Hi everyone, I've been doing keto for a while now and my cravings for sweets and carbs have disappeared. I've lost weight, I go to the gym, I have more energy, and the brain fog has cleared. But I discovered peanut butter (I live in Spain) and I buy the 100% peanut butter version. I love it, and it's impossible for me to eat just one spoonful... A 500g jar can last me four or five days. Any ideas on how to combat this? I know that if it's 100% peanut butter, it doesn't have as many carbs, but I think it might kick me out of ketosis. Should I stop buying it?
Yeah. I've never had any amount of peanut butter (100% of course) that didn't interfere with my weight loss progress.
It's just not an option for me.
No advice. I can't keep nuts or nut butter in the house. I devour it :(
I treat it as a dessert. I'll only have one spoonful with a few dark chocolate chips and sf whip cream on top.
Don't buy it!
you might try dehydrated peanut butter with no sugar added. it has about half the net carbs (4) and the extra step of having to stir in water makes it difficult to indulge.
Warning: this comment is completely missing the point of your post OP…
… but have you tried blending cottage cheese with a tbsp of peanut butter? It’s basically crack.
I’m sorry!!!!
Signed: a fellow peanut butter late addict.
I’ve never tried that and cannot imagine what it’s like, but it’s reminding me of the time my dad got super excited over the combination of peanut butter and fried onions on toast. I shook my head, but then I tried it. Quite good!
I cannot do without peanut butter. I don't eat it every day, but most days. However, I get my big spoonful and put it away. I love it, but I know how calorie dense it is. All I can tell you is, if you can't control your portions, don't buy it at all.
Same same. At first I did not like the taste very much (so strong!), but I got into it recently...
I manage the craving in a few ways:
- One teaspoon (well, ok brain, two teaspoons, but that's it!) a week at most
- Rarely, as a reward to myself for out of the ordinary achievements
- never on an empty stomach: if ungry, I will always choose nutrient-dense/low-cal food first (boiled eggs!).
All in all, I basically set myself a few rules and stick to them, but I am generally quite well disciplined when it comes to food choices, so that my not be adapted to someone else.
In that case, the 'no nut products in my house' rule might be better.
I only buy a jar once every couple months bc I overeat it.
The only way I can control myself with peanut butter is to only occasionally buy roasted peanuts and make my own. The combination of only sporadic access to the peanuts and the bother of dragging out my blender, making the nut butter and cleaning everything up after are big enough speed bumps to prevent me from getting into too much trouble. Though the freshly made butter is significantly better tasting, so that isn't a barrier!
This is brilliant. This is my answer.
1 tablespoon has between 3-4 carbs.
Stop buying it, yup. That’s what I had to do.
I'm looking at your description of what you've achieved through Keto and how you're going with it, and I think a small amount of this peanut delicacy can be justified. 500g over a few days seems excessive, but get back to one spoonful as a treat and you'll be fine.
Just realised I have a peanut butter dessert problem. Going to stop now.
So you don't want my recipe for keto PB fudge?
Yes, yes I do.
Can I have this recipe please? I swear I’ll try to be responsible with it.
Haha I actually developed several, they're scrawled in one of my kitchen logs.
A lot of heavy cream and allulose are involved.
I try to limit one heaping teaspoon a day. Better if I can skip it. I buy grind your own peanut butter at Winco
I make chocolate peanut butter fat bombs (dark cocoa, no sugar added peanut butter, swerve, pecans, coconut oil) and keep them in my freezer for a quick treat. The allulose doesn’t impact me staying in ketosis, and they’re portioned so I know exactly what I’m getting carb-wise
Took me a good 2-3 tubs of peanut butter before realizing that it is a problem. I personally just had to stop. Even small amounts, I notice my clothes not fitting!
Consider using powdered PB? I use PB2 and it's less carbs, more protein and the flavor is good.
👋 I remind you that peanuts are NOT nuts, but legumes. Nut butter would be better. 🤗
Not if overconsumption is the primary issue! Nut butters are just as calorie-dense and just as likely to be overeaten as a result because they’re also absolutely delicious. 🙂
And there’s nothing wrong with legumes that fit into your macros/carb budget!
I think all the answers point to not buying peanut butter anymore...
I lived in Spain many years ago as an exchange student from the U.S. and remember going from store to store searching for peanut butter. I didn’t miss home, but I MISSED peanut butter!
