For 3d surfaces, use white surfaces (or paint it in white), use black strips (or paint) for the edges. Here's one that's local to my place. They didn't put anything black at the center table tho.
Also, because everything is painted in white, it can get kind of dirty looking. The bottoms of the table legs, chair legs, etc end up pretty scuffed in real life.
They missed too many edges (along the chair, tables, brick) that it breaks the illusion for me. Why do it at all if they weren’t going to commit fully?
Literally just paint everything white and use a black marker on every edge, hand drawn floorboards too. Labour intensive but fairly straightforward I think
I've been there before, it basically only looks good at a few specific angles that you see in photos. It's impossible to make it look as intended at every angle. Pretty disappointing experience tbh
I used to live around the corner from there, its not worth it for a trip unless youre planning on being in Lakeview already. It is a lovely neighborhood and theres plenty to do but dont go out of your way for mid ass donuts and chicken (also pricy).
A fully white room with adequate lighting would make shadows apparent but the dark lines help hide the contrast. I see shadows but the camera used for filming might not pick them up well enough. If you've ever been in a recently built new construction home with a lot of natural light the shadows aren't as apparent as you'd think because it reflects so much bounce light on the space.
White floors are also uncommon so unless they're kept perfectly clean it'll show eventually and is part of the illusion.
I have no idea if it's faked but if it was just recently done the effect would still work but I don't think it'd be easy to upkeep
I believe it’s real, but only because I work in theater & have done more productions of “A Charlie Brown Christmas” than I care to recount. The set was always in that full color, yet sketchy style & our scenic artist achieved the look by literally flat painting it, doing a drop shadow in a slightly darker color, & then going over everything with Sharpie marker. All the edges, corners, & detail bits got sketched in by hand with giant Sharpie markers. It was trippy, but such a fun process to watch the show come to life.
Imagine if you had zero clue and happened to have eaten some mushrooms or lsd and went into here randomly. And you’re too high to bring it up bc you think, omg I’m so high I’ve cartooned! So you don’t tell your friends but the next day you make a mental note to gold star your plug bc that was some really good shit.
As someone who's brain struggles with depth perception at the best of times, i can guarantee that the floor and nearby furniture would become visible with blood and vomit.
that is so trippy.
this is DEFINITELY interesting af.
What I am looking at
How did they do this?

They should have painted the mortar as well, but it's pretty great
I think what trips us out is the lack of shadows everywhere. How does that work, are the lights just insanely bright?
I think this only looks good in still photographs. When you are there in person most of it breaks down.
Also, because everything is painted in white, it can get kind of dirty looking. The bottoms of the table legs, chair legs, etc end up pretty scuffed in real life.
And also, after working there for a full shift, my eyeballs would be vibrating.
But hey, all that remains will be the picture, and thats all that matters now /s
Was in the 2d restaurant in Tokyo and can say it does not break down, at least to me the whole experience was even more trippy.
They missed too many edges (along the chair, tables, brick) that it breaks the illusion for me. Why do it at all if they weren’t going to commit fully?
Yeah, this looks like they cheaped out or tried to do it themselves.
Who was gonna do it?
What am I looking at? How did they do it?
I mean it seems pretty straightforward how they did it: some black and white paint, some artistic talent, and a lot of cleaning.
you know as well as I do, my friend.
imagine actually tripping here... I've gone black and white vision on both shrooms and acid 😅😅
yeah that would definitely be an experience
I'm imagining fleeing out the door as fast as I can
Everything is just white, they've just painted black borders on everything
Paint.
What is this question.
Trippy yes. Can’t decide if it would a good trip or not, since you’d probably already feel like you were.
yeah it definitely would be very weird. I tried imagining walking into that and it would be awesome but yet so awkward.
I little bit of curated visuals is nice but this might be sensory overload. We should go. For research purposes.
what's messing me up so much is that there are no shadows
And this is more than just a stationary effect, there's a bunch of videos on their google listing with people walking around.
Oh I believe it's real 100%, I just can't wrap my head around how they did it.
what do you mean? everything is white and then just outline it well.
yeah my brain was overcomplicating it
But where are the natural shadows under the tabled and chairs?
