking for vaguely lopsided trades and maybe even unkind to strangers
“Paper clip to maserati” traders… slowly working their way up from a Behringer pedal to eventually scoring a Klon, one trade at a time
(Probably me more often than I’d like): flavor
Of the month samplers— trading relatively newish and kinda trendy pedals as a “free trial.” Getting to try 3-5 pedals for the price of one… ish….
Pedalboard project refreshers— trading older and familiar pedals for more cutting-edge updated things, trading “boring” for jazzy and snazzy, trading Boss and EHX for builders you can’t find in stores. Sometimes as part of joining new bands or crafting new music projects
Dopamine hitters— love the lil red dots on the Reddit alert bell and chat ellipsis button. Love getting cool toys in the mail.
A close evolutionary cousin of #3, the “tried X, not vibing, gonna try a different flavor of X… or gonna try Y…”. (It’s me, I’m the problem). Seduced by a youtube video of a vastly superior musician. Can’t replicate it, trade it away, lather, rinse, repeat.
I think we're all a mix of motivations, sometimes depending on the day or the season. I bet we've all been "paperclip to maserati" at some point in this process.
There is a strong showing of "I have too much stuff, help me downsize" here too. Usually after a few months of doing it for the dopamine hit.
If only there were more unicorns interested in trading their Really Nice Thingy for my Pile of OK Thingies.
I can identify with 2 and 5. After solder jockeying for years, I can't really get behind 3, 4 and 6. A Tubescreamer is a Tubescreamer, and a Muff is a Muff. Fight me.
I got blocked by someone over this recently, because they insisted that I undervalue my pedal and overvalue theirs, and then got offended that I stated and backed up that the values were too far apart. First bad encounter I’ve had on here to date though, so that says something about the overall good water temperature on this sub.
If someone is massively overvaluing, I usually just politely bow out. I mean, who am I to say they won't get that value from that pedal? I'm not gonna be the one to give it, but maybe someone else will. Or not.
In either case, I've never successfully navigated a trade after throwing reverb sales data in someone's face, it's not worth the trouble.
If someone is massively overvaluing, I usually just politely bow out.
I agree! In this case I did exactly that. I wouldn't feel comfortable trading with someone anyway if they're getting aggressive about me not going for sending them well-above their pedal's value.
Sure enough, later on I made a trade with that pedal for something else I felt was close enough in value but a few bucks below that I liked and they got into an argument with someone else two days later about the valuation of a different pedal. So that at least makes me feel like in that moment I wasn't the crazy one.
I've had trades where the value was in my favor, and those where it wasn't too. I don't mind doing that if I think it's something that will get a permanent place on my board. It tends to work itself out on here if you're genuine and easy to deal with. I'm not a big fan of when someone asks you outright to take a bath because of some looney tunes math that magically favors them above you though.
what's ya'lls favorite album(s) RELEASED this year?
my tops are Deftones' "Private Music" and then JPEGMAFIA's "I LAY MY LIFE DOWN FOR YOU : DIRECTOR'S CUT". (Had to find a way to sneak it in there and it counts cause it was released with more tracks.)
i appreciate you using the same technicality that i did. lol. the overall sentiment i get here and with other friends is that 2025 wasn’t the best for new music.
I found this year kinda weak. Like, I add stuff to a playlist all year long so that I have a snapshot of each year, and Boner Jams ‘25 was very short and underwhelming. Conjurer’s Unself and The Murder Capital’s Blindness come to mind. Turnstile record was okay but flat compared to GLOW ON. Kinda liked Rocket’s R Is For Rocket. Mostly listened to older stuff though. Hope more people will reply so I can find some decent stuff!
I agree with you there. I know my taste have changed over the years, but there wasnt a lot released that i listened to that was great. I'll fall under the "mostly listened to older stuff" as well. I think the stress of the year just had me going to old things, comfort food.
I've loved every single Deafheaven album since their demo, but for some reason havent given the newest a complete listen. I need to give it the full listen, and check out Clipse as well.
It's right up there with Sunbather, IMO, and that was basically a revolutionary album for me. It got me back into guitar-driven music after years of not listening to it. Just a juggernaut of a band, Infinite Granite is their worst album and it's still pretty good.
New Clipse really caught me off guard, I thought it was gonna be a cash grab but Malice is in top form even after all these years.
Roads to Judah will forever be my favorite of theirs, and Sunbather was a big jump but i loved it as well. I really enjoy Infinite Granite. i hold George’s lyrics in a fairly high regard, so the album sits well with me.
Part of why I got into building pedals was to understand the difference between fuzz, distortion, overdrive, preamp, etc. Turns out it's ultimately just about framing expectations (or more cynically, marketing). Any alleged rules about circuit topology or the use of diodes can be demonstrated to be wrong.
When it comes to a preamp, you're just meant to understand that as the preamp part of a head stuck into a pedal. The circuit may or may not represent an actual preamp circuit from an actual amp.
Thats basically an overdrive pedal thats eq'd or based off an existing preamp. I.e. the benson preamp. This is can be used as a regular overdrive.
A preamp thats designed to run into a power amp. I.e. the tone king imperial preamp. These have strong line levels may even have actual tubes. And are often an amp in a pedal format. Designed to maybe replace or supplement your existing amp
My pedantic ass wants to say anything between the guitar and power amp is a "preamp" but my builder ass says it follows or interprets an existing preamp architecture from an existing and known amplifier. The best preamp pedals follow the latter but everyone needs a DOD 250 preamp pedal.
At practice this week, I worked with our band's rhythm guitarist/vocalist to help him chase a tone. We swapped through every preamp/OD pedal we had between us (which covered all the major circuits) and I turned knobs to find the edge of breakup on each.
The goddamn DOD 250 just had something special and perfect about it. Don't sleep on those $90 reissues everyone.
Gotta know why Blurst over Q-balls or Enigma or Q-Tron or BallsTron™️ or Q-Tip whatever? EHX seems to make infinity pedals, but I think the Enigma one looked cool.
Highly recommend the mods, fromel/wampler etc, at the very least if you clip one or two resistors out it takes the nasal-ness out of it. It definitely made it more usable and less of a novelty.

