  • Anyone here keeping an eye on what Sarah Kinsley is doing? The track “Lonely Touch” she dropped yesterday is such a vibe and the music video is cool too (I think she directed it?). Kind of sounds like Robyn for gen Z mixed with Haim, Japanese Breakfast and New Order. Diving into the catalog but she’s come a long way since The King got big on TikTok!

  • Now that Olivia Dean's blowing up everywhere, I keep hoping the youths will find out about Lianne La Havas so she'll come back and make another album.

She released a single last year, she might be cooking something up

  • Saw These New Puritans on the Quietus list and put it on because I liked Hidden about fifteen years ago. I realize they are not an in-vogue band but damn it's too bad Crooked Wing was missed by most. Pretty cool record, especially on the tracks that are more Steve Reich inspired.

I should revisit that one. I think it's cool that they branched out from post-punk into experimental and art music so quickly (Hidden was already plenty weird), but I haven't gotten super into any of their albums since Hidden.

    • new Snail Mail coming this year, can't wait. Hoping for something more akin to Lindseys debut, 'Valentine' didn't do much for me.
    • new Girl Scout single 'Operator' is okay. Just a goofy song with goofy instrumentation and dirty guitars. Not their best song but it's okay. If anything I'm so stoked for that debut that we're finally getting in March. Way overdue.
    • getting into Yves Tumor for the first time, listening to 'Heaven To A Tortured Mind' and I love it. Love the groove, the production, the vocals, anything about it really. 'Kerosene' is an incredible piece of music. Also, I choose to believe that 'Asteroid Blues' is a Cowboy Bebop reference because that makes this album even more rad than it already is.
    • I continue my 'regretting not having listened to this earlier' tour with 'Berghain' by Rosalía (ft. Yves Tumor and Björk).
    • I have listened to these new Magdalena Bay singles before, but I'm just now starting to really vibe with them, especially 'Second Sleep'. It's a wave of crescendos with criminally groovy interludes in-between. Plus, that guitar at the end, dear god 😮‍💨 The more I listen to it, the more I think that this might even be the best song they've ever done.
    • the Viagra Boys Japanese Deluxe edition of 'viagr aboys' has a handful of extra tracks, that I thought were mostly fine but I can also see why these were left on the cutting room floor. I do like 'Therapy II' a fair bit, but the downtempo ones didn't really click with me.
    • I'll get to the new Dry Cleaning album tomorrow.

    edit: forgot about these lol

    • new Sarah Kinsley single 'Lonely Touch' is so beautiful. I really think Sarah is way underrated on this sub. This isn't even my kind of music, so it's super weird that I'm the only one here doing all the stan-ing. Get a grip, people.
    • new Robyn! Holy shit, how could I forget! 'Sexistential' not really my vibe, like at all lol I find that glitchy shit so yucky. 'Talk to Me' is more my style. Either way, excited for the new album, it's been too long.

I really didn’t like Valentine, and I feel like it didn’t leave much good hope for her stuff moving forward, especially bc I heard the live show wasn’t super strong but I LOVED her debut it was a really formative record for me as a musician and listener. So I’m gonna listen with as open a mind as possible when it drops

Second Sleep was one of my favorite singles of last year, easily.

The VB tracks are "meh". Surprised that people in the fresh thread thought they'd work in the album. Tbh, I think the album would've suffered having these in there.

  • Listening to the hit singer/songwriter Phoebe Bridgers

Still feels very strange that she’s waited a minimum of 6 years to put out a follow up to Punisher. Would be really funny if Fiona Apple follows up from 2020 before her but she’d probably have to wait at least 2-3 more years to do that

if you are getting into phoebe bridges you should check out Morgan Nagler! she co-wrote kyoto and does awesome phoebe esque indie rock singer songwriter stuff

I wouldn’t say I’m exactly getting into Phoebe Bridgers (been a fan since 2019 I think) I haven’t heard of Morgan Nagler so I appreciate the rec!

ofc! shes sick and cowrites a lot, heard about her on the podcast major label debut (also highly recommend ofc) and i really fw her song 'cradle the pain' but everything is good tbh

I mean she did put out two albums as part of two separate bands, it's not like people were starved of Phoebe material haha

Your "facts" do nothing to satiate my hunger for new Phoebe music

    you know what, fair

  • It's new release Friday, for the first time in a long while...so, here we go - my first blurbs of 2026:

Looks like Bionic beat me to the punch...

