(This is a repost, as I think the title of my previous post made it difficult to turn up results in a language partner search.)

I'm 44, male, from the United States. I am currently a graduate researcher in anthropology and linguistics. I've been teaching myself Urdu/Hindi from two textbook for a couple months. I have a decent grasp of the basics of the grammar and a pretty good starting vocabulary (around 2,000 words), but I have very, very poor conversational skills. In the coming months, I'm hoping to expand my vocabulary beyond textbook words to learn how to talk about matters of interest, and to develop the ability to hold a good conversation. I can read both देवनागरी and نستعليق. I'd love a partner who can:

  • chat with me as I develop my ability to talk about different topics;
  • help me put together word lists for matters of interests;
  • help me understand the differences between words with similar meanings.

English is my native language. I worked for some years as an editor, and my graduate research is in linguistics, so I'm pretty good at helping people understand the patterns of the language. I can also help with written work. I don't have much experience putting together lesson plans, so I'd have a hard time being a teacher rather than a language partner. The things I listed above that I'm looking for in a language partner are all things that I can do quite well for English.

I'm happy to work with either people of any age or gender. I would like to start meeting on-line once or twice a week in early July.
