Looking at houses at the moment with my approval in principal. Looking some of the interior design choices has me laughing at how bloody tacky they look. Grey and pink? Stripey wall paper? Bathroom tiles that are a deep shade of blood red? Was chatting with friends at lunch who secretly do the same. Now with all that said I should not judge lest I be judged but it's hilarious some of the interiors...😆

  • i went to look at a house that was for sale in our area, it was uh. Cheaper than most.

The chap had taken cladding that usually goes on the outside and done the front room and kitchen in this faux brick cladding.

The carpets from the landing into each bedroom was a cadburies purple with fluff to match, the kitchen was firetruck red with this bright green counter top

Instead of normal interior lighting, he just put temu style LED strips everywhere

Turns out he was off his rocker 99% of the time he did any renovations so he just went with the flow

I actually put brick slips on one wall of our living room and behind the bed in the master, might not be to everyone's tastes but we like it.

    JUDGE ME

Not sure about behind the bed, but my wife wants it on the fireplace. Where did you get it and was it easy to.Apply?

Ordered from likestone.ie and we had a tiler do it, we were happy enough with how it turned out but I'm sure it wouldn't be to everyone's taste, my wife wanted an NYC loft kind of vibe.

I design commercial interiors and love a brick slip wall! Clients love them and they always get positive comments. Nice if you can add some warm wall lights to them as well.

Op might be talking about a slate cladding or just an ugly brick perhaps.

    Agreed - that’s awful!!!!

Fireplace could be tricky with slips because you have corners to deal with and they don’t have the depth to create a genuine brick corner detail if you know what I mean. If you get a skilled contractor they could do it if they’re used to working with them but something to flag with them before they start of you want it to look authentic.

Was his name Del boy by any chance?

  • I love those 70s/80s era coloured bathroom fixtures - blue, pink, green, peach. They're fab! Nowadays everyone has the same boring white toilet and bath, boo.

I've seen some pink bathrooms on the home decorating subs and I think they're absolutely gorgeous. Honestly I prefer questionable but colourful decorating to monotone beige sadness, I love seeing some personality even if the result isn't to my taste.

Bit of avocado/blush porcelain is timeless. Corner bath with gold taps? 🤩

I draw the line at gold taps. I'm not Hugh Hefner :-)

    Not with that attitude.

My granny had a bright yellow toilet, sink and bath with blue carpet in her bathroom... it was a choice😅

Was she from Tipp or Roscommon or what :-)

She was a Wexford woman! maybe they were out of purple carpet that day😂

I haven’t judged a single choice so far but carpet in the bathroom? Disgusting, from a hygiene perspective rather than simply aesthetics.

It was a thing a fwe decades ago, whoever the fuck thought that up must have brain damaged from all the lead.

I have a dream of a 1980s Miami themed bathroom, and pastel fixtures would be ideal. I want fake palm trees and flamingoes in there too. I love tackiness so much.

My grandparents just tossed out their full avocado bathroom set despite my please to stick it on done deal saying they’d make a good bit of money. Alas they were unconvinced

I dream of a pastel bathroom. Some people have no imagination

Stop, I’m so disappointed in them, they usually love hearing their 70’s ideas are cool again. They denied someone or up to three people a dream bathroom.

Manufacturers will never make them again at reasonable prices. It’s cheaper and safer to pump out plain white sanitary ware.

    The beige ones are shite...

Oh the obsession with fucking magnolia

    So sick of magnolia.

Mac's Salvage is your friend, you can pick up all sorts of mad home decor stuff off them

I once tripped my absolute nut in my mates nanny's house that had a full pink bathroom. Note his grandparents had passed away at the time and this was 1 of few sessions taking advantage of the empty house.

Better to use color on wall, towels, rug etc

Easier to change if you get sick of it, alright!

  • Better than the ones that use 'virtual staging'.

I live in Australia, they've been at that for years over here, when i was buying 2-3 years ago every second house had a pool table in the living room.

Photoshopped grass, smooth walls, random no source lighting... place looks incredible, then you turn up and its shabby and falling apart.

It's the first thing I think now, when I see AI photos on daft - "what are you guys so desperate to hide?"

Saw an AI cat photo on donedeal the other day. It was followed by a real one of a disgruntled looking blur in a cage.

But they also take actual professional photos and select the best to publish.

You often see places here with 60+ photos and they're all so dark, not even level, agent in reflections with an iPhone, etc. Then no staging whatever with dirty dishes and clothing out and general clutter.

I love it when product photos for some 60 cent piece of tat on AliExpress are infinitely higher quality than photos for a literal €400k+ Irish property

I just caught that was a thing last night .AI generated... absolute.pox

Some of them are so obvious. And not even in proportion. They look like bad collages

  • Yeah there's some seriously tacky taste out there.