    ● Sault - Chapter 1. There is nothing not to like about this mix of retro soul, and funky basslines, with a touch of modern R&B flavor. It's quite lovely actually...but it doesn't have the same vibrancy of those first few albums (maybe it was the newness of the project, maybe the secrecy). I like it, but it won't grab the indie world's attention in the same way. Actually, maybe that's better. It is what it is, on it's own terms...and what it is - is pretty great.

    ● Jenny on Holiday - Quicksand Heart. Jenny Hollingworth from Let's Eat Grandma makes a solo album full of dancy grooves and 80s prom vibes. It slides by effortlessly, easygoing. I won't say I like this more straightforward pop sound more than Let's Eat Grandma's more alternative arty take, but I do quite like it.

    ● Dry Cleaning - Secret Love. It's completely what I expect it to be. The deadpan vocals. The poppy post-punk backing instrumental tracks. The laid back style. This is a band I like just fine, and I like this album just fine. I'm never gonna love it, tho.

    ● The Cribs - Selling A Vibe. This is a band I just completely forget exists, which is a shame, because they're really right up my alley. This one is exactly what I want from them. Catchy, power poppy, upbeat and melodic. Yeah, it's on the poppy side, but it totally works. I'm into it.

    ● Home Star - A Binding Life. Emo-y, anthemic, and pop punky. Marietta's Evan Lescallette makes big hooks over big guitars sound like it's 2001. It's fun if likely fairly forgettable.

  • New Music Friday Thoughts:

    - Nobody says motherfucker cooler than Zach Bryan. Listening to him reminds me of a friend who got "caught" reading Murakami, and lamenting that they shouldn't be reading him because he doesn't write women well. I've totally lost the thread on whether he's controversial, but I am really digging this album. Highlights: Santa Fe, Appetite, Bad news, Say Why, Dry Deserts

    - Dry Cleaning not really my vibe. I like Hit My Head All Day enough. Guitars rip on My Soul/Half Pint. I think the vocals just don't do it for me.

    - Shamelessly love the Bruno single. So funky. His tour is going to be a blast, especially if Paak's presence indicates some Silk Sonic. It's also going to ruin me financially.

    - The IDK song with Pusha is flames. Pusha is on such a heater

    - Drivers License cover is beyond fun. Funky grandpa forever

    - Robyn singles fun as hell too. Prefer Talk to Me. "The purpose of my life is to stay horny." Queen!

-That Choker single posted earlier is excellent. Totally new to me artist. Excited to dig in to his catalogue.

    - Still to listen to: Jenny and the Cribs, at least

    - A fun one from earlier this week, that was new to me: Scared to Dance by Hermetic Delight

Zach Bryan is like that gifted kid in school who parties all weekend and rolls out of bed Monday to ace the test. His whole schtick is annoying as hell, but the motherfucker can write a song.

  • I'm seeing Madison Cunningham Saturday in a small church and I can't wait. The last two times I've seen her, she was leveling up in venue/size, and I think it's super cool that her last record wasn't as immediately accessible and that she's touring smaller venues. Her voice and instruments are going to absolutely soar in this church.

  • i received two (2) texts today asking me if i knew 2hollis was the guy from tortoise's kid. one of them was from someone that i told this news to 4 months ago. the grizzlies are trading ja. what a day

  • Bono + Tame Impala = Bonerism

    I see so clearly now.

    Go to your room.

