  • I don’t know what this fool is talking about but when you are set at a station and have zero training, you should be expect to be trained! Good for you for sticking it out as long as you did. That dude must have been your manager.

What reason did they give for firing you.

    [removed]

To weeks is wild. I wonder what an unemployment lawyer would say. I have has to term people one was strung out on drugs and constantly passing out at work and another got stabby. The amount of paperwork needed for a judge to find in our favor was wild. Like the bar is attempted murder in some places so I feel it is worth seeing if you have a case.

Truth. At will Means the manager could fire him because he smells like skittles and kitten bellies.

If you live in the US then you likely live in an at will state. Which means they can fire you for whatever reason they want for a lot longer than 3 months. A decade down the road they can hate and fire you for your favorite causal Friday khakis. 🤷‍♀️

Edited - just saw you’re from Canada. Good luck. I hope you find something great soon.

I don’t know the laws where you are at. I’m sorry for your loss of income.

Showing respect to those who are better than you in the workplace will go a long way, child.

  • It sounds like you didn’t fit in, and either didn’t catch on as fast as other new employees, or they didn’t like your attitude/work ethic and wanted you to fail. Management was apparently in agreement about the situation and you were fired.

    [removed]

You probably walked in and acted arrogant, so they decided to see if you had the skills to back it up. Clearly, you did not. Now, you have no job and guess what? Their opinion of you will follow you wherever you try to get work in a kitchen. Maybe you should've been more humble, youngster. Good luck in your future endeavors outside the kitchen--as outside the kitchen is where you will be. Buh-Bye!

    What the heck

Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning lol

  • Hospitality is incredibly hit and miss.

I am in the process of getting back into it after working in the insurance industry for a couple years.

Luckily I’ve never been fired from anywhere, but I’ve seen very high levels of nepotism and bully behavior that ended in termination. Sorta like what happened to you.

What was your job title? Just curious

    [removed]

Probably should have declined the offer to cook but I understand why you might have said yes based on needing to pay the bills.

Don't take it personal, they didn't want to train and you can't be expected to just absorb in a flash.

    [removed]

Call them back and tell them that have started a secret training and willing to improve. Also tell them you dont want to be behind in rent to make it sound like you really have some special training going on.

    [removed]

Go back in and ready for 2nd round. Tell them you want to try again

Do you really think it can be easily smoothed over like that? Or are you trolling?

If they desperate enough to move a server to a cook line? Yea or maybe that was his second chance.

I take it you didn’t have much cooking experience?

    [removed]

LMAO, then you were set up to fail, especially if they let you go within a couple weeks.

2 completely different roles lol. I would’ve lost my hat.

It’s not like you can’t get another job at the restaurant next door, but it’s frustrating to go through this nonetheless.

    [removed]

In the service industry, I’m almost certain you can

Its way harder than it was.

3y ago - before I was out of industry for 2.5y - I had my pick of jobs in service in FOH within reason (not mixologist, I have bar experience but im still slow. But im a solid server with years in). Some restaurants want 3 interviews to be a server now. Took me 3-4 weeks to find a job. In that time I got 4 offers and went to 10+ interviews. 3 offers ended up being BS, no follow through, "how about starting next week instead?" type shit. I am now waking up at 430 am to serve breakfast. 3y ago I was doing professional wine services.

I'm just saying that hospitality has taken the same hit as every other sector

I hate that you're getting downvoted when it's absolutely true. I literally sat last week, calling everywhere from IHOP to McDonald's to Olive Garden to see if they were hiring for various positions and the responses through the phone alone were overwhelmingly negative

So I can't imagine a specialty like mixology or serving.

IHOP gave me an interview and then at the end of the interview the dude TOLD ME HE DIDNT HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO HIRE ME AND ASKED ME TO COME BACK. told me he was training as a manager.

I was willing to interview at and work at ihop, but i was not willing to go through a whole interview with someone I thought had the authority to hire me for them to turn around and basically tell me they couldn't. No idea why I was told to go there at that time. They sent me another interview request like the first never even happened and I declined to waste further time.

    Its bad out there.

    Jesus christ...

I was assuming something like a bar back being forced to host in a customer facing role. But putting somebody on the line with no experience just to fire them 2 weeks later is crazy.

That's a huge difference. Lot's of pressure on line cooks.

