Hard to believe such a simple thing endured in societies mind for so many years. But also maybe just reminds of a less devisive and better time.... Apart from the whole recession thing.... that was shite
I remember wincing when I saw that. The poor lad must have gotten some clatter. Something similar happened to me years ago, but I hit the back of my head and got a concussion for my troubles.
I knew a lad who slipped on the ice but “caught” himself rather than going down. That caused a couple upper vertebrae fractures. In a collar for 2-3 months.
He’s not into people knowing it was him, although he very much could have used it to his advantage at the time considering what he was doing at the time.
Maybe I'm imagining it but didn't a friend of his make a mock (satire) YouTube video where they analyze the fall and its lasting effect on him? IIRC he was in the video himself and was fully on board with the joke.
Maybe I'm misremembering and/or it was just some bloke pretending to to be his friend for the craic of the YT video!
I was watching the news live when this happened and I remember calling my husband to come and see it. We must have rewatched it 20 times, he was so confident walking jauntily along as if he'd never seen ice before
Yes! The camera was on a tripod or fixed human, waiting there because people were slipping. They were trying to get footage for the news of what was really happening on the street like they were in a balkan civil war. Technically textbook on site journalism though, can't fault the professionalism.
It’s actually 16 years.
Both big freezes were in 2010, one in January then the other 11 months later in November/December.
It felt like Ireland had been moved to Canada at the time.
I remember Bernard and Keith on LMFM at the time trying to get him on the phone “Answer your phone NAME”, they had the name right, a friend of mine was going out with him at the time, he’s Irish.
Really? Well, fair play to him, he could have made a lot of money from it if he wanted. I presumed from the walk he must never have seen any ice before, thought he was completely naive 😃
Proud to share my birthday with this iconic moment in Irish history and will never forget being a kid watching it on the news and cracking up completely 😌😌
Has he never seen ice before? Very confident march down the shiniest, slippiest looking bit he could find.
Edge of the footpath or the road is his friend there!
I heard that guy was the founder of Dublin city. He was the guy who scared away all the dragons that were here before then. Only to die in that horrible slipping accident. RIP
yes, near there and bridewell garda station, you can see the wall he wacks his head off is still there if you go on google maps search st. michans church
The worst part of it is that he probably got zero cash for this. This lad is more famous than half the eejits getting serious cash for their image in this country
I don't remember this snow? Was this the same year when it was snowing on Xmas eve(2010) so we got like more snow like 2 weeks later? It makes it more weird because it had been properly cold for ages by that point so surely he knew you don't just walk around like that 😂 Although looking at it, only a few weeks earlier it was properly snowy, maybe this looked relatively walkable in comparison and his own hubris got the better of him?
Remember this being the opening clip for Reeling in the Years when the 2010-2019 series started and cracking up laughing. What a way to start the decade
Amazing to see different versions of this in the world, in Portland OR usa during every snow mention in the winter we highlight “it’s the perfect texture for running” from 12 years ago.
I never understood what was meant to be funny about this. He could have easily cracked his head on the ground and died just like that. People die or seriously injure themselves from slipping/falling (especially on ice) all the time. Also, RTE knew exactly what they were doing and were clearly waiting for someone to slip so they could film it. More to the point, why the fuck wasn't the footpath salted to begin with?
I'm guessing you're not a fan of slapstick humour? This makes me laugh every year when it's posted. Yer man wasn't seriously injured, so at worst it's a reminder to be careful on the ice 🧊
Gonna get seriously downvoted for this, but I never saw the humour in this clip.
Thousands upon thousands of people laughing at what could have resulted in a serious head injury.
They knew. Surely they knew. They would have seen the spot, not ever seeing sunlight, lovely bitta black ice on the pavement and thought "we'll set it up here for an hour now and surely capture someone."
It's time An Post immortalized him as a stamp.

How?
2011
January 8, 2010
Apparently there's a plaque on the wall where he slipped lol
It's long gone unfortunately
At least the plaque to Fr Pat Noise persists.
It slipped off the wall...
Aw, sad.
Should have been a bronze and soapstone pavement tile anyways.
Polished to a mirror finish and oiled daily
Sponsored by Coors light lol
He did a YouTube video of it, pretty funny actually. Laugh with funny, not at.
YouTube parody That was a skit, very funny though but not really him.
Specifically this screen grab.
I need that stamp!
I remember that moment like it was yesterday. I really hope this happens!
Lmao, love this idea!
Brilliant idea!
VAR have checked and said it was a dive. They'd even take the fun out of this.
The very epitome of “go tobann…”
I remember wincing when I saw that. The poor lad must have gotten some clatter. Something similar happened to me years ago, but I hit the back of my head and got a concussion for my troubles.
Did he get found in the end at all?
I knew a lad who slipped on the ice but “caught” himself rather than going down. That caused a couple upper vertebrae fractures. In a collar for 2-3 months.
Did he grab something like a rail and then the momentum of the wall cuased him to swing into the rail/pole/wall?
I didn’t see it, but I don’t think so from the way he described it. I imagine it was similar to a whiplash injury.
Yes, and I wouldn’t be unhappy that it was him either.