That's a good question but if they are using indirect lighting everywhere that might be able to prevent any shadows.
I think it's just straightforward black outlines and lines on white, it's our eyes and mind that does the rest.
Literally just paint everything white and use a black marker on every edge, hand drawn floorboards too. Labour intensive but fairly straightforward I think
Must be a nightmare to keep it clean looking. Everything that spills will really stand out
I've been there before, it basically only looks good at a few specific angles that you see in photos. It's impossible to make it look as intended at every angle. Pretty disappointing experience tbh
There's a similar 2D cafe in Tokyo. It's not really a trick of the camera either it's really trippy to go into for a minute.
If there's a Meow Wolf near you, I highly recommend going
https://i.redd.it/yjeqo23zig8g1.gif
Chris! Where have you been?
I DON’T KNOW.
The best part lol..
What's wild is that episode came out when the song was 20 years.old... And now that episode of Family Guy is 20 years old.
I don't like you anymore
greatest show ever.
Aha
Immediately thought of that
TAAAAAAKE MEEEE UUUUP
Those... are not the words
He confused but he got the spirit
Nono, wait. He has the heart, but he doesn't have the spirit.
I'LLLLL BEEEE GOOOOOONE ADITAYADOOOOOOO
TAAAAAAKE MEEEE OUUUUUT
I say, dontcha know?
TO THE BALLLLL GAMEEEEE
"I'm gunna kick some ass with my own pipe wrench"
I can't listen to that song without hearing "This guy's gonna get an ass full of pipe wrench!"
first thing I CRTL + F lol.
There’s a place like this in Chicago. They sell mochi doughnuts and fried chicken. Do not go there high.
But I go everywhere high
What’s it called? Gonna be in Chicago next month.
2d restaurant
Thanks broheim!
I used to live around the corner from there, its not worth it for a trip unless youre planning on being in Lakeview already. It is a lovely neighborhood and theres plenty to do but dont go out of your way for mid ass donuts and chicken (also pricy).
There’s been a cafe in south korea for awhile with this interior as well
My first thought was I want to trip balls in that place
...hang on. Can I get the fried chicken ON a mochi doughnut? And whereabouts in Chicago is this fabled land? Can I go there high?
Place in orlando too, same thing even has a michelin nod.
I was gonna say, this reminds me of 2d
I went here! The aesthetic 10/10 but the food was only decent. Not the tastiest place to eat in Chicago for sure.
Would have been more interesting (af) seeing one person pulling out one of those chairs
https://preview.redd.it/3utanqrnsh8g1.jpeg?width=3468&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2838a9054297e8e50d41c9448c4f45309e597e65
This is the best Pic I got while I was over there
Oh, the floor looks normal here
They gave up with the tree it seems
A little bit less impressive in real life but the effect is there
So wtf kind of tricks did they pull to make OP's video? Seems more than just cleaning the tables and finding the perfect angle.
I think it's also lighting. It's so bright that you hardly see any shadows, making everything look 2 dimensional
Gotta be lighting, also having people in the chairs would have helped take you out of the illusion
yes, they don't appear to cast shadows on the floor.

I have no idea if it's faked but if it was just recently done the effect would still work but I don't think it'd be easy to upkeep
Lighting from lots of different angles would help too
It looks like Borderlands.
I feel like the workers there must experience a touch of insanity every single day.
Probably would suck to work here lmao
I suspect there’s a spare bucket of white paint in the back, for stains that don’t wash off easily.
And black industrial-strength marker to restore the lines.
Went to a place that did there and it was filthy
Looking at this all day long would give me a huge headache.
Yeah it's either puking or seizures from the dazzle effect.
I need to see someone touch a chair here because they do not look real whatsoever
Everything's all good until this guy shows up:

Dining here would feel like being part of the comic book plot.
I wonder if the bathroom also looks like that
This place seems kind of sketchy
aha
isn’t there a place similar to this in korea?
There’s more than one. I’ve been to a café like this in Korea
Yes I just commented that myself lol I saw it in a variety show once years ago. Not a new thing
I have seen a few of these cafes in Korea towns in Japan. I thought it was originally a Korean thing!