  • Final day to vote for this year's Ultimate Rate, please do so before I go to sleep tonight. I'll be back on Monday's DMD with the results, unless the Chicago Bears playoff result cause me to fade into the mist, never to return

Anyone want to predict what three artists we'll end up choosing to go Geese hunting?

    oklou, ninajirachi, and matt damon

Fucking Matt Damon sent to Indieheads Charity Rate to the disdain of hundreds

I’m guessing Wednesday, YHWH Nailgun, and wildcard Viagra Boys

  • Very quick thoughts on some recent releases:

    • Winged Wheel - Desert So Green: I think taking the time and working out song structures and crafting the songs really paid off on this release. Supergroup of some of the best noise/jam musicians around and they recorded this just outside of Chicago. The album still feels loose and exploratory but there's a focus there on each song that really gives it this determined kraut feel. Speed Table and I See Poseurs Every Day feel like just well crafted songs while songs like Bird Spells do an amazing job of stretching to heaven and constantly unfolding.
    • Dry Cleaning - Secret Love: Cate Le Bon really has been an in demand producer these days, eh? I think this may be the strongest Dry Cleaning release since their debut. Love how lush and dreamy the title track is. They also put one of their best songs, Joy, at the end of the album and I respect the hell out of that. Florence remains one of the most confusingly enigmatic lyricists and frontperson. I'll need a while to dig through every one liner and absurdist line but Let Me Grow and You Will See The Fruit is the highlight for me musically and lyrically. "I constantly think there are spiders on me and around me I enjoyed your gig, even though I thought there were spiders all over me" is a line I'll be thinking about for a while.
    • Jenny On Holiday - Quicksand Heart: 1/2 of Let's Eat Grandma. Truthfully feels like an album from 1/2 of the duo. Jenny has a knack for melody and that still carries through to this solo album. While I think the bigger, more upbeat, songs like the title track and Do You Still Believe In Me? people will gravitate towards to, I preferred the slower tracks like These Streets I Know and Dolphins. With that said, I do feel like this is missing something and only further shows how Let's Eat Grandma is great because it's the sum of it's parts. Kinda like how Rosa's solo work (I Really Want to Stay at Your House) is solid but doesn't achieve the same heights as the work they do together.
  • I’m legitimately so excited for Puppetshades 5 - The Puppetshade Chronicles 4: The Cryptic Tear ended on such a dramatic/cliffhanger note, and it’s such a shame that it’s going to have to be delayed because of recording issues

I mean yeah, Jenna’s probs not going to die for real - she’s the main character - but still

And the all-out galactic war is going to be so interesting imo

  • Anyone heard quickly, quickly's 2025 album I Heard That Noise? Listened to it the first time today, thought it was very well produced indie. There were some parts to the last track that were reminiscent of the Microphones.

My first impressions are that it is really good; cohesive, interesting, solid lyrics, but not quite enough to stand out from the pack. Curious to hear others' thoughts

I thought it was a fantastic album. It came out the week after Bon Iver's album (i think) and I think it got lost in shuffle. It was definitely in my top 30 for the year.

  • fat whites live rules best album i listened to today

marty supreme soundtrack fun i liked the movie

dry cleaning catey bong is back and good

the cribs are back and good

    home star was alright

  • Artists with new releases that I want to listen to: DRAMA, Jenny on Holiday, Lawrence (EP). Plus, reissues by Brandy Dalton, Conrad Schnitzler, Pita, and The Other People Place. Plus about 40 singles. It's a "light" week, but here's another year of trying to listen to a whole bunch of shit once and, despite how much I might like it on first listen, then forgetting about it and moving on to the next batch.

The Drama album was well worth the wait from their last album.

    The Other People Place

    you'll never forget this one!

I'm digging this. Never heard it before.

if you like it you may find a lot to enjoy with the larger drexciya universe

  • Where should I start with Turnstile if I fucking love BIRDS but haven't heard anything else?

  • New Lorde is real good huh. The album title Virgin and the x-ray cover art are about the only things I dislike about it (and are arguably why it took me so long to finally check it out)

might be my favorite from her, although i think it's real close between her 3 good albums. cover works w the sound/aesthetic imo, helps pull it together for me

Yeah I don’t love the whole thing equally but it’s overall pretty strong and Current Affairs is a hell of a song.

