Much like David Byrne’s take on Paramore’s 'Hard Times,' this version grew on me after a few listens. It feels less like a standard cover and more like a reimagining, one that I’ve come to really appreciate. He's 73 and I appreciate his continued contribution to the music world.
Wish he would’ve covered something off her 2nd album but this is cool. Hoping Olivia’s third album strays further from the ballads, her more upbeat songs are 1000 times more interesting imo
I love GUTS, I just bought a used copy and it's my favorite right now. I've always had an appreciation for poppy rock songs, and she does them very well.
Can I just say, I really love it when a cover doesn't acknowledge the differences in the artists performing the song. Olivia Rodrigo sings this song from her perspective as a girl in high school with heardache. On some level, it would make more sense to change the perspective if David Byrne sings it. He's an old man, after all. But that would be too self-conscious. It's much nicer if the cover just keeps things they are.
But, like, I could 100% believe that in an alternate universe David Byrne did actually have a van loaded with weapons. But there's no universe where David Byrne is devastated about a high school breakup, totally ridiculous.
What do you mean by “unintentional?” The intention is that Olivia is celebrating the anniversary of her album and David/Talking Heads are artists that she admires and asked him to cover a song. And he has already performed with her at a concert and had good things to say about her and seems to like her music.
I love how pedantic you are and I can only imagine how it feels to have to pretend to love this song for the sake of a reddit argument. Have a great day!
Maybe you'll realize as you grow older that people don't ever lose the feelings they had in their youth. There's no moment when a young person becomes an old person. And besides that, I'm sure David Byrne hears a teenager singing a song like this and thinks "what the hell could a child ever know about longing"
I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted. The cover is a hoot, but for me too it comes off as a goof throughout. As I agree it lacks emotional authenticity. Which is fine! A novelty cover can still be a treat.
The cover of Hard Times hooked me a lot more, but glad to have this one too.
okay funky grandpa!
When DB sings it the focus is more on the car and driving and less on the break up.

when that came out i would constantly walk around my house going HAAAAAAARD TIIIIIIMES in his little old man voice
I was tickled pink when he sang that on his most recent tour. I was hoping, but not really expecting it to happen.
Looks like he ended up finding that large automobile
this is about chris frantz

Interested to see who else does the covers, I appreciate her doing whatever she wants even if it doesn't fit the current "pop" framework.
Jens Lekman-esque
why are his consonants so crispy
GOAT covering GOAT
I like this
I'd love for Olivia to cover Heaven by Talking Heads, I think she would nail it
What a weird silly cover I'm glad David is having fun!
never would of fucking expected this lmao

But he did change the lyric ‘she’s so much older than me’ to ‘he’s so much younger than me’
It would be awesome if he kept it and just implied his ex left him for a 97 year old lesbian
Whats a polar bear doing in Arlington Texas

This makes me appreciate how good the original is. Kinda corny to cover a song that no stretch of the imagination can make it feel real for him.
What do you mean?
I could never believe that these lyrics are true for him
I heard he also didn’t actually have a van loaded with weapons. What a fraud.

I'm saying there are no emotional angles to this song that feel real for him but okay. Have a good one
This is going to blow your mind but David Byrne was once a young man.
Having this kind of mindset for David Byrne is so funny considering some of the songs he’s written lol
I guess it just feels lazy and unintentional. I'm sure the money is good though.

I never even said anything about what I thought of the song, I was just curious about your comments. I’m sorry. I wasn’t trying to be pedantic.
Are you this painful in real life? Blimey.
It kind of seems like a reminiscence of a day of life in his youth, looking back and that feels the vibe perfectly.
The song focuses quite a bit on transportation and suburbia, core Byrne subjects.
The entire point of the song is about youth and lost innocence, maybe if he made it about old people retaking drivers exams we'd have something

Maybe you'll realize this cover is bad or maybe you'll realize that not everyone has to like or believe in the same things you do. Good day sir
Because he'd be cycling?
Finally someone with a sense of humor, the thought had crossed my mind lol
