Is there an alternative type of duct or set up that can be used to make this ductwork better?

This duct runs from the ceiling of our laundry room and out into a closet from the neighboring wall.

The duct running into the closet doesn’t bother me, but in the laundry room the duct is so big and blocks out half of the light from the light fixture that’s right beside it. When you’re in the room it really fills up the space and overall a bit of an eyesore.

Is there anything that can be done to fix this?

  • Is that the only duct on top or is there one on the right side? Square duct wouldn't be much smaller.

Cheapest option: move or add light

  • Yeah, whoever installed that and/or approved that really just didn’t care. Also, single wall flue pipe is sketchy af.

  • Punch a hole in the side and move the duct over.

  • I’m wondering, is that is a down flow furnace? The flex could be replaced with steel duct. The whole installation looks like a landlord special.
