Don’t normally listen to it but had R1 on in the car and they were discussing the Minneapolis shooting. This fella comes on and starts shouting down the other callers and the presenter. A female caller who was an eye witness it seems was talking and any time she spoke over him he called it “womansplaining”. He then says that RTE don’t allow for balanced views even though they agreed to have him on. What was that all about? I was only half listening beforehand.
It was very funny when a lad who had similar beliefs to him came on and he called him stupid too. Sounded like he'd happily argue with himself.

Aw man. Full disclosure, I'm a fully fledged lover of radio - genuinely think there are a million and one things that are great about it. And I specifically love RTE R1.
But I usually turn it down once live line comes on, it's not my thing and I find it at times disturbing. But I heard your man and I just couldn't help but listen, I was glued. I would thoroughly recommend listening.
I think the jarring thing about it was that I've read similar views online, like word for word same victim lines, but it was so perculiar hearing someone saying it, in an Irish accent, on Irish radio. But the verbal version of it sounded exactly how I thought it would, so that was cool!

If you think this is a recent development or that we'd need to follow the Brits on it, its pretty clear you've not been paying attention to Irish media or politics for the past twenty years.
We had literal decades where the overwhelming majority of Irish people supported marriage equality and abortion rights, but during that whole time, whenever someone was allowed on the telly or radio to talk about how gay people and women deserved basic civil rights, it was mandatory that they also platform some fucking wingnut on from a far-right think tank to spout nonsense and outright lies to "provide balance".
It was fucking ridiculous and it was constant.
This was primarily a result of a Supreme Court case Patricia McKenna formerly of the Green Party, brought against the state requiring equal funding to be provided to both sides of any constitutional amendment, back in 1995. RTE as public broadcaster have to give equal time to both sides of any constitutional amendment.
This was happening long before there were constitutional amendments for either issue on the cards.
Considering the outcome of five abortion referendum(s). There was a definite split of opinion on abortion and not some "overwhelming majority".

Dunno about Liveline, but a friend used to get me to ring into the call-in show he worked on and impersonate a nutter. RedFM in Limerick back in the day. Not saying that's necessarily what's happening here (and I refuse to listen to the clip, I hear enough from these people), but it's certainly a thing.
I’ve worked as a researcher in both radio programmes on Newstalk and on rte and that’s crazy what your friend was getting you to do. Neither myself or previous colleagues have gotten our friends to call in and try stir up some controversy.
