An extreme juxtaposition of idealized(and often problematic) girlhood and sweetness combined with real world industrial cruelty of the worst kind. Other similar images were shared around a lot.
As the years went by, it became more clear that a lot of these people who were using these images were not being ironic. Moe style anime made it look cute, less threatening, more ironic, etc.
It certainly also didn’t help that the demographic of people most likely to be in these online spaces were terminally online, isolated and deeply disturbed. A prime demographic for radicalization. Gamergate, the Alt-Right, incels, you already know where this is going.
I watched a ton of anime, especially from that era. I will not say, “oh it was actually all trash”. It wasn’t. The stories were often tender and sentimental. Sometimes absolutely beautiful. But I think you know what I’m going to say, frequently also very creepy in regard to underage girl characters. Frequently infantilized and so on and so forth.
For these creeps, a girl like that would be their ideal. And I will just say it, there is a very strong correlation between the sexual assault of children and far-right politics. It’s common, it’s everywhere and it’s horrifying. Fascism is power for the sake of power, control for the sake of control and cruelty for the sake of cruelty, everything else is just noise. For people like that, power of children is deeply appealing.
