What a difference 28 years makes.

He was right about some things at least

    parent
    74 points fondlemeLeroy

Yeah. His politics were just absolute horse shit. Like most Americans, unfortunately.

    parent root
    10 points FrontFew1249

I don't think "most Americans" would become friends with Timothy McVeigh though, yanno?

    parent root
    12 points alverez667

Tim seemed like he was such an absolute dumbass. For all Ted’s faults, he was a literal fucking genius so just seems like a crazy friendship— like Stephen Hawking hanging out with someone like Epstein…oh wait.

This most recent update episode reminded me of something I did as a kid. My dad’s a programmer and owns his own small tech business. I remember seeing the Unsolved Mysteries segment on the Unabomber when I was like 8 or so, and I promptly wrote a letter to give to my dad with the list of what to look out for.

Even though my dad was very much small fries when it came to the tech industry, I was so scared he was gonna get a random bomb in a box to his office one day. I should ask him if he still has that letter. If he does and knows where it is, I’ll see if he can scan it and email it to me. That would be a gem of a find.

Kid logic:  Worried about dad because Unabomber

Also kid logic : I should voice these concerns in a letter.

"You opened this, thus proving me right. Please listen closely Dad."

Oh, that’s so sweet. Please share if he’s able to find it.

He hasn’t texted me back yet, but tbf he’s 85. Probably dozing.

    Probably dozing.

As he should! 85? Good for him!

Kaczynski was a straight up racist, misogynist and homophobe and these things are neither hard to not find in his self-published works, or something you can’t find enviromentalist and+or anti-tech writers who don’t base their ideology on those types of principles.

I have some personal sympathy for him as a product of his personal experiences, but I have no patience for people who a t like his only fault was ”being too early with the right ideas”

    parent
    42 points staunch_character

Yeah his manifesto is full of ridiculous bullshit. It’s easy to agree with some of his environmentalist points, but the next sentence will be ranting about how women shouldn’t be allowed to make decisions for themselves.

He’s basically the king of the incels.

    parent root
    27 points RabidLizard

its really horrifying to me how many people in this thread are just glossing over all of that

even if you're okay with bombing people (which is fucked), a great deal of his manifesto was just him blaming everything on "political correctness", lgbt activism and feminism. maybe we don't need to act like he was right all along lol

    parent root
    3 points FrontFew1249

They talk about his close friendship with TIMOTHY MCVEIGH in the episode!!! One absolutely, positively, does not have to "hand it to him"!!!

    parent root
    0 points ohsoGosu

People do the same shit to Heemeyer who almost by a matter of luck didn’t kill a bunch of innocent civilians. All because he was angry that his god given right to dump a bunch of literal human shit on his land was denied. A problem which took the new owners 24 hours to resolve.

Not sure what you're talking about because I'm just a frog... Anyway the water was nice and minute ago but starting to get a bit too warm.

Never forget, our own government made Ted Kaczynski into the Unabomber.

    The misogynistic racist?

    parent
  • 15 points No-Comparison9750

Makes you wonder how he would have been if he'd gotten help. Or had never been part of those MK Ultra experiments.

    parent
    12 points hoodiemonster

oh the podcast guest he could have been 😭

    parent root

Alternate Universe Ted K: "Yeah, I was in a really dark place after dropping out of college. But, I ended up going to a group therapy session, joined a green peace group, and really found a sense of community. Now I help young men and women who are similarly disillusioned, as I was. I tell ya, it's been a wonderful ride!"

And of course you conveniently leave out all the racist shit too

  • 7 points DiogenesHavingaWee

He was correct in diagnosing the illness, but incorrect in diagnosing the underlying cause.

    parent
  • 4 points Responsible-War-917

He was never wrong. The unabomber is villainized, the average American has no clue who Eric Rudolph is. Tech had taken over, abortion is less legal.

    parent
    29 points Burbujitas

I mean…he deserves to be villainized even if he was right about aspects of technology going south. Mailing bombs that kill and maim people tends to get you on a few shit lists, and deservedly so.

    parent root
    19 points HydeParkSwag

He was racist, homophobic, misogynistic piece of shit.

yep, people love to gloss over this for some reason. i will never understand why.

Too bad the term " woke" wasn't coined yet. He would have loved that

    parent root
    1 points Disastrous_Set_3148

I think a lot of people just assume he was a lefty because of his environmentalist and anti technology views.

    parent root
    2 points RabidLizard

which is why people should actually read his manifesto before cosigning it

    parent root
    33 points avoozl42

I think he was wrong to send bombs to people.

    parent root
    11 points sk4p

He wasn’t wrong in his writing about technology. I agreed with much of that the first time I read it.

But he was wrong to kill people, and he also says some racist things in the manifesto IIRC.

  • 1 points zoolilba

I can't get over his manifesto being in Spotify as an audio book

    parent
  • 1 points Inscrutablejrt

I appreciate gold star warnings, but I've never not listened to an episode because of them.

Starting off with sounds of Ed eating is a goddamned human rights violation which should have come with a bevy of warnings.
