  • I’m sure finding a lawyer will be the best first step to work through this.

  • I wouldn’t trust that the office workers are right about this. When I got married to my Japanese husband and tried to update my name at the bank, all the workers there asked which citizenship I chose when I got married and wouldn’t believe me when I said I didn’t get to choose. It took hours of them confirming with people on the phone to get things sorted. I would first go to your local office and get your daughter’s koseki which will prove her citizenship and this can’t be changed. You can’t just lose your citizenship without going through any process to give it up. Then take the koseki to the passport office in person, perhaps with laws printed out in Japanese. Even better if you can go with a Japanese person (their other parent?).

  • Why did you not tick the dual citizenship box previously, multiple times? It’s completely legal for a minor. They must have thought that she gained Australian citizenship later on which results in loss of Japanese citizenship
