Hi , I am freshly married and live in japan , I got pregnant even with protection and unfortunately me and my husband still don’t have a proper job that can help us, so i want to go for abortion and I am only five weeks now , but surgeries and pill are hella expensive in here so I ordered from Women on web but I am a little worried about the customs , I’ve read here that the pills not allow to enter Japan. Does anyone have any idea about this . I am so sad that i need to get the abortion and feel very hopeless .

  • If you want to go through with it safely, spending the money now will save you a lot more money later...

  • As long as the particular pill you ordered is not banned in Japan, you should be okay. For future reference, there’s a way to get birth control for about ¥980. DM me if you’re interested. I’ll tell you what you could say to an OBGYN

Could you please dm me the same thing please? I paid 10k yen for this.

Not OP, but I just DMed you too!

Fr, that sounds super tough but gotta think about your health first, stay safe out there

I'm not sure about this particular medication but just because something is legal to have in Japan, or even to bring into Japan, doesn't necessarily mean it's legal to import by mail. I'm aware of at least one case where someone did the proper paperwork to bring their prescription into Japan but they had sent their medication along separately with their personal belongings without realizing that was very illegal and they got charged with drug smuggling and deported regardless.

Hi DMed you, pls tell me too

This is not true. At home abortion with an abortifacient is 自己堕胎罪 and punishable under the penal code. Only doctors are allowed to administer abortions in Japan

In an early pregnancy, there would be no way of proving such a crime took place.

And FYI, the Japanese law against “abandoning a corpse” does not apply to unborn human remains in the first trimester.

I know this for a fact because I miscarried at home and flushed the embryo down the toilet, and my OB/GYN said this was not illegal (though she told me if it ever happened again, I should bring it to show her so that she could determine whether the miscarriage was complete or if I would need further treatment).

I’m not discussing the potential for prosecution but this would certainly be provable based on digital communications and the purchase of abortion pills which is why digital security would be important

死体遺棄 (covered under article 190 of the penal code) and 堕胎罪 (articles 212-216 of the penal code) are different crimes

The former has been used to punish women who have suffered stillbirths at home which is its own issue but not the question here

Again, I was referring to first trimester embryonic remains, not fetal remains. And while it would be possible to find evidence that someone ordered an abortion drug online, there would be no way to prove that she actually took the drug to end her early pregnancy.

It's possible to prove. Very unlikely but they're right. It is worth pointing out it's still illegal and OP should go through a doctor.

Thanks for pointing that out. I was only thinking about importing the pills.

  • I ordered from women on web a few months ago and had no issues receiving the package at my apartment

Thank you so much , you give me hope 😭😭😭

  • Best bet is to get the pill. It's not crazy expensive and cheaper than continuing on with a pregnancy that you both don't want, and safer than any alternatives.

  • Hi, I recently just ordered the pills from women on web and was delivered to me without problems. I had doubts before too, of it being illegal but found a Japanese blog about it about a Japanese ordering it and see if it actually gets delivered and it did. Hope this helps, I live in Nagoya.

  • An at home abortion is illegal in Japan under Article 212 of the Penal Code and punishable by up to a year of imprisonment so please please practice digital security if you’re going this route. I couldn’t find any examples of an actual prosecution in recent years but I would strongly advise going the legal route

Medical abortion is available legally up to 9 weeks and costs around 100k

This is unconscionably expensive but only you can decide what risks made worth for you

Just adding on because you mentioned 9 weeks. This is for the pill. Surgical options are available after but not all clinics will do it.

I had abnormal scans with my last pregnancy and did an amnio (thankfully came back clean) and by the time we got it back we would have had under a week to decide to terminate (if there was a severe anomaly). IIRC the cost for a surgical medical abortion was like 1,000,000 yen not covered under insurance (even if the baby’s condition is incompatible with life)

Yes I should have made that clear. Surgical options are available up to 21 weeks and 6 days

Didn't japan just pass legislation last month that opens the door for OTC morning after pills? So maybe this was revised?

The morning after pill is not abortion. It is emergency contraception.

    thanks for the clarification.

The pills are unlikely to make it through the customs unfortunately. OP is probably going to be in trouble about this I am afraid.

I ordered the same pills from the same site (Women on Web) a few months ago and my package arrived to my apartment fine

same; my friend also same recently.

The pills are not themselves illegal so I think it’s possible they make it through customs

It would be taking them yourself without a medical consultation that would be the crime

Which is of course absolutely nuts but the contraception and abortion laws in Japan are bizarre and intended to funnel money to OBGYNs

Stealth edit: the MHLW specifically bans personal imports of mifepristone/misoprostol. That said it’s not an illegal drug so they might get seized but I highly doubt there would be criminal ramifications so let’s not cause unnecessary panic

Women on Web gives you advice based on the country where you live/will be receiving the medication. And if there were a lot of issues getting the medications through to Japan, I’m sure they’d stop sending them here. Of course there’s never a guarantee they will make it. My worry was what if I had a complication from the medication that warranted going to a hospital (could I get in trouble for taking it? Would they know I took it?) but they give you advice on that as well. It’s a really great organization.

