hey! does anyone have any advice for pinning centipedes? do they need to be gutted and stuffed? i put them in the hydration chamber last night and im just gonna check them periodically
So those ones are specifically Giant Vietnamese Centipedes. I used to have one as a pet, and they are pretty cool to watch. There is also a close relative called the giant red headed centipede that lives in America, primarily Texas and the South West. In Asia, they also have the Chinese red headed centipede.
There's tons of collosal species that get that size or pretty big
My only advice is make sure you have tons of pins for all those legs! If you purchased them already dried then you shouldn’t need to gut them, but you could certainly stuff them if you want a fuller life-like look.
I wanted to post an update on the centipedes! Got them pinned yesterday didn’t quite get as much of a S curve as I wanted but I think they look good for a first time centipede pin
I'm not op but I take a plastic food lunch box that has a lid that you can detach completely and I wet a couple of toilet paper sheets or napkins, then I squeeze all of the water out till they're wet but not dripping and I place them in the box. I spray isopropyl alcohol over the napkins so the box won't form mold and then I put the specimens in. Optional you can also put wet napkins over the specimens but it depends on species
you kinda layer things like a cake! that’s basically what i do except i do a layer of wet paper towels on the bottom -> a piece of styrofoam -> damp paper towels -> the specimens -> another layer of paper towels on top! the beetles and centipedes can be smelly sometimes so i do isopropyl alcohol or lysol usually

Wich country are you from? In germany, centepedes are not that big and it scares me a little even tho I like spiders n shit
Which country are you from? In germany we only have small centepedes (that I know of) and it scares me a little, even tho I like spiders n shit

Thank fuck
Im interested in pinning but haven't started yet. What do you stuff with?
Cotton balls. I pull them apart and stuff them in. I super glue the seem shut
Cool thanks
How do you gut and stuff them?
Scalpel. Tweezers. Empty out. Wash out/rinse with alcohol, stuff with cotton and seal with glue.
Thanks for your information. I've got one as a pet and definitely want to preserve when he's gone (hopefully not for another 8 or 10 years!)
this looks SO COOL. kudos!
Thank you!! This was my pet S. Galapagoensis. Unfortunately I had to leave the country for a bit and she got real bad mycosis while I was gone.

This is how she turned out.
I’m so sorry for your loss, that’s so sad that it happened while you were out of the country :-(
that said, what a beautiful way to commemorate and memorialize her. sending you the best! 🤎
For a second I thought this was my baking subreddit and I was mildly horrified at a centipede beetle cake lol
that’s so funny! on my hydration chamber lid i have sign that says “NOT BROWNIES”

Hi i know this is irrelevant but how do you make a hydration box to hydrate specimen like this? I cant understand the tutorials on Yt
