I wish my school had hammered an additional language into my head.
Well, depends honestly. The Belgian school system did an extraordinarly good job to take all the fun out of learning French. It also focuses too much on force feeding you random vocabulary and advanced grammar, which doesn't leave much time to learn to apply said vocab and grammar in conversation. I am still grateful that I'm able to read advanced French texts while understanding most of it, but my lack in conversational confidence because of the aforementioned reasons makes me suck in speaking French.
It’s better than the A1+ level in French you get after 5 WHOLE YEARS with the Greek system
Kinda same here by the neighbors (the Netherlands). Haven’t finished it yet, but they take al the fun out of French and even more out of German
It is unfortunate because it isn't hard to make learning a language fun.
Unfortunately, I grew up in a small town in the US where we weren't introduced to another language until we were about 15. It is a huge disadvantage.
Yea, I have heard that the US is infamous for not being able to properly teach its students other languages
We start too late. It would be better to incorporate another language before high school. The problem is having states implement something like that. California does it with Spanish in some places, but other states wouldn't.
And oddly enough, done people get offended at the idea of learning another language. "Why should I learn their language. They should just speak English" sort of thing.
I absolutely agree with you. Even though I'm far from happy with the way I was thought French in school, I think that I'm better of with it. Especially since we started of relatively early on (5th grade)
How fluent are you in French? Just curious.
I'd say that I'm around a level B2, but I don't have the convsational confidence to speak, like, with my actual voice fluently
Ah, I see. I knew some cases where a language was taught in their school (because it is an official language in their country) but they can't practically converse with that language. (E.g., a particular Ashkenazi Jewish Israeli vlogger walked around Nazareth with his Christian Arab Israeli friend, but they conversed in English throughout the video because the Jewish guy can't speak Arabic despite learning it in school.)
Actually, I am interested in learning Serbo-Croatian. How did you learn it? Why did you study the language?
What made you interested in learning Serbo-Croatian?
My parents are from that region so I learned it as a weaker second native language. I am conversationally fluent in the language, but unable to teach any grammar. But a good basis should definitely not be a problem 😄
Do you speak to your parents using Serbo-Croatian or Dutch or a mix of both?
I used to mix them. But my parents kinda passive aggressively corrected me each time 😅. So I'd say that my Serbs-Croatian is pure.
Was your learning Serbo-Croatian mainly out of your own initiative (like you self-studied in any way while growing up) or you were taught some words by your parents when you were younger?
The latter
Cool! Do you plan to be more fluent in it in the future or you're contented with your conversational skills in that language?
For my intends and purposes, I'm rather contented with my level of fluency