A friend was going out with him at the time, won’t name him as I’d be doxing (?) won’t name the bar he runs either.
I hope he knows that at the very least, he has unified the country with everyone who's seen it going "oooooooooh, fuck".
I call bullshit. This is such a big meme over the years, someone would have outed him if they knew.
I half-believe the story it was a foreign student who's since left Ireland
I know who it is and the publican angle is absolutely correct
Same walk and everything.
It’s not… he’s a barrister.. not a barman.
No no, he's a re-publican.
The schlippery mickey. It was named the greasy prick but some thought that too bald.
Bullshit. You say he was Irish but the cameraman who recorded the clip says he was "either Korean or Chinese".
Pure lies!! What ethnicity is he so? You can say that at least,
Does he run it or own it?
He’s not into people knowing it was him, although he very much could have used it to his advantage at the time considering what he was doing at the time.
Ok but still
The cameraman already said the person was Korean or Chinese.
[deleted]
[deleted]
Not that difficult to connect the dots lol
Although I also heard it wasn't him
It happend to me three days ago. Depending on his age and fitness, he'd have been wrecked for a good while.
Yes. Look for his YouTube videos
Edit: Someone has posted that video below.
16 years and this is the first time I noticed the cameraman saying “oh shit” after he falls
My God, I never noticed that before!
I was watching the news live when this happened and I remember calling my husband to come and see it. We must have rewatched it 20 times, he was so confident walking jauntily along as if he'd never seen ice before
He certainly got a good look at it this time.
Very true, that's why I was convinced he was from overseas! The rest of us walking around like penguins 😃
Same. It was hilarious.
Didn't someone put a plaque there to commemorate it.
Where exactly is it?
Think Coors or someone did a promotion thing with it and it got taken down
Here’s a Google maps link. plaque is gone though
Church Street near St Michan's.
Cheers ⚪
Yes, I think so!
Coors put an Ad there posing as a plaque
It was so funny that they just didn't mention that part of the clip, like the news became You've Been Framed for a couple of seconds!
Yes! The camera was on a tripod or fixed human, waiting there because people were slipping. They were trying to get footage for the news of what was really happening on the street like they were in a balkan civil war. Technically textbook on site journalism though, can't fault the professionalism.
To this day I'm convinced this was the crews producer walking through frame intending to slip a little for B roll
for the love of fudge can someone please drop a link to a copy of this video 😆
EDIT: found it lmao https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3vVDUuC0yw
EDIT 2: it was actually 16 years ago
Apologies as pointed out by some it's actually 16 years not 15
Don't forget this followup!
https://youtu.be/Ukp1dwISkT4?si=Ids0hMRJojyYbmaj
Hahaha....I was going to post that. Absolute belter 😆😆😆
The fucking salt packets! I knew what it was before I clicked but had to see it again.
There it is. Good man
Whoa, feels like so much longer ago tbh!
Yeah 15 isn’t as bad as I thought it would be
It’s actually 16 years. Both big freezes were in 2010, one in January then the other 11 months later in November/December. It felt like Ireland had been moved to Canada at the time.
You just took a year off me you monster
Fuck!
This man did more to raise the spirits of the country during the recession then anyone.
Can share the image without the video : https://youtu.be/oT9z87GNL_g
You the real mvp
The assured brisk walk in the lead up gets me everytime
I wonder is the person even aware of this clip?
Very much so and doesn’t like it at all.
Go on.....
Really, I thought he was never identified, rumoured then to be from overseas? Which made sense to me with the over confident walk 😀
I remember Bernard and Keith on LMFM at the time trying to get him on the phone “Answer your phone NAME”, they had the name right, a friend of mine was going out with him at the time, he’s Irish.
That also not true, you clearly have no idea who this is
Really? Well, fair play to him, he could have made a lot of money from it if he wanted. I presumed from the walk he must never have seen any ice before, thought he was completely naive 😃
A lot money 😂
Oh does he not!! Does he feel like it's just haunting him forever? Aw fuck I feel terrible now for enjoying it so much
I don’t know him, my friend was going out with him at the time, I wouldn’t be sorry you enjoy it at all.
Did he work for the news crew or a genuine civilian?
He shouldn't feel bad though.
He's not at fault for living in a society so shite they can't even keep the pavements safe for a bit of ice.
Just glad he didn't smash his head in.
Janey. He seemed like a fierce grounded chap. 15 years upright changes a man. Living in his head. All cerebral and sh1t...
Well that’s just not true, because he shared it today with a joke
Proud to share my birthday with this iconic moment in Irish history and will never forget being a kid watching it on the news and cracking up completely 😌😌
Lá breithe Shona duit
Go raibh maith agat!
I still wince when I see this. I also laugh. Can’t help it!
I wonder how he feels about being such an iconic figure in Irish culture for simply falling over.
That winter was mighty craic. This one went viral in Limerick
https://youtu.be/YfpmWdyxTx0?si=ZQ8qalX3aa4A-5z4
Thank you for this!!! I had wiped that from memory!!! They were some legends recording the lot of them!!!