It's funny when you find people that are more interested in "winning" a trade than actually trading. There are people who have had the same pedals on here for months and seem to have no interest in actually trying new stuff. Case in point: https://www.reddit.com/r/letstradepedals/comments/1pzk0ky/wtt_plasma_pedal_fairfield_accountant_tc_subnup/

But… but…. what if… EXTRA KNOBS???
I love extra knobs. TS9DX or JD9 > TS9, and the best Muffs have a mid control in addition to the existing Sustain, Tone, Level.
A lot of variants with the same controls are almost indistinguishable though. For me it's kind of silly.

Huggggggeee fan of Freak Slug’s Loose Tooth and a Short Skirt
The Algorithm (Ultra Ed.) by Filter, I think it's actually the only piece of media that came out this year that I actually enjoyed.
i appreciate you using the same technicality that i did. lol. the overall sentiment i get here and with other friends is that 2025 wasn’t the best for new music.
added to the list to give a listen.
I didn't love a lot of 2025 releases, but I am really digging Jeff Tweedy's Twilight Override record.
shall add it to the list to try out.
This made me realize most albums I was listening to this year were from 2024 or 2023.
Hög's Blackhole was a real ripper that was released in 2025.
yep, same. for my tastes 2025 wasn’t a strong year, but 23 and 24 had so much tha i’m behind.
adding Hög to the list!

Turnstile felt like Glow On Pt. 2 and I agree, not as good.

Deftones, Deafheaven, Clipse, TAGABOW, Greet Death, Planning for Burial
I've loved every single Deafheaven album since their demo, but for some reason havent given the newest a complete listen. I need to give it the full listen, and check out Clipse as well.

Fuckin love me some deafheaven
Saw a trader asking for a “Hi Gain preamp” today…
What actually constitutes a preamp? Genuinely I do not know, and google isn’t as fun as asking the community

Theres 2 definitions of preamp we use

Buncha freaking heathens out here on Xmas trying to trade your super fuzzes for Enzos and stuff.
I've been refreshing all day just to make a list to give to Jesus of those who put tone above presents and food.
I'm just trying to get a Blurst, man, I need it
Gotta know why Blurst over Q-balls or Enigma or Q-Tron or BallsTron™️ or Q-Tip whatever? EHX seems to make infinity pedals, but I think the Enigma one looked cool.
I’m gonna email EHX Mike and pitch the idea for BallsTron
because the blurst is silly
If you run it into a metal zone it actually sounds just like Jimi at woodstock.
I've actually never had a Metal Zone, it's on my list of stuff to get
Highly recommend the mods, fromel/wampler etc, at the very least if you clip one or two resistors out it takes the nasal-ness out of it. It definitely made it more usable and less of a novelty.
It’s a day we’re not at work! The dishes were done, the presents put away, the leftovers stashed… time for trading
And other lies I tell myself....
Dudes were posting all morning too. Foosball and trading pedals on xmas is the DEBIL!
Honestly the older I get the more holidays are just another day, just with hopefully better food.
