Nobody believed the Humans when they told us their Ships had Souls.

The UNSF "Spearhead" was the Ship it happened on.

Every metric, every material science and every physics equation told us it was impossible with hard, undeniable data. Entry into Atmosphere was impossible in her condition. She would burn up long before anything would reach the ground.

But as she plunged down onto the Planet with her Bow only a mangled wreck and burning on every Deck, she held together for those 104 extra seconds to the Surface, allowing the remaining Crew to escape.

Only Captain Dunhill remained on Board when she hit the ground. Just a second before, our Stations intercepted a binary code despite her Radio-Equipment clearly being non-functional at this point:

"01001001 01110100 00100000 01110111 01100001 01110011 00100000 01100001 00100000 01110000 01101100 01100101 01100001 01110011 01110101 01110010 01100101 00100000 01110011 01100101 01110010 01110110 01101001 01101110 01100111 00100000 01110111 01101001 01110100 01101000 00100000 01111001 01101111 01110101 00100000 01100001 01101100 01101100 00101100 00100000 01101101 01111001 00100000 01100100 01100101 01100001 01110010 00100000 01000011 01110010 01100101 01110111 00101110 00100000 01000001 01101110 01100100 00100000 01110100 01101000 01100001 01101110 01101011 00100000 01111001 01101111 01110101 00100000 01100110 01101111 01110010 00100000 01101110 01101111 01110100 00100000 01101100 01100101 01110100 01110100 01101001 01101110 01100111 00100000 01101101 01100101 00100000 01100100 01101001 01100101 00100000 01100001 01101100 01101111 01101110 01100101 00101100 00100000 01000011 01100001 01110000 01110100 01100001 01101001 01101110 00101110 00100000 00100010 01010011 01110000 01100101 01100001 01110010 01101000 01100101 01100001 01100100 00100010 00100000 01101111 01110110 01100101 01110010 00100000 01100001 01101110 01100100 00100000 01101111 01110101 01110100 00101110"

  • "It was a pleasure serving with you all, my dear Crew. And thank you for not letting me die alone, Captain. "Spearhead" over and out."

Humbled me being able to echo my curiosity with people like you \o/

Is there an app or something that translates binary, or just something you happen to know?

Ones and zeroes grouped in eights are easy to spot and transcribe as text but I choose to spare a few neurons and use this tool

Now that you mention it, there are definitely easy to spot patterns. Might help if i knew more ascii

    Then have a blast friend:

    Uppercase ASCII Alphabet Song (65-90)

    65 is A, 66 is B 67 is C, 68 is D 69 is E, 70 is F 71 is G, 72 is H 73 is I, 74 is J 75 is K, 76-77-78-79 (L-M-N-O) 80 is P, 81 is Q 82 is R, 83 is S, 84 is T 85 is U, 86 is V 87 is W, 88 is X 89 is Y, and 90 is Z Now I know my ASCII codes, next time sing them on the road!

Lowercase ASCII Alphabet Song (97-122 - simply add 32 to the uppercase numbers)

    97 is a, 98 is b 99 is c, 100 is d 101 is e, 102 is f 103 is g, 104 is h 105 is i, 106 is j 107 is k, 108-109-110-111 (l-m-n-o) 112 is p, 113 is q 114 is r, 115 is s, 116 is t 117 is u, 118 is v 119 is w, 120 is x 121 is y, and 122 is z

Now I know my lowercase too, learning's fun for me and you!

Not all heroes wear capes. Thanks for that link.

Technically it’s just “out” when ending a transmission. “Over” means “I’m done talking, now it’s your turn to talk” whereas “out” means “I’m done talking and do not need/expect a reply”.

    Television has lied to us

One second before unscheduled disassembly she spewd out some data in the most unconventional method no organic based intelligence has ever implemented so successfully under 380 milliseconds.

It used all kinds of eletric motors still online in the utilities and maintenance grid in a makeshift shipwide phased array, using constructive interference to transmit the message relayed a level ago.

Time was of uttermost preciousness as impact was imminent so a simple text to binary conversion was chosen by the ship's computer.

