• Listen man. I buy plants if they look pretty. I really don’t know what I’m doing.

    I really don’t know what I’m doing.

This is just the story of my general life🤣

  • I buy first and experiment, unless its a taxonomy I know to be especially “needy” (usually carnivorous plants in my case).

I just got into carnivorous plants at the end of last year. They are generally not a good indoor house plant without strong grow lights, except for Pinguiculas, they are a little easier. If you were to start somewhere, start with them.

Most temperate carnivores also need a cold dormancy each year.

For my VFTs, I usually chuck ‘em in the fridge once they’ve fully died back (since we don’t really get enough “winter” in the Bay Area and I lack a good spot in the yard anyway).

Yep. My vft is chilling in my crisper. It scared the wife once lol.

I feel like you should always give your spouse a heads up when you plan to store living carnivores in a crisper.

It's way more fun this way though!

  • I feel like most people get to the point they have a preference of genus and most of their plants fall into that category, where they have good idea of the care requirements before purchasing.

With that being said, before I found my preferred genus, I would do quick search even if it was in the store to make sure the plant was the right fit for my home before purchasing. Before I started doing that I did loose a few plants as the care requirements just weren’t obtainable in my home. (I’m looking at you majesty palm)

  • I'm on a low-buy for plants this year. I'm only allowed to buy (not exchange, grow, or prop) 5 new plants this year. I have way too many and need to pare down.

Because of this, I need to ask myself if I want this plant well enough to make it one of the 5.

I love this!! I might have to consider it for myself! Do you have 5 “wish list” plants or is it just a spontaneous 5?

No wish list at the moment.

I'm allowing the 5 because should I go to the Philadelphia Flower Show this year (if I can get the time off for it), they always have plants I haven't heard of there.

Thats a great suggestion 👌 im sitting at 50 types, not including babies and props. I feel the need to buy a new one every monthly pay, that started a few years ago and now its a ritual spending the pre pay weeks deciding what I need to get 🤔 😅 🙃 its become essential i have to buy one each month, my succulents and cactus have drastically increased since they dont grow much 😁

  • Buy seeds, read packet, fuck around and find out It's especially fun when you live in a place that plants hate to grow :3

Haha. FAFO. I've definitely done that.

  • I buy it I try it. If I doesn’t like where / how I live it gets put in the bin. The only plants in my house that get special treatment is the orchids and carnivores.

My house, my rules. Adapt or die. (My motto)

  • Impulse buyer for sure. I buy what I like the looks of or maybe the name of and go from there. Sometimes they make it, sometimes they don’t, and I don’t loose sleep over it.

  • A little of both depending on where I got the plant. If I see something cool in store I'll grab it and research after I get home or if there's something I really want I'll research about it and find it online to order.

  • If I see a plant I adore, I look at the care requirements before I buy. If I can't meet them, I don't get it 🥺

  • I do a quick Google to check that a plant isn't wildly inappropriate to grow in my conditions first, then do the real research after I get it home.

  • I just get the plant i want. If it survives my care routine and supplies, great. If not... meh.

  • It depends how expensive the plant is. I like to use Google image search to identify plants in the store and get some basic info about them. But I look at so much plant-related social media that I already know what plants have a reputation before I even go to the store. I see calatheas and go “Haha, nope.”

  • I’ve done both. I might do a quick check into the plant before purchasing but not always.

  • If I’m looking for a plant to go into a specific area in my house, I’ll research and plan and make sure I get something just right. 🪴 If we walk into a store that has plants and my husband falls in love with one of them, then it’s coming home with us and I’ll do everything in my power to make that a happy plant. 😁🪴❤️

  • If I like the look of the plant, I will buy it. Research later lol. But I have watched youtube videos, so I know to keep away from temperamental plants.

  • I buy from the leftover shelf. Or 'used'. So anyhting goes. Although... Thrips and other shits giving me a hard time for a while now, so except maybe for a specific spot I won't get anything new in the near future. Also no calathea because reasons.

  • I check care requirements before buying, because I don't want to spend money on something that won't be compatible with me.

  • If I see something I like I get it! My local plant shop lady is extremely knowledgeable. If I’m looking at a plant I’ve never had before I will ask her what to do. If I get something from a big box store I will do research.

  • I only buy Hoyas and jungle cacti. I have a few other plants but I found over the years I really enjoy them. Plus you can very easily run out of space 🤣💚

  • Buy first, ask questions later. Unless it’s a species I’ve never had

  • Thankfully all the new plants I seem to be attracted to are pretty low maintenance!

  • Trial and error.

  • I see, I want, I get. Not a smart approach, as I have made messes of many plants over the years. Sometimes I see, I want, I get, I slowly kill, I go and re-get and the cycle starts again.

  • I always check if they are toxic to cats before buying, and usually I buy plants when they're on sale so I won't have to feel too bad if they don't like my house

  • Buy first. Ask questions later.

At first, I try my standard plant routine and if it's not happy then I'll research to adjust.