16 years ago today
Has he never seen ice before? Very confident march down the shiniest, slippiest looking bit he could find. Edge of the footpath or the road is his friend there!
Time flies. So does that fella on the ice.
How long since "sure you wouldn't be long getting frostbit"?
That was 2015!!
https://youtu.be/PLMrHRuhxO4?si=lKu5HV5DWu78idn4
He was also in the news a few years ago after swimming too far out to an island and having to be rescued!!!
It's one of the most iconic moments of this century
Has anyone found this guy? Would love to hear from him
Should be properly commemorated with a public holiday. Not all heroes wear capes
Still a legend, and the perfect example of what epicaricacy means!
I heard that guy was the founder of Dublin city. He was the guy who scared away all the dragons that were here before then. Only to die in that horrible slipping accident. RIP
Dearmad Riamh
Never forget
This still makes me laugh. Every time
Give this man the statue he deserves!
Where exactly is this spot? Near the courts?
yes, near there and bridewell garda station, you can see the wall he wacks his head off is still there if you go on google maps search st. michans church
Ahh I know exactly where you mean now. Around to the right is the pit of shame.
Coors Light marketing team stuck a plaque on the wall commemorating the exact spot: https://www.irishpost.com/entertainment/plaque-appeared-dublin-honour-10-years-since-infamous-man-slips-ice-176734
Just thinking the same.
Is it at the side of Phoenix Park looking down to Kilmainham?
Kind of similar 1:14
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=UPTt6MgsOt8
Has he ever been identified?
Every year dude 😝😝
Have to
Oh without question
WE NEED A FOLLOW UP? What happened like was he okay? Is he doing well? Will he do it again like come onnnn..
The worst part of it is that he probably got zero cash for this. This lad is more famous than half the eejits getting serious cash for their image in this country
The man the myth the legend

And we never found who he was.
He's a hero up there with Collins.
We did! I won’t name him as I’d be accused of doxing (pretty sure I’m using that right, and I won’t identify the bar he runs in Dublin either.
My friend was going out with him at the time, he was a bit of a git, hated people bringing it up.
He’s a barristor. Not a barman…
More bullshit from you he is not a barman never was
I always find it weird that nobody ever managed to find out who this was.
RIP
Its 16 no? This was in 2010
It's mad how some people call him a legend and others call him a wanker. It's a real dichotomy.
FIFTEEN YEARS???
This was the first news I watched after moving here to look after my parents, it's etched In my mind 😆 🤣
Still makes me lol .. poor fecker
Remember this being the opening clip for Reeling in the Years when the 2010-2019 series started and cracking up laughing. What a way to start the decade
damn what happened to him
Inspired this very funny video
Always beside us in time
I slipped on the ice that day an no one cares :(
If he ever comes forward he'd make a mint from the merchandise alone.
neverforget
more like 16
i heard he was a librarian a very quiet shy kind of person who was embarrassed with the attention
Imagine if there was a substance that could be put on the pavement to clear the ice…..
never knew this happened on my birthday. what a present.
where is he now?
Meanwhile in my head: F-f-f-f-f-freestyler, rock the microphone
Happy anniversary, for all who celebrate.
Amazing to see different versions of this in the world, in Portland OR usa during every snow mention in the winter we highlight “it’s the perfect texture for running” from 12 years ago.
He'll never be forgotten
Great memories, less so for yer man.
Never forget, there was a fever snakey *$&# of a camera man who waited there for the shot.
15 years... and I'm still lauhing like crazy when I see this guy. Legend.
I never understood what was meant to be funny about this. He could have easily cracked his head on the ground and died just like that. Also, RTE knew exactly what they were doing and were clearly waiting for someone to slip so they could film it. More to the point, why the fuck wasn't the footpath salted to begin with?
was that the year the country ran out of salt?
Yep, the clip after the fall shows a JCB removing the compacted snow from the footpath
Sounds like something a person who slipped on ice 16 years ago would say…
I'm guessing you're not a fan of slapstick humour? This makes me laugh every year when it's posted. Yer man wasn't seriously injured, so at worst it's a reminder to be careful on the ice 🧊
I think Irish people can be split into to those who find this funny and those who don’t.
I’m 💯with the latter group.
Laughing at other’s misfortune has always been for a very specific & common type of sneery horrible Irish person.
Gonna get seriously downvoted for this, but I never saw the humour in this clip. Thousands upon thousands of people laughing at what could have resulted in a serious head injury.
Yeah but he was grand.
I suppose we all just assumed RTE didnt crop out the emergency services carting him off to Beaumont.
Taking him to Beaumont was worse than the fall.
an unnecessary journey would you think?
Agreed. Fucking celebrating the rotten state of a society that can't even keep pavements safe.
How did the camera man know to record? At best he was waiting for an accident , at worst he planned it
I’d assume they were just filming some filler showing people going about their business in the snowy weather and got lucky.
They knew. Surely they knew. They would have seen the spot, not ever seeing sunlight, lovely bitta black ice on the pavement and thought "we'll set it up here for an hour now and surely capture someone."
the last time we were a properly country
lol aren’t we mad lol down with this sort of immersion thing lol mad to be Irish 🇮🇪