Several, Korea had the first restaurant with this concept
Take on me…TAKE ME OOOONNNNNNNN…
I'm going to bring a class of Kindergartners with boxes of crayons and let'em have a go.
Can they stay between the lines?
Then you call it art and sell for millions of dollars.
Repeat
Take on meeeee
Went to the one in Japan and it was 10/10 recommend. Amazing. Great food and drinks too.
If I went in there high I think I just might end up killing myself
Man
There's one in Chicago too
https://www.2d-restaurant.com/
Straight out of an Ah Ha video! 😂
It's got Borderlands/Telltale Games vibes.

Trippy indeed
Imagine if you had zero clue and happened to have eaten some mushrooms or lsd and went into here randomly. And you’re too high to bring it up bc you think, omg I’m so high I’ve cartooned! So you don’t tell your friends but the next day you make a mental note to gold star your plug bc that was some really good shit.
I do not like it
Aha
Take on me! Take me home’n
It’s not as realistic in person. Looks great on camera though
thanks, i hate it
Hate it
To be fair in Japanese, shiro means white and kuro means black so that makes sense 😅
Take on me...
A-ha
Taaaaake Oooon Meeeeeeeeee!
Honestly, no, f that irl. Cool to look at the internet, but prob would make me puke.
I love it.
I hate it.
I love it.
I hate it.
I LOVE it??
I HATE it?!
AAHHHHH I don't know how I feel about this!!! 🤣
Am I the only one that needs some color?
A ha!
This would bother me.
I couldn’t eat there. I’d be freaking out.
Oh brother.
Reminds me of the a-ha video!
I’ve been here. It was okay
I can't hardly look at this
That hurts my brain
A Ha!
Hate it
I hate it. I just do.
I don't want to dine there. Feels like the eye fatigue would be considerable after a few minutes.
Ah ha!
Ah ha, where is this again⁉️😂
not new though. have been to Mafalda exhibition which uses same artefacts, awesome anyway
Hows the food though?
As someone who's brain struggles with depth perception at the best of times, i can guarantee that the floor and nearby furniture would become visible with blood and vomit.
It gives me "a-ha Take On Me" song vibes 100% ✓
A-ha!
Ah ha!
A-ha!
I wonder how this is for people with monocular vision, more or less difficult to navigate?
A-ha
Taking some acid and going in there would be wild
Reminds me of the outfit from. kill Bill
Steamboat Willie recommended this restaurant
That's fucking up my brain bad.
Trippy af
I remember a home makeover gameshow, in the UK a good few years ago, had an artist with this style as one of the contestants.
Let's just say that the recipients of the makeover were not in a good place by the end of the episode!
this would put me into psychosis
My depth perception would be totally off in that place
Similar one in Orlando.
Imagine eating some mushrooms, then getting lost and having to enter this place to ask for directions but then the shrooms kicks in as you enter.
Chicago has one of these too. Its Vietnamese cuisine with French decor.
I think they’re copying off 2D Restaurant in Chicago.
https://preview.redd.it/fjgqjglz9k8g1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2560be7f8ec4d2b701873612527d1f9291f9e714
Looks like the Take on Me mv
Trippy
Been there, it's really bright in there so the place lacks warmth. It only looks good on camera.
Anyone know this style of art? I’m looking for a phone case with this style. Also, if you know any lmk!
I googled cartoon outline phone case and found this. Apologies if links aren’t allowed in the sub
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dimensional-Cartoon-Mobile-Silicone-Protective-white/dp/B0CMW5L92N
白 shiro is white, 黒 kuro is black in Japanese
Finally, a good post.
Confuso
They did a good job. I wonder what it’s like hanging out in there.
IG!!!!! ASSEMBLE!!!
I’d lose my fucking mind working here
That’s trippy
Reminds me of this one cafe I saw when visiting Virginia Beach. They kinda did the same thing
Take on chi bitches
okami vibes
There’s also a speakeasy in the back through a secret door.
Super interesting af. I don't want to be inside that room lol.
I would be so disoriented. I'd love it, but damn.
I agree that this is interesting
Gimme some markers and I'm good
