Really need to help and ideas with the layout/ design of this kitchen. I'm struggling to see how I can make it a nice environment and fit in everything I need. I currently have a washing machine, tumble dryer and fridge/freezer. Also some worktop space for cooking. I need to add an oven to this space whilst keeping some decent storage. I was thinking perhaps getting a smaller fridge and placing that in the bottom larder that would allow for an oven to go in that space. I just want to improve the general functionality of the room. For some context l've just moved into this bungalow after downsizing from a house. Open to any suggestion and feel free to ask for any extra information that will help your answers. Thank you in advance

  • I think you need a designer and/or architect/engineer. That space needs serious help if you really want to fix it. But the curtain has to go, might even be a fire hazard! (Looking at the crockpot!) And use recessed lighting. That bare bulb gave me shivers. I can’t believe someone opted for shorter cabinet to accommodate that bulb 😂 Not sure where the window ends in that nook but a more shallow cabinet would look better and probably be more useful storage.

Okay perhaps I’ll get in contact with someone. Yes of course the curtains aren’t great, more of a temporary fix. And honestly I’m struggling to understand the decision making when it comes to the lighting. The window finishes about 30cm from the back wall (the back of the shortened cabinet) thanks for the suggestions!

Yikes that is awkward! Almost unusable since one door opens in your face and the other can’t open far because of the curtain rod 😂 I think I’d get rid of the curtain rod, and look into inset shades for the window. Then look into a small cabinet to go on the same wall as the window. Maybe just big enough to hold your laundry supplies?

  • Maybe combining into a single washer/dryer would free up a bit of space?

That’s a a great idea! I never even thought of getting a combined washer/dryer. Thanks for the idea

I have one of the combination units. It won’t fit under a counter. The small RV or boat style will. Ours is a GE and was expensive. Just short of 3k.

That’s interesting, seems silly for them to be made to not fit under a counter. Thanks for the input

You're in Europe. You can buy a lot cheaper and better appliances and not the shitty US crap ;) There a re a lot wash-dryer which fits here.

I got one that fits in the same space under the counter from GE. It wasn’t that expensive, but it works on 120vac, and takes forever to dry though. Yet, I wouldn’t trade it

  • Your kitchen layout looks tight, but swapping to a smaller fridge and using that tall larder for an integrated oven could really open things up. I’ve seen similar small-space redesigns work well, and Legacy Custom Home Remodeling who I’ve worked with before often handles these compact setups nicely.

Yes I also think I should definitely downsize the fridge. The only issue with an integrated oven in the larder is the consumer unit being in the top cupboard. Perhaps it could be moved ? I’m not too sure if that’s possible

  • First off, what's your budget?

So I have a few thousand pound I could part ways with. I’m looking to keep it as cheap as possible really. I’m able to do most building work aside from plumbing and electrical that being said I’m sure I could manage with straightforward tasks.

I'd get an assessment of what you can and cannot move. In terms of kitchen storage, moving the washer and dryer would make a huge difference, and might be pretty cheap. Can you get cabinets to match the existing ones?

I agree with the other redditor, you need to get a designer/architect/engineer in there, too.

So who would be the right point of contact to get an assessment of what can be moved. And to be honest I’d be looking to replace the cabinets as they’re not the nicest looking

A plumber could tell you a lot, and it would probably be a free visit. Questions that need to be answered now are can the washer be moved into that alcove? What will it cost to put hookups in there? Thats the first problem that needs to be solved. If you go with a flush face cabinet or a Shaker style, it will be beautiful. Keep us updated.

  • That fridge is a great suggestion. And to be completely honest I don’t really use any freezer space so that can definitely be downsized. Yes the window could be blocked up, it isn’t really letting in any light anyway so it’s a bit useless.

So in the other side of the wall is strange sort of boiler room. I’ve attached a photo of it. I suppose the wall could be taken down and then some sort of unit put around the boiler to tidy it up ?

Ask a heating contractor about it. Ther may be a reason its needed. Talk to a plumber about whether you can stack the washer and dryer where the pantry is.

    Thanks for the clear advice

  • What are the curtains hiding?

    Just a window

Can you block that window, or is it looking out into yjr front yard. I'm with the suggestion that you lose the curtain, ASAP.

Which window are you talking about ? I’ll assume you mean the little one next to the larder. It does look into the front garden but I don’t see an issue with blocking it up. Ill get those curtains gone soon as haha

Block up the little one. It would be good to see that line of cabinets with the curtains open.

  • Oh my. That is truly horrible. I’d put the fridge in the back and close up the useless window. Tall, narrow fridge, to one side.

Consider full-extension drawer slides to make narrow pull-outs beside the fridge for bottles and cans and maybe cooking utensils.

    Combine w/d

Drawers on the bottom everywhere. Small stove. Who needs even 4 burners in such a small space. Induction

Single bowl sink, 24” wide max.

Yeah I think putting a fridge in the back is probably my best bet. Thank you for the other suggestions I’ll take them into consideration

  • The correct lighting will also make a huge difference. Go about that intentionally, and with the help of a lighting designer. It will be money well spent.

What sort of lighting would you suggest. The tube lighting most definitely needs to go

  • Is the dryer electric or gas?

    The dryer is electric

  • A stacked washer/dryer combo would free up space. Combination dual function units are expensive & haven't come far enough along yet. You already have the appliances to stack. What size stove do you need for cooking? Maybe more space there? Refrigerator: bottom freezer? Usually more efficient. How much storage will you need? All considerations.

It would be cheaper to just keep the separate washer and dryer. I haven’t had a chance to looking into the combination units yet so thank you for the advice. I don’t need a big stove at all. Something compact would do just fine. Bottom freezer yes,. I’m leaning towards getting a new fridge/freezer as the one I have currently is honestly too big and is wasted space. I don’t need crazy amounts of storage, obviously the most I can get out of the space would be ideal but I understand I may have to make some sacrifices.

I have a washer & a dryer like you. Had the dryer stacked on top of the washer. That's why I said you can stack your existing units. A small 26" apartment stove would do. Your other plans seem spot on.
