Throughout her career she has revisited multiple genres: disco, dance, pop-trap, etc., but I always wondered why she wouldn't make another pop rock song like in her earlier days. You could make the argument that she only did pop rock because it was popular at the time, but to me she looked truly in love with the genre.

Thoughts?

  • I wanna know the same thing cus one of the boys is her her best album tbh 😭🙏

  • I think the labels shot down anything pop rock, they saw it dying with the fall of MySpace. Even powerhouses in rock like Florence Welch , Beth Ditto, The Last Dinner Party for a very recent example don’t get the respect and success they deserve .

You have to be an S-tier talent to get a tenth of what a main pop girl has and that’s not disrespect to pop girls. They just get their flowers

You don’t get successful “ meh “ talents in any rock genre getting to like Demi Lovato fame even and there used to be dozens of bands around that success

  • She said in a interview once that when she was touring with one of the boys she noticed people were not dancing and that inspired to go for a more poppier upbeat sound with teenage dream

Which is bc I think Hot N Cold, Waking Up in Vegas, and I Kissed a Girl are certifiably danceable :)

I remember there was a hot n cold remix with lmfao that used to play on radio with other edm songs at the time

It was fun to listen and dance to I don’t think it’s on streaming though

  • I think the pop rock sound in OOTB was heavily pushed by her label(s). The sound was was very popular in the early and mid 2000s and of course record labels wanted to capitalise of the success of popular pop rock artists. I think in the Part Of Me film someone said that "they wanted her to be the next Avril Lavigne but she just wanted to be the first Katy Perry".

And as soon as OOTB was out and proved to be successful, she decided to move to a more electronic sound. The pop rock already started to become very dated then. Remember some songs from the album were written as early as 2005. and with new electro pop releases like "The Fame" by Lady Gaga becoming more and more successful, it became obvious that this sound was going to be the future. Maybe Katy shifted to this sound because it became the industry standard or maybe because pop rock was merely a stepping stone for her. I guess only Katy herself knows the exact reason.

She did make pop rock when she was still kate hudson. It is clearly her favourite genre

That and Alanis Morrisette's Jagged Little Pill was one of her favorite records right before OOTB

  • Speaking as someone who loves rock I LOVED her pop rock stuff and it always felt more authentic.

I sometimes wonder what it would have been like had katy not gone through the industry and was still a normal pop rock artist

  • Because it’s not mainstream enough for her team to think it’s worth revisiting. But honestly, at this point, I do think she should. Imagine if she did for KP7!

  • Why? IDK, once upon a time she was the cool Indie Rock who dated rockers.

  • Cause she was told to follow trends to gain success, I think she didn't have much of a say for a while.
