My current instructions has something like that : a submodel that's only attached two steps later.
Glad to see even Lego "allows" this kind of things 🙂
(I don't even know why I ever thought it was bad design : if it works in the end, it works !)
I think the old Star wars sets had a handful of sets with subconstructions for moving parts. I'm not remembering what, but somewhere I had 1x2 tiles with the extra ridge piece sandwiched between a 10x1 smooth and a regular 10x1 that allowed a tray to slide
Yep, it's called "trapping". There's a really neat stud reversal technique that takes advantage of it, which can be one of the most elegant methods if you have the space for it. Here's a video demonstrating the basic principle. Of course, you can also leave the pieces free to move along one axis for useful sliding features as well.
That set frustrated me. Trying to get Kevin on the sled at the top of the stairs so you can use the little thingy to push him down - basically impossible once the 2nd floor is attached.
41629 Boba Fett Brickheadz has a really neat build with pieces nestled in a gap without being connected to the main build via any physical connections.
Its Lego engineering. Deep in their design mines they have Sayonce rings attempting to discover new applications for pieces in dark and heinous rituals...
This happens with the F1 Ferrari hold. A little micro build at the driver’s seat is held together by friction from 2 other pieces. It works well enough, but it it’s pretty easy to misalign and mess up too.
The Tudor corner house also uses floating pieces resembling truss in the attic. I have also never seen this before. But this is also the only bigger set I own.
I just went through this yesterday! Thought I had screwed something up, I couldn’t believe there would be a floating piece. Thanks for validating that I did the right thing!
I’m in the process of building the X-Men mansion and there was a piece like this also. And like you I hadn’t seen one that doesn’t snap to other studs before that
I just did this one yesterday! Was wondering how unusual the floating piece was, I haven't built too many other sets.
I'm really loving this set. The figures look so good IRL, I can't wait to finish them all and hang them up
In the next steps the yellow pieces will go on top locking it in but you're right it is interesting it's not on any studs
Thanks for explaining !

Oh yeah! I remember something like that too. I also think something in the Monster Fighters series had a similar idea like that as well.
I think you're right, can't remember which set but maybe the naboo sub?
There was also one of those in the 1994 Spyrius space base set
New Jango Fett ship has the same, it is locked in later and is part of the mechanism to eject the seismic charge

The marvel X-mansion, has a step almost exactly the same as this in the build for the sentinel mech. I was confused at first.
Doesn't the pyramid of Giza do the same thing with the steps?
It was Trafalgar Square (21045)

Hmm, I might as well not put the triangle piece there and save that piece for my spares pile.
There’s quite a few things in the home alone house that’s not supposed to be attached to studs, and none of em get locked in. Slightly aggravating XD
That set frustrated me. Trying to get Kevin on the sled at the top of the stairs so you can use the little thingy to push him down - basically impossible once the 2nd floor is attached.
Indeed, used some spares to mount the chairs to the table
Ship-in-bottle has a few of these
It does? … Ohhhhhhhh! Yep, it does.
I literally finished building this set this morning! And you're correct. Fun set!
Aston Martin Speed Champions set. The hood has a piece like this, and it's one of my favorite design choices ever in a set.
There’s been a couple Astons. F1? Pace Car? Bond DB5?
i just finished this set a couple days ago and thought this was so annoying!

To be fair, that's half the fun of building sets. I build the StarWars Droid Scooter yesterday and every 10th step I was like "they're doing what?!".
And yet they will never grace us with the infamous studs-on-bottom-and-top plate 😢
Say twice

Held in place by just those doors being closed
Yeah exactly. But nothing locks / studs in. Ivey easy to misalign.
It took me a few minutes to wrap my head around it. Fun build
I didn’t notice that bit when I built it lol

Similar build technique used in the Horizon Tallneck. Speaking of.....here's to hoping 2026 brings us a Thunderjaw or Tremortusk!!
Some of the bigger City sets use floating sliding doors in their buildings. The Hospital 60204 comes to mind as I recently built it

what is the set?
It’s the Keith Haring Dancing Figures. Lots of fun to build. Very relaxing!
I just went through this yesterday! Thought I had screwed something up, I couldn’t believe there would be a floating piece. Thanks for validating that I did the right thing!
I just built this today too and noted the same, haha
The recent Gameboy set has something similar for the d-pad.
I’m in the process of building the X-Men mansion and there was a piece like this also. And like you I hadn’t seen one that doesn’t snap to other studs before that
Is there any kind of icon on the other end of the arrow?
Nope. Just the triangle piece to put in.
I just did this one yesterday! Was wondering how unusual the floating piece was, I haven't built too many other sets. I'm really loving this set. The figures look so good IRL, I can't wait to finish them all and hang them up
Can I interest you in the pages of Tom Riddle's diary in the Hogwarts Icons (i.e. Hedwig) set?
