My wife and I are looking at getting Rakuten credit cards but we were trying to find out if we could get separate cards connected to our individual bank accounts under the same Rakuten account so we could both build up points as a household.

I understand there's a family card but from what I understand that would still lead to 2 cards connected to a single bank account. Would the process in this case be to apply for 2 separate credit cards for 2 separate bank accounts under one Rakuten account?

Thanks for any help!

  • It’s individual to the account, but I recommend you get two cards anyway because credit limits are separate then giving you access to more available credit.

Rakuten Card (the free version) only goes up to a ¥1 million limit. It goes up higher if you have an annual fee card, but if your wife also gets the free version your maximum limit will then be up to ¥2 million instead.

Also, personal experience is that Rakuten Card is one of those issuers that doesn’t start you off with a high limit, but will quickly raise it without you asking. I went from ¥500,000 > ¥700,000 > ¥1,000,000 in about a year on my Rakuten Card.

Yeah that makes sense! Been putting it off for a couple years since it's never really been as necessary but now that we're planning to be here a little longer, we might as well.

Just to chip in, my limit is ¥2 million and I've only ever had the free version. (Had the card since 2010 though; they may have reduced it since but grandfathered in my 200man limit)

My experience was similar - started at 100,000, then bam-bam-bam 50man, 100man, 200man without asking. Found it fairly bemusing since my monthly spend on it was never much.

similar here, I'm at 1.5m, have the card since 2020.

  • I have an account with two cards (one for personal, one that I use for business) and they both get paid from different sources, but all of the points go into a common pool.

Interesting, yeah that's kinda what I would like too but one of the cards and bank account would be under a different person.

  • Unfortunately not possible. Points are almost always attached to the person, not the household. Bic and Yodobashi has been cracking down on point card sharing recently, I've been warned not to use my wife's point card before (they can see the name come up on the register)

Darn, I guess the play is to get a family card if we wanted to build points together. Thanks for the information!