  • Jokes on you, they own a house

Or the bank might own it!

No, they own it and are selling it at a significant profit to you. It’s such a sellers market that they don’t even have to do anything about the crap interior design to sell it.

Haha this is the brutal truth

Not all first time buyers are the same generic applicant who scraped a 10% deposit together. For example OP could have sold various assets to build up a very decent deposit and are only needing a 50 or 60% LTV, and could be financially in a far better position than the person from whom they are buying the house. Just some food for thought. For example a lot of people returning to Ireland after living abroad could have significant deposits and only need mortgage for 5 or 10 years to bridge the gap also.

Ah will you stop! I’m having a little dig at the OP, not writing an ESRI report on the housing market.

But just being serious for a second: the OP could be the EuroMillions winner from last year, and it doesn’t change the fact that the seller is making a great profit off him, and doesn’t have to do anything to redecorate the house to sell it.

Ah it's all in jest my friend. I'm merely challenging the status quo and providing an alternative outlook.

  • Ah stop. When we were viewing houses it is crazy how different peoples tastes are. Viewed a house with a carpeted bathroom. Wasn't even old!

Some people, especially elderly, use carpet in bathroom as a fall protection safeguard. Softer landing and far less slippery.

Sure ye dont want to be freezing your feet on cold tiles now, dya. Bitta carpet there for some 'homeliness'

And sure the piss stains add a certain character

    Imagine the smell...

As long as you piss in the toilet it’s fine 😂😂

Pissing in the toilet is one thing but all bathrooms are bound to get moisture and no one wants to be stepping on a soggy carpet 🤢

I find carpet nasty even in the bedroom, but having it in the bathroom is next level 🤢

  • Interior design is hard, for what it's worth. Most don't spend money on a professional designer, and sometimes people make bold choices and it just doesn't work out. Sometimes there is a consistent design which people just drift away from for practical reasons.

I bought my first place 6 years ago, and we just basically filled the place with stuff we wanted and liked. We ended up changing and throwing half the things over time, and I've started following interior design YouTube to get some basic ideas. But I still wish I had the time and money to start from scratch.

  • I love to see people decorating the house to their own taste. It annoys me when people live in a house with a view to selling it- it’s like they never get to actually enjoy it. If blood red tiles is your thing and it makes you happy knock yourself out. We work hard enough for the privilege of owning a house, might as well decorate it as “tacky” as we want.

  • Interior fashion changes over the years, people can't afford to constantly change the interior to keep up with the latest trend and what is in fashion now

You can buy a house now, do it up and in a few years time it will be seen as "bloody tacky"

Bathroom especially are a huge cost to renovate for people, so a tile can stay on them for 20+ years

If you are buying a house do you think you will have enough money to renovate every few years and stay trendy?

I'll be strapped when I buy so it's magnolia paint and second half furniture off done deal...

Please not magnolia! Just go Matt White everywhere

You leave Matt White out of this!

You can buy a house now, do it up and in a few years time it will be seen as "bloody tacky"

Nah, there's definitely a difference between

this was fashionable once but now looks old and dated

    and

this was never fashionable, it always looked tacky/these people are insane.

I think the OP is much more about the second one.

Wait until grey dates even more and boxy media walls and veiney quartz work tops and grey windows and giant bathroom tiles. It will all date badly.

Interior fashion changes over the years, people can't afford to constantly change the interior to keep up with the latest trend and what is in fashion now

You can buy a house now, do it up and in a few years time it will be seen as "bloody tacky"

I don't think this is true at all. The majority of the things that are considered tacky are extremely garish or cheap looking even when they are new. Think of the people that a year or two ago were painting everything grey and had only grey furniture. This was immediately obvious this wasn't going to age well.

Yeah, grey is the new magnolia, especially in English gaffs, sometimes you see a place being advertised for example in the Daily Mail (it's free, I pay for the independent and the examiner), and then you go have a look on the property sites and then you start looking at comparable properties to see how they compare to one another and you have gone down another rabbit hole.

The properties are normally ones that were bought by someone doing it up to sell at a profit (all I can think when looking at them is the cheap stuff used and the various 'shortcuts' ala Homes under the Hammer), the whole place is grey including the carpets and if they are furnished - yes is the grey furniture with sparkly mirrors blerughhhhhhh 🤢🤮

The issue is people themselves : stop with trends and then the inferior is timeless.

  • They always get the last laugh as they have a house 😁

    Or the bank 😆

    Better than the parents 😀

  • We should have an Irish one for daft/myhome although people's feelings would be so hurt haha

    There's a long running thread on boards.ie

Happy to say my place never featured when I was selling! 🤣

    Ireland is too small!

