What's with some pinners hydrating by submerging their specimens in water? I mostly see it with beetles but I've seen some people do it with moths and butterflies too. It freaks me out lol how do they not get moldy? What's the benefit? Faster hydration times?

  • it can be a faster rehydration method for beetles, but butterflies and moths dunked in any liquid is most likely going to be an acetone bath to degrease.

  • For a lot of non butterfly specimens it can make the process a lot easier... 1) you don't risk large specimens molding while sitting for multiple days in a chamber

    2) you can get instant feedback and then correct the issue- if a leg isn't opening well just dip it back in etc...

BUT...you risk discoloration on specimens that may leak out oils or have too permeable of exoskeletons
