What is truly insane about this, is you just turned 18, so you're a legal adult, and he admitted in text to a crime. You can use that to your advantage.
Why are they treating you like youre 13? Make sure to tell the people that gave you that money that its being withheld from you. And know that youre not naming them look bad, their actions are making them look bad.
(3rd update) It turns out the police I called was the mayor my dad lives in (he lives in a small town) and the mayor know my dad and step-mom and are friends with them. So fingers cross people.
OP going scorched earth but I think you are right on this one. Financial abuse like this is what causes people to endure other types of abuse. There will definitely be consequences but once you get past that I think you will be better off.
I know things are tight for folks. But a hundred dollars is such a normal thing for an 18 year old to have regardless. Even without a job. Crazy acting like it's some magical thing or astronomical amount.
Just use these screenshots and file a police report for theft. They admit to stealing your money. You're an adult, and it sounds as though you have a bank account. If you want psonline or whatever it's called you can pay yourself. I know I need gamepass for xbox but I thought the thing about ps was not needing a subscription to play online?
Anyway, your dad and stepmother are real pieces of...work. Can relate. Was thrilled to find out mine died 2 years ago. He stole my mom's life insurance from me so uh, yeah, it can get a lot worse.
I always like to say that some people are just overdue for an ass beating. Doesnt mean someone should, doesnt mean its right, but some people really just need one.
They are absolutely in the wrong and I’m sorry. It’s like making your kids change from the clothes you bought them before you return them to the other parent because you think of the clothes as yours instead of as the children’s. That’s the mentality they’re working with.
You’ve got to understand they’re using their feelings to make decisions instead of their brains. They want the money to be spent where and when they are with you so they can enjoy the experience. This is a selfish way to be but they’re so used to getting away with it they don’t think past it.
I don’t know what words to say to help you, but I hope this gives you insight into their flawed thinking
My divorce attorney told me that I didn't have to send anything with my kids when they went to their dad's except a coat if it was cold. He said my ex was responsible for providing for them while they were at his house. Clothes and all. They didn't make them change, but I did always send those clothes back with them on their next visit.
My child’s bio dad doesn’t do the clothes thing, because he doesn’t work. But anything his mom buys for Christmas/birthdays/etc stays there. It drives me nuts because she barely goes over to their house! So it’s not really a gift imo. I always provide everything she needs over there, and let her take whatever toys etc she wants because it’s her stuff. I’ll never understand people like OP’s dad and step mom. It’s not a gift if you can’t have it at your primary residence and I’ll die on that hill.
This was my mother. And my ex husband. Both of them did the clothes thing. It bothered me so much. Like she isn’t going to be able to wear them all when I have her 99% of the time?? People are ridiculous.
My exhusband ‘threatened’ to do this and I laughed at him. I said ‘You really want to be that person? You make fun of those people. You really think of his clothes as YOUR clothes? Well I guess you can do whatever you want, but I’m going to laugh at you every single time’
Insane. It belongs to you. Telling you that you can't take it anywhere makes him think it's his. Paying for a subscription or whatever is bullshit. I guarantee if you tried to pay for that you'd be told to wait or something because the money's probably already spent or he wants to spend it.
You're an adult and your money was taken from you. That's theft. It doesn't matter who did it; you were robbed. The man who did it admitted to it in verifiavble text and his wife backed that information up. Bring it to the police and get your money back. And if you're feeling petty, film it.
No, he does a fantastic job of making himself look bad. Who the FUCK steals birthday money? And from their OWN KID for Pete's sake. Cut ties as soon as you're able and NEVER look back.
Something tells me, they are gonna "buy" a non activated card worth 100 bucks and when you try to activate it, it wont work obviously. Or the cashier didnt give them the receipt with the code on it (idk how the ps store does it)
Whoops, looks like they messed it up in the store haha, you have to go figure that out now, they did their part.
A woman my dad dated for a while used to steal the money out of my piggy bank and use it as her coffee fund. When I questioned why a $20 bill mysteriously vanished from my room she tried to blame it on my best friend at the time.
She just shrugged and said "Well, X slept over last night and now it's gone. I highly doubt that's a coincidence." As if my friend would ever steal from me. 🙄
You're an adult, you have texts from your father and step mother admitting to taking your money, file a police report.
I'm guessing this behaviour isn't uncommon with them so, maybe it's time they faced some real consequences for being such massive aholes.

