I apologize in advance on how dense I am, but we just moved into a new apartment that I realize we probably got scammed over. Anyway I'm trying to make the best of it. The air quality is kind of rough so I'm going through the house right now to see where the air filters go. I found the first one in the basement. I'm assuming you can wash it or use an air can on it. It's filthy underneath it. Then I found the second place where I'm assuming another one can go, but there isn't one in there.

First, what kind of filter do I even fit in the second picture, and should I be concerned on how much crap is in there?

Second, do I clean the filter in the first one or is it supposed to be replaced?

  • The first one looks reusable. Just clean it, forcing water opposite airflow side. Let it dry completely and replace. The second one… usually there isnt two BUT measure that second hole and get a filter that size. Change it every 1-3 months depending upon house occupancy. Since its a rental, suggest to your landlord that youve been having allergy issues since moving in and send them that second pic. Hope you get lucky!

Okay sweet. I appreciate it thank you so much

  • That first one is a washable permanent filter, so rinse it with warm water and a little dish soap, spray from the clean side out, then let it dry all the way before reinstalling. The second opening looks like a supply duct boot, so it usually gets a vent cover not a filter, and the real filter is normally at the furnace or air handler return. If you want better air quality, ask the landlord about switching to a normal pleated filter like a Filter King type and change it every month or two at first.

Awesome I will. Thank you so much