  • I find it so interesting. Interpreting other people's choices for the house and rooms. I sometimes check out 1mil+ houses to see people that have more money than sense for interior design choices. I always find it interesting to see a religious house, statues of Mary or Jesus in most rooms and stuff like that. Found one before that had a small grotto in the back.

My mom had Mary in half shell in garden. Very common back in the day

There is a house in Dublin, not far from Black Horse, where there is a plaster round on the exterior with Mother Theresa in it.

Every time I go to Dublin, I make sure to have a look to see if it's still there, I think the house may belong to folks that are more on the elderly side, but yeah I always have a peek to see if it's still there.

  • Oooh, blood red tiles. That's going on my pinterest.

  • Honestly I love some of the tacky design choices. At least they have character. Nothing worse than all grey or beige.

  • Maybe just send some photos of your gaff and we seat and have laughs

    'seat and have laughs'...

  • Keep an eye on those extra ugly houses, you often get better value for the  (provided structure, location, etc etc is all fine). Tonnes of potential buyers cannot get out of a renters mentality, and completely disregard houses they would otherwise like because of things like the carpet or wall paper being ugly.

It's kind of baffling, but use it to your benefit - and best of luck on the hunt! 😊

Thank you for that, already using it to my advantage !!

We disregarded a house that needed “too much work”. Ended up doing just as much to the place we bought.

  • Yes indeed, some people have no personality whatsoever.

  • If you're shopping then you might find a good opportunity for a bit of value - especially if you are doing the repair yourself.

Have e mailed a few that need cosmetic changes

  • The interiors of houses will never cease to fasinate me. I still regret not taking a photo when we viewed a house that had a piano in the bathroom. It was like a weird art installation 🤣

  • I saw a place that looked like it had gotten the thinnest slap job after years of neglect, presented as turnkey without a stick of furniture! Everything just painted white, tacky faux marble flooring, cheap kitchen that will immediately be pulled out and replaced. 4 bed 1 bath which is weird and one of the smaller bedrooms had these huge built in wardrobes that left no space for a bed, looks like it was used as a dressing room for the master bed. The overall layout was disorienting. It just got more bizarre with that unexplainable "off" feeling. They had put twin ovens in the kitchen presumably trying to appeal to those keen on cooking but they were built in Bekos and they weren't even matching, one was silver and one was white.

Then there was the unusual wording of the ad, specifically mentioning recent work on the roof and drains that screams "I put my hand in my pocket for this so I'm mentioning it" and makes you wonder why they needed doing (roof maintenance in a normal enough thing but why would the drains on a house built in the 80s need to be relaid?) and the roof job looks fairly shoddy too. It was in Killiney so was up for 700k, then they dropped it to 600k (and changed agents) and it's gone sale agreed at that but I wouldn't be surprised if there are more serious issues, it might show up on the register as going for under 550 to a cash buyer. I've seen houses with one or two dodgy spots but that place just felt like a money pit throughout. Considering it's been on the market almost a year in this housing market my instincts must have been right.

  • I better not photograph the room with the stripey wall paper when I’m selling ;-)

  • I think the newer ones are just as awful sometimes:

Grey everything, Buddha statue, "Home" sign on the wall, fully concreted or astroturfed garden etc.

  • Most people would be just happy to have a home all things considered

I'll take a shed in the middle of the M50 at this point...

  • Don't forget that a lot of houses have been subject to Landlord DIY and home decor.

  • If I see a beautiful period home that I could only dream of owning I remind myself that it probably looks like this inside and I feel better.

  • I just came across one with a huge black and white framed photo of a roll of cash on the ground in a street - hanging in their downstairs jacks, wtf is that about

    That's ultimate in tackiness

  • I love the celtic tiger builds with the split staircase, bright blue carpet and red leather sofas. 🤣🤣🤣 it's like they came as a kit! Always mad tiles in the kitchen and bathrooms too and a pool room/bar/cinema room. Good times!!

  • None of these are automatically bad

Of course not. To be honest I'm just a judgemental prick with no taste if I'm honest!

I'm sure I'd agree with you on some of them if I saw pictures though

  • Is your taste universally better?

Probably not which is why I can laugh ..what about yours?

I'm an architect and worked on projects published on the AD. I still don't judge people on their homes - a home should be whatever you want it to be, not what you think other people might like. I'm proud of my home and id say a lot of people (brass and stripy wallpapery people as you say) will come into my house and probably hate it 😂 but that's totally cool

I like this response! It is your own print on it!

  • Keep in mind, when selling a property, you generally want your interior design to be as generic as possible to get less folks not bidding based on disagreeing with the design and a lack of imagination

  • I'm lucky enough to have a house. I still do this because I love snooping.