  • Wait did he tell you you would be working your last shift? Or he told you you worked your last shift after the fact? If a manager said you're fired after this shift I sure as hell wouldn't be working anymore

  • Doesn’t even matter tbh. On to the next.

  • Leave reviews. Indeed, Google, Glass Door. Review the shit out of working for this company.

  • Most jobs I've had have been minimal training and then-GO! Clearly you weren't a good fit with them.

  • I would imagine a busy, successful restaurant has had a lot of experience in training multiple employees over the years. They are probably good at figuring out who is going to fit in and work out and who isn’t.

They might also be used to new hires having significant previous restaurant experience and therefore the ability to catch on and do the job without much effort.

  • Jacks restaurant?

    [removed]

For the non Ontarioan's this is like an Applebee's but much smaller chain.

  • Which position was it and whst they made you do?

  • Appears to be managers playing the game of « musical chairs. »

Who knows what happened to your manager. Likely lost a battle with the other faction.

Not much that can be done. You were in the « wrong place, » at the « wrong time, » with the « wrong skills » at no fault of your own.

  • Welcome to the club!! Sorry home boy you’re going through this I got fired back in febuary and unemployment stopped October struggling to pay my bills and am behind on everything and in so much debt no job is hiring me that’s serious at least

  • This happened to me once in a cold food kitchen. I applied as a cook, ( have experience as a metabolic chef intern at UCLA ), got the job for a damned runner because he quit Literally as I was walking in ( should have took the hint but I was young and desperate for money).

Lasted about 3 weeks. 5min training. My trainer had broken English, and none of the my co workers spoke English at all.

  • What a toxic ass workplace.....sounds like wrongful termination..

  • I understand it is disappointing and you need the money. Can u file for unemployment while job hunting? I was at a job - different profession - it lasted about 2 weeks for the same reason except i got sick of being ignored so i started charging my time to LWOP or nothing at all. I called my head hunter and told her it was total bs. She said to be polite and don't abandon the job and she would find me something else which she did. It wasn't you at all. You weren't there long enough to mess up. There are total eff up employers abd managers out there!

  • Holy shit being a line cook is no joke. That's a super fast paced job and if you have zero experience and no support you're going to die on the line. I would never be a line cook you have to be a super multitasker and really good at doing stuff without thinking first, almost working on pure muscle memory. Sorry about that. Next time be a prep cook first and work up to working as a line cook.

  • Wow, you have a high level of disrespect for people who know more than you do about the job. No wonder you got fired. Maybe work on your attitude and next time come into a job assuming you don't know everything.

What is up with people on this sub being bootlickers

    [removed]

Don't worry about it. Some restauraunt people are great & some are miserable being there & it shows. Mgmt. Usually sets the mood by their actions. Find something better.

Don’t give up. It was a bad fit. Doesn’t mean you can’t learn new things.

This happens a lot, maybe even to most people.

I’m sorry it didn’t work out. Maybe next time offer to be an actual trainee? Or buss tables? Or dishwasher? If this restaurant is well liked, try to consider it as training you received for any future jobs.

I'm serious as a heart attack, youngster. Your post comes off like you think you're smarter than everyone at the restaurant and totally disrespectful of the lot of them. You need to learn respect for your betters and be willing to learn, child.

Calling someone "youngster" and "child" ... sorry, who needs to learn respect here?

Everyone who agrees with the OP, obviously.

    Here you go!

wanting perfection is bad now? maybe be a bit more careful and respectful next time.

LMAO. Either you’re a boomer or are trolling

Nope, I call it like it is. Don't like it, feel free to downvote me. But you won't get me banned because I am not breaking any rules. Now, away with you.

    You’re a sad person

  • Yeah I would have fired you also, does not sound like you wanted to be there and it probably showed by your bad attitude so they fired your ass. You will probably be struggling a lot in life since you are unemployable without an attitude adjustment.

    [removed]

Then find something you like to do or pretend you enjoy what you are doing until you find something else. People can tell when you don't like your job and don't want to be there.

  • Who was it that hired you for that other position?

    Was it your manager?

  • Heh heh, how exactly did they treat you like a donkey? How does that differ you from treating you like, say, a dog?

Expecting work for pay and catching on at a reasonable pace,.. ridiculous expectations. How dare those mf's disrespect!