I mean isn't the crime really obtaining these without medical consultation/prescription, which is fhe case for a lot of drugs? Just don't want OP to land herself in some deep shit buy buying pills online without the proper procedure..

  • Women on web, and use a VPN.

  • I believe one should not take pills without undergoing ultra sonogram to rule out ectopic pregnancy. Proper consultations with doctor will be helpful.

The abortion pill has zero effect (positive or negative) on an ectopic pregnancy. It’s only effective for pregnancies that are in the uterus. Taking the pill if you have an ectopic pregnancy will do nothing, so the pill itself will not hurt you, however an ectopic pregnancy needs to be diagnosed and will itself cause major problems. If you have an ectopic pregnancy and you take the pills, you will remain pregnant.

  • Be so careful with ectopics. Pill + ectopic can be quite disastrous.

Thank you , I have a doctor appointment to check the pregnancy. I wish others who have the same situation would also keep this in mind!!

  • A friend of mine ordered pills from the same company. They got held up in customs and my friend was contacted. They asked her what the purpose of the pills were (there were two.) When taken separately, these pills are used to treat other conditions and they are not illegal in Japan. When taken together that’s when legal waters are muddy. She told customs she was taking the pills for those other conditions and received them. I’m not suggesting you do the same, I’m just telling you what happened. Also note that this was almost a decade ago, and I don’t know if laws have changed regarding these exact pills. If you do get contacted by customs and don’t want to go this route, I believe you can tell them you don’t want the medicine after all and customs will destroy the pills with no consequences on you.

What’s the other condition? Asking for my fellow sisters. Acronyms are fine if you don’t want to implicate yourself or just a link.

To be honest, I don’t remember enough to share. I know one of them can treat ulcers but I don’t know which one, and I have no clue about the other. I’m not even sure what the names of the medications are.

  • I remember very long ago looking this up for someone who thought they needed to go through the Darknet or something (can't fathom how they figured me as a source of such knowledge other than being a creepy hunched over loner who was always clad in Ween/Shpongle/Beatles shirts and hats...)...

But anyway, it was just a matter of hitting up some organization from a civilized part of the world like those others have commented and waiting a few days. I think they donated some nominal amount. Being way past menopause myself I can't say for certain, but I'd reckon worst case Ontario customs MIGHT toss it, but not put you into some insane prison where you can't even keep a diary or pass the time with music/books, instead being forced to march around in circles all day (when there's no forced labor to be done).

If it's not a >30-day supply and the substance is only unavailable in Japan as opposed to something on their Nixonian DARE-Program brainwashed schedule of "drugs drugs", it's probably kosher... I could import proton-pump inhibitor antacids and (last time I checked) even like phenibut as long as it was "less that 30 days' worth"... And it takes a while to get pregnant 30 times, even if you're trying, know'm'sayin'?

But I wouldn't be confident in that unless I searched the actual name of the molecule in question in Japanese first. I typed that to distract myself from my own mortality and the voices of regret mainly and don't claim to know... about what I'm talking in particular.

  • Life is so precious. There are accidental parents but no accidental children. Not everyone gets a second chance to have kids later 😢

  • Can the men who aren’t in the medical field or have any knowledge just STFU on this thread? I’m reading the most asinine, dumbass ill-informed replies to OP’s simple question.

It's very simple. What op wants to do is illegal. If they want to do it legally they need to go through a doctor and pay the going rates.

That's it really. I'm sure you're familiar with the medical reasons for why its illegal so I won't go over those.

  • You seem young. Try to get it done the proper way even if it’s expensive. Try to be safer if you’re not ready for a kid or abstain.

  • Or might want to consider counselling to discuss the other option.

  • Dude just go to a clinic

OP is quite literally not a dude.

OK? Dudette? Whatever. Don't some people just call everyone dude anyway. But yeah, sounds so dangerous. Had a family friend use a pill and died bec of complications after. She was a doctor herself too.

Oh my gosh. An abortion pill? That’s so incredibly sad :(

Yeah. I think she took them everytime she got pregnant but one time her body prolly wasnt in the best condition leading to her dying painfully and slowly. Her then partner was so devastated (he himself knew about the abortion pills too and both were on the same page for being child free) that he never had a proper relationship even after. Hes now in his late 50s and still single.

No need to spread fear-mongering stories about abortion on Reddit. No one says the morning after pill or the abortion pill shall be used as an alternative for birth control, but having one abortion throughout your life will likely not kill you.

True. Just telling a story from one of the people I used to know. But whatever OP chooses to do, its her body. Hopefully she'll be safe and happy with whatever.

If she was taking abortion pills multiple times as a replacement for contraception then I have far leas sympathy for her…

She took contraceptives and stuff but there would be times where life finds a way and she would take the abortion pills.

  • [deleted]

    They mean an abortion pill.

  • All I know is if you’re pregnant and want to stay pregnant, don’t drink black cohosh tea in large quantities. It causes uterine bleeding and can even cause a miscarriage.

I would never use such a method for abortion because plan B is easy to obtain where I live and it could be very risky. Hope that helps.

This is a terrible idea and is super dangerous.

To add on to something I would never do. Dont eat a ton of papaya seeds, and according to some Jamaican friends a hot guiness with pepper.
