H: See, we used to have lots of debates and even wars about if humans have souls, and what happens when you die.
A: Ahh yes, many primitive worlds believe in some kind of immaterial self, but they usually are forced to accept evidence to the contrary around the time they develop wormhole travel, due to the understandings required.
H: Oh no, we stopped arguing because all have souls now. Some guy back on Earth invented them so he could send someone he didn't like to hell. That's the human equivalent of the bad place those other cultures talk about.
A: But... Wait, if he had to invent souls, how was there already a 'hell'?
H: He invented that too.
A: ...
H: Anywho, his soul machine malfunctioned, fell into the hell dimension, but that's equidistant from every point in our universe, so whenever a human is born, the soul machine detects that human and makes them a soul. We're trying to find a way to shut it off, but so far all we've figured out is how to make it see other creatures as humans, so they also go to hell when they die, like the rest of us for now.
Alien J'hon: But surely the simple act of RECEIVING a soul wouldn't result in that being going to hell when they die? Doesn't that require the individual to have perpetrated acts of evil during their life?
Human Fred: Do you know anybody who hasn't perpetrated at least ONE evil act in their life?
(Side note: I Googled "Who might be the most 'good' person in all of human history - because the most evil is often contended between Stalin, Hitler, Mao Tse Tung and a few other dictators. It put Buddha at #1, ahead of Jesus of Nazareth, with Nelson Mandela in #3, Gandhi in #4 and Mother Teresa in #5)
Really? That’s an interesting Google result, considering one of Jesus of Nazareth’s claims to fame is that he literally never sinned - never committed an evil act.
He was doing the Lord's work. The whip was necessary to execute His will. And we all know that when you do something in the name of the Lord, you aren't sinning, no matter what the actions themselves may suggest. This has never led to any issues ever.
But let's face it, the AI didn't come up with an opinion of its own, it gave that based on information scraped from online... so more people in the world would vote Buddha at #1 than literally Jesus Christ. xD
I mean I can think of a anime/manga that eventually reveals that the fantasy setting is actually from nano bot/nanites so like all the magic and such is actually the nanites doing it.
Turns out "magic" is just tech with different terminology.
Possibly different operating principles too. but human tech is no stranger to using different operating principles to achieve the same end. See steam power vs internal combustion vs nuclear power vs solar.
"Magic" is just a label people hang on things and phenomena that they don't know the operational principles of. Even among cultures that treat "magic" as a serious study and practice, once they start studying magic in depth, they'll start inventing more specific and USEFUL terminology to describe the bits and pieces and how they work: thaumaturgy, demonology, mana, thaums, souls, artifice, etc etc etc...

A: What is the minimum threshold for detection? Cognition? Sentience? Sapenance?
H: shruges
A: I need to check on my hamster.
Don't worry. Every human who dies serves as reinforcement for the infernal insurgency. The problem should sort itself out.
Alien: ...I'm not entirely certain if that is a good thing
Is there any way for the guy to invent heaven?
No. Why would he need a silly place like that? Can't risk that one dickhead somehow getting out of Hell and into Heaven. Better safe than sorry.

Can confirm - using a whip to drive the moneylenders and merchants from the temple is NOT a sin!
Misdemeanor, maybe, but not a sin...

I know, it surprised the heck outta me, too! xD

This made me break out laughing, bravo good sir, bravo.
This feels like a more specific reference is being made and if it is i sould like to know.
Many other users promoted their settings on this sub, so I felt ok doing so too.
Neat

Well yeah but im truly resonating with "giant reality crows" tbh
Tbf if we’re talking about “didn’t I say to make my abilities average in the next life” it’s still fantasy
Scrapped Princess is a good example
Any technology sufficiently advanced is indistinguishable from magic.
And any sufficiently understood magic is indistinguishable from science.
Yeah. Like UNGOC says about their thaumaturgy
Any sufficiently advanced magic is indistinguishable from technology.
Any technology that can be distinguished from magic is insufficiently advanced
Humans do with physic laws exactly as the war laws. Follow to the letter, not the spirit of rule
Hard sci fi only excludes the supernatural if youre a coward. Commit to creation, you can get so much more mileage!
Lie demons are just demons that like to lie down a lot. Great for marathoning Netflix shows with though.
Tinspread carpet
Counterpoint, we’d probably make the cool Giant Reality Crows because their cool.
That and now we all find them hot because we’ve always had (Giant Reality Crows definitely didn’t change reality to this)

Why did this immediately remind me of the stormlight archives?
Technically every weapon can send a soul to hell if the soul is of a really, really bad person.
What?
