Today I started trying Keto. I’m not a very good cook so I’m starting with sandwiches. I bought Nature’s Own Life Keto Bread (Soft white) and it tastes and smells like chemicals. Is this normal? Or did I buy a bad batch? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

  • It’s made of highly processed derivative food products. Read the ingredients. I’m not bashing on chemistry and science, but you shouldn’t expect fake bread to smell real.

Also, a lot of us don’t do well with fake bread products - they spike blood sugar almost as bad as real bread and knocks out of ketosis. So, be aware that the chemistry based food solutions may not be the solution you want. Lettuce wraps make decent sandwiches of bread doesn’t work out.

Exactly, bread is already processed. You remove it of carbs and sugar and you’re left with an artificial abomination, from a nutrient perspective at least.

Oops meant to reply to Op

  • It won’t ever smell normal and is definitely a frankenfood, so there’s a reason for that. But the substitutes start to taste more tolerable when you’ve been off the “real stuff” longer. There’s also pretty stark difference by brand - Hero has been the best I’ve found.

I pretty much stick to the extreme wellness zero net carb tortillas (they taste like any other wheat tortilla) and the egg life wraps. hero is great but I can't really afford it other than a birthday treat. but these two are great, I recognize the ingredients, and the net carbs are near zero. aside from hero I have never found a keto 'bread' that didn't spike my sugar, only these tortillas and wraps.

Despite liking Hero best, I agree that I don’t really buy it. Mostly because it leads to bad habits and I’m still trying to lose more weight (plus that price tag!). It doesn’t seem to spike me, but my body also just doesn’t seem to be as optimally keto on it (some of the other brands of bread/tortillas definitely spike and all have that general meh effect). Whole foods all the way as much as possible.

  • Because that bread shouldn't be eaten.

  • Keto bread is notoriously terrible. A lot of folks just skip it all together and make a lettuce wrap (or just put your contents in the meat and roll it up). The only one I find acceptable are the Hero brand hotdog and hamburger buns. I think their sliced bread tastes like styrofoam. Low carb wraps are generally very good.

  • My recommendation is to buy nothing that is labeled "keto"

  • If you can afford, buy HERO brand—exceptional Keto breads/tortillas/bagels/croissants!

    Yep! Buns are great also!

I just tried a Hero bagel for breakfast this morning. It was very good. I also got money back from Ibotta for buying Hero products.

  • I buy orowheat seeded keto bread. It’s a lot closer to real bread taste/texture and about the same price point. Just don’t toast it unless you want a weird, gummy cracker.

Orowheat is definitely one of the better ones but they are so expensive.

I found it at Walmart in their small keto bread area. It was the same price as their non-keto bread, like $5/loaf

  • Ugh, I just bought and threw out that brand but it was buns. Totally inedible

  • Use whole foods - meat, veggies, good fats and a bit of dairy.

  • I dont ever eat those weird keto substitutes.

Just accept. It's better than getting those weird unnatural substances inside you. Just eat natural.

Or perhaps just cheat once in a while with the real thing.

  • I do the Aunt Millys Carb Smart from Walmart and it doesn’t taste like chemicals, tastes like 95% regular bread. That said I have tasted some low carb bread that’s gross. You gotta shop around

  • Natures Own is weird smelling and tasting. And it throws me out of ketosis. If you have Aunt Millie’s where you live, try that.

  • That brand specifically is strange to me in smell and taste and texture. That’s why I buy Lewis keto bread. 😆

    I like their hawaiian bread.

  • Yikes, I'm glad we hadn't bought that specific brand.

My husband buys the "keto culture" bread, and says he can't really tell the difference.

If it's not out of your price range, try Hero bread; it's really good (according to him) and a bit healthier.

  • make your own - I buy when I'm too tired...look for starch - it spikes you terribly.

Do you have a keto bread recipe you love that you can share?

These are like the real deal. Don't worry about the sugar/syrup - it gets eaten by the yeast and forms the gas bubbles. I don't have a gluten allergy so the vital wheat gluten is ok for me. Make sure you're using oat FIBER (not flour). I have trouble with almond flour and oxalates, so I can't have any of those recipes. https://www.marystestkitchen.com/vegan-keto-sandwich-rolls/#mv-creation-192-jtr

Edited to say that I put various ingredients in these too - Italian seasoning, roasted garlic with herbs, just powdered garlic....yum! They freeze well too - so make a batch and freeze what you won't eat in a day.

  • Highly recommend making Ketotwins egg white chaffles recipe. I have a sandwich nearly every day for lunch.

  • I’ve tried many different keto breads by this point. Nature’s Own is by far the absolutely worst one. The best I’ve tried so far is the keto wheat Bettergoods brand. Bettergoods is a Walmart private label, so I was surprised it was better than any others I’ve tried. Problem is I haven’t been able to find it in stock for over a month. No employee seems to be able to verify if they quit making it or not.

  • Keto bread that doesn't have that pungent smell is rare. The only ones that don't are Kroger Carbmaster bread (which I haven't seen in stores for over a year) and keto bread from Costco (I don't remember the name, but it has seeds in it).

  • I recommend buying keto friendly tortillas. You can make sandwich wraps and it’ll help you transition better. You can even make a quesadilla or tortilla chips by toasting in frying pan with some oil or butter and seasoning.

  • Carbonaut taste identical to real bread imo. No odd smell that I could detect.

  • Sami’s bakery has some good low-carb options. They are local, so my go to, but they also do mail order

  • I make my own bread. “Keto bread” spikes my blood sugar. 90 second keto bread is really easy and tastes good. It’s almond flour, egg, olive oil and baking soda. You slice it in half and toast it after it’s done and it’s tasty. It doesn’t spike my blood sugar

  • Just my 2c but you will have a much better time new to keto by sticking with whole food - fresh meat and veg. Don’t try to recreate some Frankenstein of your normal foods.

  • Things that taste like crap tend to smell like crap.

  • Because whatever it is IS weird.

  • Aldi brand is a lot better fyi

  • Steve from Serious Keto likes Unbelievabuns, and he rarely steers me wrong. in fact, he's the only Keto influencer i follow regularly. some of his recipes are a bit complex/fussy for me, but i enjoy those episodes anyway.

  • Keto bread 🤣
