Japan’s new leader Takaichi says she wants to meet North Korea’s Kim Jong Un
  • 31 points Gmellotron_mkii

I love how little people know anything about anything on this sub as nobody ever reads the article

    23 points magkruppe

Abe, who was assassinated in 2022, had signaled a willingness to meet Kim Jong Un without conditions to improve ties between their countries; several years later, then-leader Fumio Kishida also conveyed his intention to meet the North Korean leader.

Each time, a meeting failed to materialize. Now Takaichi, who took office after winning an election in October, is inheriting a decades-old problem that stumped her predecessors – and hoping to be the one to solve it.

tl;dr - Takaichi is just doing what Abe and other PMs have done with a focus on returning abductees from the 1980s

Sounds like the one thing the Japanese and Korean right disagree on

Her impression of Trump is getting better and better

    parent
    23 points Tun710

Did you even read the article? This was a statement in a rally demanding the return of Japanese citizens who were abducted by North Korea. Trump wants to be buddies with Kim. It’s different.

What? Since when? Only case I know about jp abduction jp is when a lot of jp move to nk to seek opportunities but got stuck there instead, right?

    parent root
    8 points hetasu

Have heard about the Megumi Yokota case?... there are several cases like that.

    parent root
    0 points SnooCrickets5396

I do hear it. But I actually wonder if they are modern cases in 21st century ?

    parent root
    6 points hetasu

I don't think there are any. Thing is, this issue is brought up by the families of the abductees every time a new Prime Minister is elected, so it's normal and somewhat expected for a PM to take a stance like the one Takaichi is taking right now.

    parent root
    2 points SnooCrickets5396

So I guess that what she doing is just to make her self more popular? Like how she say her country will defend Taiwan , something about with jp and Russia (I forgot what it about) and now with North Korea. This is the only news I hear about her at the time

Why? Does China want asia to be in conflict or actually reduce tensions, hostilities and everyone to get on?

Quick, someone call up Dennis Rodman!

    parent
    1 points Gloomy-Sample9470

Ohtani will step up... The Japanese rodman.

    parent root
    2 points proanti

Ohtani is definitely not like Dennis Rodman

Dennis Rodman is not the GOAT in basketball (he’s one of the best players no doubt but not GOAT status) and he lived a crazy lifestyle that constantly attracted the tabloids during his prime

Ohtani is already considered by most to be the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) in baseball and his lifestyle is far from crazy when compared to Rodman

I mean, meeting with other leaders is a good step, so can’t fault her for wanting to do that. Meeting only with people you agree with isn’t that useful. Not sure it’s going to accomplish her stated goal with the abduction issue, but at least open communications is something. It’s a great precedent for the future if nothing else.

Why are people so negative about this though? How else are you going to deal with a country with nuclear weapons and a dictator? The only thing you could do is talk to them and try to negotiate diplomatically

Rolling out the families as props for Trump's visit was textbook propaganda. The Japanese lap that shit up, while the rest of us know that Trump won't do anything that doesn't benefit him in some way. It's the second time he's met those families and told them that he'll help, having also done so during his first term.

Whether Takaichi can actually make any progress, I don't know. But like with the foreigner stuff, simply talking about these things will drum up support and distract from the biggest issues affecting citizens today. It's win-win for her.

    1 points StormOfFatRichards

Abducted Japanese is a real issue for Japanese

    parent root
    3 points Quixote0630

Of course it is. When did I say that it isn't a real issue?

That doesn't mean that it can't be used as a convenient distraction by politicians when tackling current issues would mean shining a light on their own incompetence and corruption.

People care about foreigners because it's presented by politicians and the media as a more pressing threat than the fact that they've been getting poorer for decades.

I stand by the fact that rolling out the families for Trump for a second time was fucking gross. He did fuck all last time. They were nothing more than props to get the Japanese onboard with Takaichi's sucking up to Trump and her "iron lady" image. It's politics, pure and simple.

    parent root
    0 points StormOfFatRichards

That has nothing to do with wanting to talk to the leader of a foreign country in order to resolve an act of interstate aggression

Sick of seeing this woman in the news constantly. She is nothing but a shit disturber. She already got China's back up ...now she's looking to stir shit up with NK?

This issue been going on for decades but now she shows up and thinks she can suddenly solve it? Is she just wanting her own Nobel peace prize to show to papa Trump?