Over the fast approaching surface of the planet Spearhead was for the last time ever. Out for good she was about to be.

"Over and out" was all that was possible within the last moment before contact.

The omnissiah wills it brave little machine spirit.

Tf am i crying over an imaginary ship for?!😭

  • Gorkaroh called his commander back on Celuran, still feelings the after effects of the hard landing onto Earth. Kohlr saw the ping on his desk, the ship was destined to burn upon reentry. He had 23 soldiers stationed on the Spearhead, so when one of them contacted him, he was caught in a state of shock.

    “Gorkaroh?” Commander Kohrl answered hesitantly.

“Commander, I am pleased to report that we had no casualties in our unit upon reentry to Earth.”

“How is that possible? I saw the reports!”

“The humans have claimed for ages that their ships have ‘souls’ and we mocked them. I’m sending the last communication from the deck of the Spearhead”

Kohrl read the report, in primitive binary, and sat at his desk, in awe. “So it’s true. Interesting.”

After issuing directives and reports to the Hebulpn Council, he campaigned to collaborate strictly with Human ship builders for his fleet. The other members laughed and mocked Kohrl, until they met with Gorkaroh and his subordinates.

“We reentered Earth’s atmosphere destined for death, until the ship channeled its remaining hope and energy to save us all. The only casualty was the Human captain, who ‘went down with his ship’ as is tradition for their culture, dating back millennia, to their sea fairing days.”

Gorkaroh: Sir, with permission. The ship genuinely saved all of us. May we put in for a commendation and an award to be listed with the Spearhead's registry both at home and hear on Earth?

  • 'The Ship Who Sang' by Anne McCafferty part of the Brain and Brawn series she wrote. Great book, even though it was written damn near 50 odd years ago.

It was a series where human brains were placed in ships--they did all the running of the ship with the brawn essentially piloting the ship. The most famous and active 'Brain' was Helva, who was formerly a disabled human.

Not brains, it was their entire, disabled bodies that was encased in an almost impenetrable enclosure. There was a code for each ship that could be played to open it, but they were very well-guarded and only to be used in the most dire circumstances. One 'brawn'(regular human crewmember) actually managed to get his hands on one of these codes. He had a fixation on the 'Brain' in the ship he was stationed on.

    Helva, from the Hx-834.

(Replace the x with the first letter of the name of the current Brawn to get the complete registration)

Also, Anne McCaffrey(get the name right, please) was the author who taught Dragons to Fly and Ships to Sing.

Yeah, she's one of my all-time favorite authors.

Ahhh Anne McCaffrey's work is a delight! I'm most partial to her PERN stories, but I'm also a fan of her debut novel Restoree. Plus the Crystal Singer trilogy is really good. OOOH and can't forget Powers That Be!!

It was the Pern stories that got me hooked. Sitting in a military barracks(15month Conscription in the RNoAF), with teary eyes, reading Ruth... Thankfully, I waited until the weekend to read that one. Could have been a bit of an issue if anyone saw.

Dragonsinger wasn't much better for my image.

Some actually lists 5 books in the Crystal Singer series.

Dragonsinger + Dragonsong were wonderful, and an interesting look into crafthall life! Dragondrums was good too, but it didn't hit quite the same.

I can only find one more Crystal Singer book, a prequel novella called The Coelura. What's the fifth one?

oooh thanks, I'll check it out!

Crystal Song, Crystal Singer, Crystal Line, Nimisha's Ship, The Coelura (novella) and Killashandra.

  • Why, the captain could have survived. Her death was unnecessary.

The captain did survive. So did the Spearhead. In every crew member that went on to tell their tale. And the captain couldn't have left her. If you gonna go on adventure, its better with a friend.

Captain goes down with the ship, time honored tradition.

  • It's a rick roll isn't it?

would've been funny, but it isnt. Not the vibe i was going with.

    No, no it's not.

The translation was posted in a reply.

Reddit doesn't like the account of zeros and ones in a proper rick roll

"Be sure to drink your Ovaltine"

It most definitely is a rick roll

Nope. Not a Rick roll. dbpm1 got it.

  • The flying Lamb from One Piece its Basically the Same 🥹
