Ive never seen this kinda deep swimming behaviour in a dog before

    parent
    247 points StrictLetterhead3452

My grandma used to always tell stories about her dog that would dive down and fetch things. I guess this means she wasn’t making stuff up.

Far fetched if you ask me

I finished a canoe trip and where we were getting out there was a guy throwing rocks into the river and his retriever would jump in and dive down similar to this and then come back with a rock. Never the rock that was thrown but he did always bring one back.

    parent root
    7 points fakenews_thankme

I am your grandpa my dear grand son. She called me dog all the time and made me fetch things from all over the place (some I can't even reveal).

    parent root
    2 points livahd

And sometimes you had to hold your breath for a long time? I think I know her too!

    parent root
    1 points fakenews_thankme

Well, I held it for too long once and now I stay at the bottom of the lake forever. RIP.

    parent root
    1 points KangarooInWaterloo

There is a reason the dog is called golden fetcher

    parent root
    2 points MusicianBudget3960

Im surprised by the reaction, there are hundreds of videos of (at least labs of all colors) deep diving dogs that fetch toys. they are pretty much barking otters.

    parent root
    1 points morganml

Had a lab as a kid that could dive 15ft plus

    parent root
    1 points SeismicRipFart

Yes my cousin’s dog would do this at our lake house instinctively, no one trained or encouraged him to do it. We realized he had been practicing it on his own before we ever noticed him doing it.

    parent root
    1 points BlockOfASeagull

My girlfriend had such a dog! She loved to dive and get stones from the bottom of the river.

    parent root
    9 points onlygramps

I had a friend growing up whose pitbulls would dive into the deep end (10 feet) of their pool to retrieve weighted toys from the bottom. I always found it to be very impressive.

    parent root
    4 points JerkGurk

My dad's pitbull could bring back the same rock you threw, every single time. Could she smell it underwater?

    parent root
    2 points Traditional_Ant8519

Yeah they train dogs to track stuff in water

    parent root
    3 points rugbyj

And that's how we got seals.

    parent root
    2 points Potential-Draft-3932

Hey you reminded me of a guy in Hawaii that used to do this with his dog at the beach park I went to. Never would have believed it was possible but sure enough he would bring back the exact piece of corral

    parent root
    3 points OddButterfly5686

That's where I do all of my best smelling actually

    parent root
    1 points ghidfg

doubt it, sea mammals generally cant smell under water. things like sharks smell by passing water through their nostrils

    parent root
    9 points mushroomvroomvroom

It is an instinctive part of being a retriever. Wounded ducks and geese will dive to escape, and the dogs dive to get them. It is fascinating to watch if you are not a wounded duck.

    parent root
    3 points MoneyMontgomery

Yeah me neither. I figured they just didn't dive. It was amazing to watch though, especially that doggo paddling up spinning around. Amazing.

I had a crackhead aussie/border collie that was crazy for fetch. In her 5th year of life, my now girlfriend, threw a very waterlogged stick into the river and it sunk. Took the dog a few tries, but she became obsessed with "dive fetch". Obsessed to the point that we couldn't drive past a lake or river without her absolutely freaking out, thinking dive fetch was our new life goal, 24/7.

She would also climb trees, scale any fence, and if i wouldnt play fetch with her? Run a mile to the nearest coffee shop with her ball or frisbee to find someone else to play with her. Would get multiple calls a week from the baristas that my dog was bothering guests.

The guests always had smiles, and never any harm done.

    Delilah was a trip.

    parent
    12 points JuanDeChuj

    That's sound amazing

    parent root
    12 points veryfknspicy

My mom adopted our crackhead bordie collie because it was the only dog she had ever seen throw a ball against the wall for itself. It was surreal and she only got smarter, the best dog ever. She also climbed fences and trees. She herded my siblings friends haha

    parent root
    2 points Scary-Comfortable-13

I love crackhead dogs. Especially huskys. They are super wierd and fun. But i would not want one for myself, i would be very overstimulated.

I knew dogs could swim but I didn’t know they could dive as well. What else can they do? Can my dog help me with my taxes?

    parent
    15 points intrepid_mouse1

Just to clarify - not all dogs can swim. I discovered this with my first dog, a Shih Tzu. Luckily, I intervened before goodest girl sank.

    parent root
    4 points Scary-Comfortable-13

Lol i had a shih tzu that would chase ducks into the water and just walk after them until his entire body was under water. If i hadn’t intervened and picked him up every time, he would most likely have drowned. Very cute but not so smart.

    parent root
    3 points Whelp_of_Hurin

One of the first things we'd do with a new dog when I was a kid was put them in the pool and lead them toward the steps, so they fell in while we were away they'd know how to get out on their own. It was never a remarkable event until we got a pug. She sank to the bottom like a rock and walked to the steps.

I had a Lab who was like this. We couldn’t get him near water because you couldn’t keep him out of it. If we were driving with him and crossed a river or got near any body of water that he could see, he’d go crazy. He would bring up rocks and sticks from the bottom of the lake.

I was always afraid he’d drown but he died of natural causes at 16.

    parent root

lighting? dog went in dry, dry fur has a better chance of standing out, dog comes out wet, fur all sticks down and reflects more light? i had a mixed dog with similar fur color, and he'd look the same after baths. not that unusual.

    Goldens have webbed feet.

Modern retrievers, Labrador, Golden, and Flat-Coated Retrievers, all descend from the extinct St. John's Water Dog (or Lesser Newfoundland) from Newfoundland, Canada, a versatile working dog used by fishermen that was brought to England and bred into today's popular breeds.

Well once I had a friend throw it WAY out into a deep river….i had to go get her because she will stay down until she gets that fuckin rock and she was visibly bubbling looking for it at the bottom. I then had to dive BACK down to get the rock because she was losing her mind not being allowed to go get the damn thing.

Yes, Golden Retrievers and many other dogs can swim underwater for short periods, using a natural breath-holding response, especially breeds bred for retrieving like Goldens, who have great natural aptitude, but they can't breathe underwater and need supervision to prevent water inhalation. They hold their breath instinctively as their windpipe closes, but this is only for seconds, so they must come up for air, and it's crucial to watch for signs of fatigue or inhaling water. - Google