I swapped peanut butter for unsweetened sunflower seed butter. 18g fat, 7g protein, 2 net carbs per 2tbsp. It is more satisfying imo. I take it with my vitamins to help with absorption too.
I've never eaten sunflower seed butter, but here in Spain "pipas" are very popular—sunflower seeds with shells and salt... I love them.
Freeze it so that you literally have to hammer some out and wait for it to defrost
It seems like a good idea, but I'm a very patient person...
I use mini scales, figure exactly how much i can have per day, and I have exactly that amount. My whole life is playing with the numbers so i can eat more peanut butter.
Peanut butter is my kryptonite too. Once that jar's open, it's game over.
The 100% stuff is still pretty carb heavy when youre eating half a jar. I track everything in Welling to review my diet and was shocked how fast those carbs add up even with ""natural"" peanut butter.
I use 100% peanut peanut butter in smoothies with almond milk, yoghurt that’s 2g carb per 100g serving, cacao powder and a small bit of banana. Super delicious and pretty low carb if you don’t overdo the banana (the flavour is strong anyway).
I also use the same yoghurt and mix a small amount of peanut butter and cacao into it and freeze them as ice lollies in moulds for us and the little one. I make berry ones also. So great!
By sipping the smoothie or sucking the lolly you extend the time you get to enjoy the flavour so won’t need to consume a whole bunch.
Same, I just buy the smaller jar on rare ocasions, and mainly as an ingredient to make somethimg else
This, don’t eat it on its own. Make a keto waffle and put it on it with a couple berries.
I get peanut butter flavoured protein shakes or powder to satisfy that craving
There are 11.6 grams of net carbs in 100 grams of PB. We keep it in the frig, so it doesn’t separate. It’s tough getting much cold PB out of the jar, and it then takes a while to warm up.
Try that way. You’ll more naturally eat less than 5 net grams of carbs in PB, and if you use an espresso spoon, it takes longer to eat so feels like more.
I have peanut butter when it fits in macros. You can add it to whipped heavy cream and cream cheese, make homemade peanut butter cups, etc.
Just got a bag of It's Just powdered peanut butter and it's very low in carbs for adding to smoothies https://a.co/d/gE5IsBV
I can't let myself eat it because I can't stop either. Also I think it causes me inflammation because the scale usually shows it after I eat it the next day n
Being keto you understand sacrifice. I personally would allow myself a jar per month. Knowing that is all there is until a predetermined time in the future may help.
I make pb cookies and pb bars with a dark chocolate topping. A huge peanut butter fan, but I do limit consumption.
You seem addicted to its sweetness, even though it contains no sugar. If you don't have the discipline to treat peanut butter as a dessert, you are better off not buying it. Just like any human endeavor, including following a keto diet, discipline, and moderation are key to its success.
Actually, it only happens with that; I can control myself with other foods... I can eat just peanut butter and pieces of 95% dark chocolate, but peanut butter is addictive for me.
I understand. If it is like an addiction, then you are better off not buying it. You have to deliver yourself from temptation...
The best thing about it is 3 Tbsp looks just like 1 tbsp.. magic
ya i will eat pb until physically sick 🤢 so it needs to stay unbought 😮💨😂
i crave nut butters often, this is what i get. it may not be available where youre at: single serving pouches of almond butter. i pick one up at the store...and only one at each time. that forces me to respect portion control, 1 pouch has 5 grams carbs

Peanut butter is about £1 for a jar here. I buy it, have a spoon, have 3 more and then I chuck it. I just can't keep it in the house lol. I used to just eat the ENTIRE jar, so I call this progress.
Buy the completely sugar free peanut butter. It’ll kick your habit real quick 🤮
No way! 100% peanut butter is so addictive.
I always buy unsweetened, 100% peanut peanut butter and I love it... Sugar isn't the problem.
Just don't buy it or have it at home.
Maybe get it once a month instead of every every week
I depend on peanut butter during keto. I walk my legs off with all the energy. Fabulous
You could try hazelnutbutter instead. It contains less carbs and is very tasty. You can find it in Rossman.
Thank you, I've tried it and I like it, but I almost prefer eating whole hazelnuts with salt.
Peanut butter is my weakness as well… I just don’t buy it anymore. Just too calorie dense.
