Matcha green tea’s global popularity has surged, leading to shortages and price increases. While Japan’s matcha exports have reached record highs, the laborious production process makes rapid production increases challenging.

  • I just got back from eating dinner across this fancy matcha shop in nyc and there was such a long line in this brick ass weather. Crazy

  • We have it in Brazil, if I am not mistaken it is produced locally too....

On your future post, you mentioned you’ve never had Japanese matcha and your description is basically about Brazilian Yerba mate which is not the same as Japanese matcha

I like both Yerba mate and matcha. Difference is that, Yerba mate has a higher caffeine content. Both are bitter.

People can’t handle a lot of caffeine so that’s one reason matcha has gained in popularity; it has the “right” amount of caffeine for some people

It is being made in other countries though I read that only South Korea comes close to the same quality.

It's eventually going to be a market dominated by China.

I can't give an opinion on that as I never had Japanese or South Korean matcha, we also drink it differently, Chimarrão (hot) and Tererê (cold)

If you're thinking of Yerba Mate, that's a different plant.

  • It's the latest trend, probably spiked by those pretty photos and videos on social media. Like all trends, it will soon pass for the next hype. It would be a huge mistake to overinvest in production today with the expectation of increasing demand in the future.

There was a similar craze for Dalgona coffee (anyone still remember those?) a few years back and look where it is now.

    Matcha has some advantages.
    - Japan actually has matcha shortage despite previous consumption. You used to have matcha based sweets all over the convenience stores, now it is basically down to one half-sized latte. So there is still a lot of room to grow by recouping the selling points it has lost.
    - Boom in the US could easily move to Europe, Middle-east and so on to keep going
    - It is being promoted by brands like Perfect Ted and basically can basically be made into a late, other drink, traditional, sweets (both restaurant and high volume), cream, bubble tea, ...
    - I find that it helps with ADHD so similar to coffee helping people get up in the morning, I feel like people can become daily users.

I believe matcha demand will level off but remain higher than Japan can supply. The largest importers like the US should take advantage of the demand and increase domestic operations both in scale and quality.

It’s green and colorful and tasty. Perfect for instagram

  • It’s instagram friendly from the making to the cool green color and it Japanese which seems to be the cool country now. Old enough to remember the cupcake trend, cold brew, bubble tea and other trends. This too shall pass.

  • TLDR: "Damn gaijin are buying too much of our matcha, now obaasans can't afford it! There go those foreigners again ruining Japan!"

  • PIN number.

It's unfortunate that you're being down voted for pointing out the redundancy of "matcha green tea".

Lol, thank you for noticing! :)