  • The new Gladie album has jumped to the top of my "most anticipated album" list. I think it's going to be a big year for Philly musicians.

  • [deleted]

I'm not sure if I wanna listen to an artist called "Spotify"

    edit: well, joke ruined!

lol I wouldn’t either - updated. Come to think of it, naming a band “Spotify” might be brilliant.

  • I decided to cancel my Spotify subscription last night, but didn't really consider if I should look for a different service. Part of me wants to just solely rely on purchasing things on Bandcamp and uploading them to iBroadcast.

i've also been without streaming services since fall of last year (i think? i can't remember how long it's been) and the nts radio + bandcamp + discogs combo has worked well for me!

tbf i don't solely limit my listening to those two things—if i want to hear a single or spin a record that i had forgot about but haven't bought or check out something before purchasing it, i will use youtube. without premium, youtube is inconvenient enough that i can't rely on it but comes in handy when i've rinsed the fuck out of my personal library

I've been living without any music streaming services since September and it's been going okay! I have a decent library of mp3s of older stuff from the pre-Spotify days, supplemented with Bandcamp purchases and the occasional Qobuz purchase for things that are too mainstream to be on Bandcamp. I do wish it were easier to check out new albums to decide if I want to take the plunge and purchase them, but I managed to make those decisions based on singles alone in my teens, so I can do it again now.

Please, begging you go to the library and inquire about cds. And then inquire about purchase requesting and next thing you know BAM! New ratboys at the library

    that sounds expensive...

thank god it's a public service!

no thanks I’d rather my tax dollars go to bailing out crooked hedge funds

idk why but i also strongly agree with this. i like ebooks and all but crypto is kinda more lit rn

This is what we would all be going if we were really indie

I've been using the library recently for printing stuff. I think you're right, Wane.

  • An old friend randomly texted me after about five years and told me they still listen to a playlist I made them in like 2018. We used to exchange playlists of the songs we'd been listening to and it was a fun little thing, but I was shocked she was still going back to mine after all these years. Really feels good to feel like you've had an impact on someone else's music habits. Anyway I offered to make her a new playlist of all the garbage I've been listening to over the past few years, so that should teach her not to come to me for good music.

Since so many of you are begging here is the playlist.

I would post an apple music link because that is what I'm actually using these days but it doxes me pretty hard.

If you received this playlist would you go another 5 years without speaking to this person, or never speak to them again?

    Good but where Hotties

I was mostly focused on 2021-2025 but I did consider adding pool hopping.

  • RIP Scott Walker, who would have been 83 today. Picking a favorite Scott Walker song is insanely tough (I tried doing it over 5 years ago for Paste), so from each decade he was making music, what's your favorite Scott song?

    60s: "It's Raining Today"

70s: "Shutout" (could also be "The Electrician" on a different day)

    80s: "Track Three"

    90s: "The Cockfighter"

00s: "Clara" (still my all-time favorite Scott song)

    10s: "Epizootics!"

    60s: Duchess

    70s: The Electrician

    80s: Sleepwalkers Woman

    90s: Farmer in the City

    00s: Cossacks Are

    10s: Zercon

For 60s: The Old Man’s Back Again (Dedicated to the Neo-Stalinist Regime)

    For 70s: The Electrician

Hard to pick individual tracks for the later arthouse stuff

I finally listened to Scott Walker 3 last month and was blown away not knowing what to expect. Art pop / experimental easy music from another dimension vibe.

maybe i’m too 4 pilled but angels of ashes and duchess are peak

  • Anyone remember the band Empires? I was obsessed with The Academy Is... when I was a younging and when Tom Conrad left I followed. Really liked their first two LPs. Lead singer kinda reminded me of the guy from KOL. Their music had a lot of night/dark imagery. Spit The Dark I think was my favorite track.

I DO own two cds but I wish it was on Tidal for easy listening.

    The Academy Is...

holy hell that just unlocked some memories - my friend was into them...and I think I saw them? they were on Fueled by Ramen right?

They were (are?)! I think I saw that they reunited or something.

They reunited and William Beckett looks, uh, older, for sure
