So can I. I spent a few weeks in Houston (okay, southwestern 'burbs,) in '95, and remember his clips on the news. That white hair, blue glasses and phrasing still sticks with me 30 years later.

    parent root
    27 points DontPanic42H2G2

If you only spent a few weeks here and he had that impact, imagine those of us that lived here!

When I was in 4th grade, my teacher was dating the weatherman there (they later married <3). For our school silent auction that year, she donated a tour of the news station and to watch it live from the set. My best friend a I won! Well, our parents bid together and won.

It was fucking awesome to see! Imagine being 10 years old and getting to see Marvin Zindler say "Slime in the ice machine" live?!?! That was something I watched every night with my parents. Damn, I miss those times.

    parent root
    3 points jkalchik99

Oh, absolutely NO argument here! He was very distinctive. You never forget that kind of personality.

Come to think of it, one of the gents I worked claimed to be also associated with the folks who did the Slime! in the ice machine! rap track. Haven't talked to him since my last work trip to Houston.

    parent root
    1 points Nailed_Claim7700

Y'all I'm starting to get tears in my eyes, thinking back and seeing how much time has passed and thinking of all my good times, friends, drugs, parties, and the few friends I still have living from that time. God I'd pay more attention if I could do it all over again.

    parent root
    1 points Efficient_Market1234

It's weird what can stick. I was visiting my grandparents in the UK many years back, and we'd watch this Australian soap opera, "Neighbours." I don't know if my grandparent(s) actually watched it or if it just tended to come on after something else we'd watch...anyway, I was probably visiting for like a couple weeks at that time. I'd never seen the show before and haven't seen it since. I still kind of remember the theme song.

Both Obama and Biden have deported more people than Trump. Trump just does it with even more cruelty.

Obama was even called the deporter in cheif

    parent root
    5 points N0Tapastor

Of course. We don’t want the administration recruiting white supremacists to cosplay as military terror squads going around scaring the shot out of people and mirdering citizens.

    parent root
    0 points SnooEagles4121

Our borders actually work better when they're more open. Migrant workers could come up from Mexico, do the seasonal work, and then GO HOME. They don't WANT to stay here. And then there would be more money in Mexico, would mean less crime and a higher standard of living, which would in turn also discourage emigration to the US.

The only reason the border is closed is so Republicans can shriek about "illegal immigration", which keeps the racists riled and donating campaign funds.

I'm really tired of protesters. I'm tired of their stupidity. When their savior Obama used ICE to deport people illegally in the US, not one peep from these spineless snails. They fight Trump for the past ten YEARS, and have proven NOTHING. ZILCH, NADA!!!! They support lawlessness, murders, drug cartels, socialist, communist and corruption. In my opinion I think it's time to take the gloves off and start arresting them and throwing the law at them without mercy, just like they do with people that don't AGREE with them.

    parent

Keep crying, see you at mid terms

    parent root
    0 points ArchaicMolecule

People with your viewpoints are the minority in Houston.

    parent root
    0 points Stumbles88

So we should let anybody come here that wants too? We can’t just wander into any country we want. Immigration laws need to be followed. Perhaps do something about the real problem. Why are so many people coming here in the first place?

    parent root
    2 points ArchaicMolecule

Let me make a very clear distinction here. These protests are not necessarily about opposing immigration laws themselves, but about opposing the cruelty, excessive force, and incompetence used in enforcing them. It is reasonable, and necessary, to be concerned when enforcement is carried out by agents who appear insufficiently trained in de-escalation while carrying weapons capable of ending a life in seconds. That imbalance creates fear, not safety since they are obviously in a position of power over the average person.

    parent root
    -3 points Stumbles88

If an official with a gun tells me to do something I will shut my mouth and do it. Then there is no argument. Too many people want to scream and cry. If they know officials have no power they will not comply.

    parent root
    5 points ArchaicMolecule

What if you comply and they still act violently toward you? What if you’re at a stop light and you get surrounded by 3 black SUVs and next thing you know, armed men come out and they’re yelling at you, pointing a weapon in your face demanding you step out your vehicle because they think you may be undocumented and since you’re not carrying your passport or whatever, decide to arrest you because you couldn’t prove to them you were a citizen right then and there? How do you know those armed men are actual law enforcement and not a group of impersonators attempting to kidnap you even if you comply?

Biden and Obama did millions of deportations yet, we didn’t hear any of the violence or scandal/drama regarding those. These sort of things have been sensationalized to a disturbing degree. I understand immigration law is important to uphold but I don’t agree with these callous open displays of violence in our communities or daycare/schools.

    parent root
    3 points N0Tapastor

Someone wearing a mask who will not identify themselves is not an “official.” We’re pretty hardwired to be scared AF of masked people with guns.

    parent root
    3 points theillcook

how do i know they're an official? They got no badge, no id, wears masks, drives around in rental cars. There's no way to know if they're officials.

    parent root
    -4 points Stumbles88

They got guns? People disobey, holler and scream and get shot. Happens often, yet people want to act surprised and shocked every time.

    parent root
    1 points theillcook

lol, since when is holler and scream breaking the law? Get real bud, it's freedom of speech, baby!

    parent root
    1 points Stumbles88

Seems fairly often people get shot arguing with cops. Comes a time when you should have a brain and shut your mouth. Why fight a loosing battle?

    parent root
    3 points theillcook

It's so funny, people like you screams "but my freedom!" All day long, then bend over and takes it up the ass when the Republican government shoves a giant dildo up your ass, then begs for more, lol.

    parent root
    3 points According-Tone4246

    Your delusional

    parent root
    4 points ArchaicMolecule

Not as delusional as thinking Abbott or Cruz ever cared to do something regarding the Texan lives lost during the Central Texas Floods last year or the Freeze of 2021.

    parent root
    0 points According-Tone4246

Did you expect them to control the weather???

    parent root
    2 points ArchaicMolecule

They could’ve at least pretended to care. They’re elected officials for a reason, it’s their job to be able to do something about the infrastructure in this state to prevent further tragedy.

    parent root
    2 points According-Tone4246

Tragedy happens everyday. If we were all psychic we'd all be rich. I have a feeling you blame Abbott and Cruz because they have a (R) beside their name. Explain the Tragedy that Biden (D) and Harris (D) had CREATED!!!

    parent root
    3 points ArchaicMolecule

True, but the death toll of those events could’ve been lower if they had done something about making sure Texas can withstand those natural weather events (other states have more severe weather and nowhere near the casualties we had here). I don’t have political loyalty to any party or politician. I didn’t like Biden or Harris either, but regardless of what party our politicians belong to, they need to be held accountable for putting the wellbeing of the people first.