Yeah charge him with theft
Yes a fresh 18 year old is going to take their parents to court over $100
I've seen it done. Though in that case it was 200 and they had someplace to flee to.
Reddit moment.
Well, OP did exactly that so idk what you’re on about
He took them to court in one day?
Yeah they’re in court right now, I was the audience
Why are they treating you like youre 13? Make sure to tell the people that gave you that money that its being withheld from you. And know that youre not naming them look bad, their actions are making them look bad.
(2nd update): I just made a report to the police and they are going to go down there to go speak to my dad.
(3rd update) It turns out the police I called was the mayor my dad lives in (he lives in a small town) and the mayor know my dad and step-mom and are friends with them. So fingers cross people.
Yikes. Keep a paper trail to protect yourself, just in case. Good luck, wishing you the best.
Well let’s hope that engaging FAFO procedures works to prove the point they can’t be stealing from people without getting their just desserts over it.
(Final update) my dad was never charged for anything and the police didn't call me back. So I guess my dad wins this round...
Bro chose the nuclear option. Giga based. Gl
OP going scorched earth but I think you are right on this one. Financial abuse like this is what causes people to endure other types of abuse. There will definitely be consequences but once you get past that I think you will be better off.
It's sad when a child needs to teach the parent that stealing has consequences.
Keep us updated please. I wanna see these assholes get what they deserve
Tha might backfire but holy shit I’m so proud of you for standing up for yourself like that. Way to go!
Good for you OP!!
Good for you for standing up for yourself! Sorry have have to deal with this.
I know things are tight for folks. But a hundred dollars is such a normal thing for an 18 year old to have regardless. Even without a job. Crazy acting like it's some magical thing or astronomical amount.
Also Insane.
Well, my mom was pissed off and my uncle on my mom's side who hates my dad was so angry he wanted to drive down there beat the living hell out of him.

I'm not up for solving problems with violence but honestly sounds like someone should have whooped your dad a while ago.

He didn’t follow through lol
This is the best response lol. I love it. I just told them they can do that but ya know waste of yalls money🤷🏼♀️
So you can't take YOUR money out of the house?
Insane. It belongs to you. Telling you that you can't take it anywhere makes him think it's his. Paying for a subscription or whatever is bullshit. I guarantee if you tried to pay for that you'd be told to wait or something because the money's probably already spent or he wants to spend it.
Use these text messages and file a police report for theft
Absolutely bizarre behavior

JFC… insane.
Fucking insane and infuriating
Call the cops. Don't ever fuck around with financial abusers, report them ASAP before it gets worse--take it from me.
Just called the police to make a report.
You're an adult. You don't ever have to be around your father and stepmother ever again if you don't want to be around thieves.
You're 18, and the money was a gift. They don't get a say on what house you keep your money at.
Your step mom doesn't get a say at all. I'd remind her that boning your dad doesn't make her an authority in your life.
Bro. Don't go to Reddit. Go to the police. Fuck them. Even if it is your parents. Your whole ass adult and they don't get to steal from you.
I’m sorry…you can’t take the money, YOUR MONEY, out of the house with you??? Tf man I’m so sorry.
No, he does a fantastic job of making himself look bad. Who the FUCK steals birthday money? And from their OWN KID for Pete's sake. Cut ties as soon as you're able and NEVER look back.
They stole your money and are trying to gaslight you with excuses after the fact. They are scum. I'm sorry you have to deal with that.
Call the cops he admitted to doing it
So, steal it back?
You're 18. Never see these people again, you are free :)
Dang this is fucked up

OP decided to get some weed instead. Thats what I would have done.