I think it's a very Irish thing, even though I know I (we) am now in our forever home (our 2nd house) that you still have to have a peek and see what's on the market, especially houses around you and how much they sold for, or just to see the layout and the decor.

Yes! Seeing the houses around us is always really interesting

  • One thing I heavily judge about Irish houses is the big bulky black leather couches. I really don’t get it, they are not comfy, they are ugly and terrible when it’s cold or hot!

  • I always assume it's a landlord selling their first house, bought in the 80s, bought a new house, rented the old one for A while and are now selling it on

  • Ever seen straight up golliwog dolls on display on daft listings? Cos I have.

  • r/spottedonrightmove is great for this. It's UK based mostly but I do frequent it as there are some very questionable design choices out there.

  • Just bought our house and it had a spray painted mural in the kitchen, complete glass sinks in both bathrooms and mint green doorframes on all the doors🫣 We’re in the process of getting rid of them all🤣

    Fuckin hell!!

It’s been painful covering up their decor choices to say the least lol

  • We like to spot the swingers. Some of those larger houses are definitely used for special parties.

Saw a pair of absolutely shite red curtains with roses earlier. That's them 100% id say 😆

  • We moved in to our new house 3 years ago and my friend group still share houses off daft in whatsapp.

  • I used to be in home decorating Facebook groups and itt was amazing how many people have extremely tacky taste and get hyped for it

  • I hate all the grey blandness

  • millennial grey is such a curse. So sterile and lifeless

  • House price: 800k Living room has a 21" CRT TV from 1999

Those CRTs go for good money these days to retro gamers - make sure you negotiate it as part of the deal

That’s just called old money, inherited house.

  • I like to look on daft as soon as I see a house for sale in my estate. Some are decorated really nicely and some are next level tacky with themed rooms and OTT on the crushed grey velvet. I am not sure if I prefer that or houses that have not been decorated since early 00's and it is pine on pine, on pine!

I do like looking at different houses on the same estate, its so interesting how different they can be!

I have no vision at all when it comes to decorating, so I always think its amazing what some people come up with, compared to a 'basic' one that looks like its only been painted since it was built.

We have a neighbour that by his own admission has zone nothing other than paint (even this is debatable) since the house was built in the early 80s. It was wild seeing the original kitchen and bathroom.

The pine kills me. Pine floors, doors, frames, skirting. All I can see is how much repainting I'd have to do

Problem is no matter what people do, everything becomes dated

I can relate, we have painted every inch of pine or replaced it with something more contemporary. The flooring was good quality but ugly so we had it varnished a dark colour and covered a lot with carpet. Then there were the terracotta tiles, all over the house and the green bathroom tiles... We have a fireplace but cannot light the fire, it is too nice to rip out and will leave that to the next owners if (hopefully when) we sell.

  • My parents were house hunting last year and viewed a house that had an attic conversion but the only thing in the conversion was a fully plumbed boxed in shower in the middle of the red carpeted room. There wasn't even towels or a radiator. The room itself you could only stand up fully in the middle, so you essentially had to crawl/ hunch over to open the shower door... feckin bizarre

Also a lot of people seem to have a strange obsession with pine ceilings and walls...

  • The prospect of getting a rental filled with floral curtains and uncomfortable couches and divans is a bit bleak sometimes.

You accurately described what I have at the moment!

    Ye be judged!

  • Our sitting room is a weird shape and I watch out for people selling houses in our estate to see what the hell they did with this weird shape

Honestly I think we did the very best... But we spent literally hours trying to figure it out, partner does architectural visualization and he made a 3D render of our sitting room so we could look at different couch configurations and walk around the room. We didn't get as far as a 3D headset but I'm telling you we nearly did

  • The customer is always right in matters of taste

  • My favourite are the ones where they're done out like a show home and someone clearly fancied themselves a designer. Crocheted Giraffe heads on the wall and clear plastic dining room chairs kind of vibes.

Its not even the decor, its the thought of someone walking around directing all this, just fancying the pants off themself 😂

  • Listen I'll never say no to a bit of colour in the house but what is with people with the ugliest pub bathroom tiles in the dining area/kitchen?

I remember it being a big problem in student accommodation as well!!

  • The problem isn't jyst dated decor, lack of taste or no modernisation, it's the price being asked for houses -often in great areas- that need at least €150k spent on insulation, wiring, windows, kitchens and bathrooms etc.

This is what put me off buying the place I'm renting. It needs complete insulation over haul

  • Well there's a hobby I'd never thought of. Thanks very much!

  • [deleted]

Is that a +1 for carpet in a bathroom!

Yes from me. I love a pissy carpet. Reminds me of my youth in the boozer.

    Laughing *in privacy and anonymity

  • The sellers are probably laughing at the fools viewing and buying their overpriced rental property as they escape before the collapse in the market.
