I think it might for a hawk? Although I've never seen one go for a dog or cat, or heard of one attacking either (aside from crazy fur-baby types on nextdoor claiming that one "was watching" their pet.

I highly doubt that would do shit for coyotes though....problem is that chihuahas actively try to fuck with them. That dog wouldn't last long in my neighborhood if left out at night, even in that 'armor'.

    parent root
    44 points Automatoboto

Hawk here, they dont work, you definitely dont want to get one for your small dog especially if you live in the greater phoenix area.

What if an innocent hawk gets injured accidentally when they are minding their own business definitely not trying to eat dogs.

    parent root
    4 points driving26inorovalley

    …wait a dang minute

    parent root
    28 points BloweringReservoir

I don't know about a hawk, but I've seen a pelican take a chihuahua. The lady let her dog off the leash in the park, and a pelican swooped down and took her. It then sat on top of the electricity pole swallowing the dog. The owner was freaking out next to me, but there was nothing anyone could do. We have pelicans, hawks, kites and eagles around us. We also have had several generations of cats, and I've never let them outside unattended when they're very young.

    parent root
    16 points SmolSwitchyKitty

Ooof, yeah. Pelicans will try to gullet anything that they think they can. RIP doggo. 😬

    parent root
    15 points MrGreenChile

How long does it have to sit in the pelicans stomach before it dies? That’s a horrible death.

    parent root

    parent root
    14 points These_Yzer_Lyon

I haven't heard of hawks being a problem but owls will absolutely attack cats and small dogs.

    parent root
    6 points CitrusBelt

Yeah large owls are pretty crazy, no doubt!

On the hawks, I was just speaking to my location/experience too. No reason to think they couldn't if they were desperate enough; just I've never seen or heard of it. Where I am there's more than enough squirrels, rabbits, snakes, and roadkill (not to mention poorly kept backyard chickens!) to go around....seems unlikely that they'd bother with a cat or anything but the very tiniest of dogs.

or an owl. small dog owners should really be aware of the possibility if they let their pups out at night.

    parent
    4 points getittogethersirius

Hawks and owls terrify me 😭 my dog weighs 4 pounds soaking wet, she would make a good snack. I never let her out in the backyard unless I'm standing next to her, and when I get my own place the first thing I'm doing is building a fully enclosed catio, or in this case a Chihuatio

Also! For anyone else interested this thread, apparently hawks hate shiny things, so a company makes dog vests out of shiny fabric called The Hawk Star. I've been meaning to get one.

It's silly but a dog in my neighborhood got mauled by a coyote earlier this month. And we live in an urban area in a reasonably big city. Adjacent to a big "greenbelt" park which is probably the reason for the coyotes. Still that little pup got his shit rocked.

    parent root
  • 17 points NPC261939

I doubt that would stop a determined coyote.

    parent
    14 points ms_panelopi

No, but it will stop a bird of prey. My neighbors small dog was lifted away by a hawk. Coyotes aren’t going to mess with a dog with people around.

    parent root
    8 points a_tothe_zed

What? Coyotes are known to attack small dogs around people all the time. They also attack people. Google ‘coyote Stanley Park’. This is happening in Downtown Vancouver.

    parent root
    3 points Ok_Tumbleweed_7677

Hawks won't try to mess with a dog if people are around either typically, if they'll attempt it. Might I ask, was the dog merely lifted and then dropped? If so, that's probably because the dog was too heavy for the hawk to actually carry.

    parent root
    2 points CeeUNTy

My friend's mother had her poodle taken by a coyote while she was walking it on a leash.

    parent root
    4 points ScyllaOfTheDepths

It's not supposed to stop it, it's supposed to buy enough time for the owner to stop it.

    parent root
    3 points NPC261939

Does the owner also wear one?

    parent root
    4 points ScyllaOfTheDepths

Presumably the owner is larger and stronger than a coyote to the point they don't really need armor, but if not then I guess it's not a terrible idea and I surely wouldn't stop someone from enjoying a little Mad Max cosplay.

    parent root
    9 points a_tothe_zed

I was thinking the same thing. Coyotes can kill a porcupine, typically by flipping them over. And this outfit is not as effective as a porcupine quill armour. BS marketing trying to steal peoples money.

    parent root

Have one of those vests for my small dog ( chi/min pin) and while they look stupid actually works. It saved him from my neighbors cross eyed inbred dog dragging him under a fence and trying to chew on him. The vests are made from Kevlar so saved him from most of the damage. Normally they have spikes down the back also but we took them off to put hawk whiskers on like in the picture.

Because you'll end up with a bleeding dog with major puncture wounds on a leash. An eagle can swoop down way faster than you'll be able to pick a dog up. And their talons are larger than an adult human hand.
