Hi Everyone, I am in the process of buying a second hand two bed apartment. There is already a fridge, oven, hob and extractor fan in the kitchen. There is no washing machine however. There is a large press in the main bedroom but there is nothing else in either bedroom. The floors are in good nick and so is the boiler. What do you think it would cost to furnish the apartment?

Thank in advance.

  • Go have a look at IKEA for a sofa, a bed frame, a mattress and a kitchen table and chairs. For the washing machine you could get one for a few hundred. Thats realistically all you "need" to get started. That'd be a good "baseline" cost.

Then go check out some second hand shops and adverts/FB market place and you might get things cheaper.

I like spending as little as possible until you've lived in the apartment for a while and have a better idea how you want to use and decorate the space long term.

The rest is up to you. You can buy a two seater sofa for 500e or 1500e or 4000e depending on what you go for.

That makes a lot of sense. Thanks for your help!

I would argue that for a washing machine it is worth investing in a good washer/dryer.

  • It's a little difficult to say, because it was depends on the standard you expect. I spent about €20k when I moved into mine and have spent about another €10k since then, but includes all sorts of lovely pieces I've soured from around the world, and some art too. I was waiting so long to buy that'd I'd already picked out all my furniture and was buying the bits I wanted as they went on sale over a two year period.

If you just want to get going and are happy with good enough for now, second hand and ikea is a great place to start. €5k will go a long way.

Ah you put your heart into the place so fair play to you! I'm fairly minimal and basic in my taste so I don't really think I'd be too fussed with buying fancy tables, couches etc.

That's it, and honestly, I don't feel one bit of guilt for spending that money because it brings me such pleasure every day when I return home.

I had some luck with Jysk too, although it can be hit and miss, so make sure you give everything a good once over in the shop to make sure it's stable / comfortable before you make the plunge. I had my eye on some lovely looking dining chairs there that were at least half cheaper than anywhere else for the same style, but the padding was awful in them and you could feel the metal frame in your back.

Have a look at the charity shops around you too, some specialise in furniture too.

I also really like Sklum and Kave Home, both online.

  • How long is a piece of string.

  • No idea , but try adverts , some really good deals on there

    Good idea, cheers

Try some of the free websites and marketplaces. We got most of our stuff free. We got a 2nd hand super king oak bed for a steal also. All in for a 3 bed house for less than 2k.

  • Depends on how much you want to spend, what you're willing to settle for, and whether you have any connections that could provide some free or cheap furniture. Hell, I've fully furnished a two-bedroom apartment for less than a grand in total in the past, with a lot of random free hand-me-down furniture from friends and family and a few cheap bits from used furniture shops. I have absolutely zero sense of style and my only criteria for furniture is basically "fits where I want to put it and keeps my stuff and/or my arse off the floor", though, so YMMV. If you want stuff that's brand new or matching or in style or whatnot, that'll of course be more expensive.

As others have suggested, starting off with some motley collection of cheap/free used stuff and maybe some Ikea bits is probably the way to go; it'll let you get a feel for the place and how you really want to set it up for the long-term. That'll also let you start replacing things with some higher-quality or newer items room by room or even piece by piece over time as your budget allows, so you don't have to go blow five figures on furniture in one fell swoop.

  • How long Is a piece of string really , depends what you want and where you want to get it from , I've moved into a 2 bed apartment this last year and I spent easily 10k I would say , couch , TV , media wall , large kitchen press , large bathroom press , 2 new bathroom mirror cabenits , kitchen table with chairs , then there is the smaller stuff you don't think of , blinds / curtains , poles etc

I already had a 70% of a bedroom set but I did buy myself a nice new mattress.

I could of done it for less and I could have done it for a lot more too

  • Look up done deal or Facebook if you are trying to furnish on a budget

  • Get into the space and see how you use it and what you need and want to prioritise. I'd suggest a bed, sofa and washing machine dryer.

Cost depends on how high end you want to go.

Just get things as you can afford them or have a slush fund to dip into.

  • I recommend autumn blu for bed, we have gotten a few ottoman beds from them, great price, pillow top mattresses are super comfy! Million times better than ikea mattresses iv had. My first house i had barely any money left for furniture etc I got a couch in dfs and put it on finance. Also got my floors / appliances on finance through humm all 0% interest. It just helped get me over the hump and once I was settled back in I paid them off pretty quick!

  • Look up advets plenty of second hand furniture and some are free

  • Get cheap/free stuff on Adverts first which gives you time to decide what you really want to invest in
