Throwback to the NHL logos of the late 80's/early 90's.

NHL 94 would have had 26 teams. San Jose, Ottawa, Tampa, Anaheim and Florida were all added. And Minnesota moved to Dallas.

Based on no San Jose and this Jets logo, this logo set can only be from the 1990-91 season.

Yup, 1990-91 was also the last year for the "N" North Stars logo.

Always had a soft spot for the design of Vancouver skate, though it really didn’t fit the club’s history.

    parent
    156 points Overreactinguncles

If they wanted to fit the club’s history, the logo would just be a big “L”

    parent root
    43 points WillyLongbarrel

I guess we should go back to the stick-in-rink logo and just flip it around…

    parent root
    17 points Overreactinguncles

    Haha flip it sideways

    parent root
    11 points noodles_jd

I read that as 'stink-in-rink' and nodded on agreement.

Johnny Canuck was a lumberjack with ice skates.

    parent root
    4 points njdevils901

3 cup finals appearances and consistent playoffs in every decade is nothing to scoff at (same dry spots but thats every team). You guys remind me of Vikings, always being contenders no matter the core even if it gets traded away

    parent root
    5 points RechargedFrenchman

Pretty sure at this point it's multiple big "L"s; it's been nearly 60 years in the NHL with no Cups. The damn Vancouver Millionaires won a cup 110 years ago, the first west coast team to ever do so, but since the Canucks formed we can't win anything other than division titles and "most embarrassing sports riot".

    parent root
    14 points chostax-

I’m in my 30s and this is the first time I’ve noticed the skate. It’s always just been lines to me, I’m actually so disappointed with myself.

    parent root

Me too. Literally grew up just outside of Vancouver and have watched them my whole life. Never knew it was a skate on the old logo lol

    You dissing the spaghetti? 👀

    parent root
    19 points MarkyMarquam

No, I love it. But I also love tradition and integrating location-specific elements. The green/blue is classic and really matches coastal BC, as do the orca and native designs in the current logo.

    parent root
    56 points Give-Me-The-Bat

Curious how you feel about the logo we are going with next year

Some teams appreciate tradition. Or have no imagination. Either way.

    parent root
    45 points scratchydaitchy

Same with Philly, Habs, Wings, etc.

I gotta say if it works, keeping it the same and building tradition is definitely the way to go.

I don’t get VAN, LAK and BUF not only changing logos but entire colour schemes as well.
    No thanks.

    parent root
    19 points CKNW98

VAN's original colour scheme was blue/green/white, but a design firm convinced the team to go with black/orange/yellow because it was more aggressive and blue/green were wimpy baby colours (or something like that)

“The Canuck colours were all wrong. Blue-green is the coolest colour of all. Slows the pulse, reduces aggression, promotes calmness. Psychiatric wards are painted blue-green. Encourages tranquility. With the Canucks’ uniforms, we are going from the coolest of colours — blue-green — to the hottest — red-orange. The cool colour is passive, the hot one aggressive. Plus the black. It’s the contrast of colours that creates emotion. White produces no response at all, so we went for yellow, which is warm, pleasant, happy. Upbeat. What we are attempting to create is an atmosphere that will help create the happy, upbeat, aggressive player — and, hopefully, the happy, upbeat fan."

    parent root
    14 points scratchydaitchy

Let’s not forget VAN also went with dark blue, dark red and white for a minute during the Sedins era as well.

I thought the black, red and yellow was too much like the Flames.
I also think letters/word on a logo is kind of a lame, unimaginative cop out.
I much prefer a graphic of an object, animal or scene(Wild for example). I also really like an original design like the Nordiques, Wings or Flyers.

I think the current uniform/logo of VAN with the unique blue/green colours, original hockey stick/rink on the shoulders and the Orca on the front is awesome.

Personally I would get rid of the word Vancouver, but whatever, it’s still their best uniform yet in my humble opinion.

    parent root
    10 points Big_Mudd

Let’s not forget VAN also went with dark blue, red and white for a minute during the Sedins era as well.

I don't know what got into so many of the blue teams in the early 2000s that compelled them to abandon their vibrant beautiful blues to all wear the same dark navy-ish drab blue.

Edmonton and NYI also went with boring dark blues when their OG colours were already gorgeous. Then the Blue Jackets come along and do the same thing.

And don't get me started on all the teams that completely abandoned their greens, reds, and purples to all wear black.........

    parent root
    5 points FialaIsMyDad

The Kings were so much better when they had purple (forum blue)

    parent root
    3 points VaunBob

I agree, I love the skate as an alt but feel it should stay as that. The Canucks also got rid of the “VANCOUVER” over the orca before their 50th anniversary season in 2019-20. It has just been the orca logo by itself since.

I hated the red era of St Louis especially that terrible diagonal red striped monstrosity. The Blues jerseys now are beautiful.

    parent
    9 points ReasonableTruth0

I like the logo of the 90s Blues.  The red outline makes it pop

    parent root
    5 points sleep_m0de

Agree as a subtle tertiary look, but the red they overloaded into the jersey vs that same Pantone blue like 10 other teams use/were using was unnecessary. The light blue yellow white only no trim around the numbers looks clean and classic.

    parent root
    6 points NizzySP

I actually can't believe how much I disagree. Those red st. Louis jerseys from the 90s really pop. I think the new Blues jerseys are so bland and soft looking.

    parent root
  • 33 points AmeriCanada98

I like how almost half of these are almost identical to that team's current logo

A bunch left these designs for a bit but most are back

    parent
    20 points Chimpbot

The Bruins' logo has had some minor tweaks every now and again over the years, but the spoked B is still the spoked B.

The design of the bear, however, is a completely different matter. Sometimes we have a normal-looking bear, and others wind up with Meth Bear.

    parent
    9 points Admirable-Scarcity-8

Y’know what’s funny? It technically hasn’t. They changed the shade of orange in the logo twice.

The original lasted from 1967-1999, Then they switched to a more neon orange which lasted from 1999-2023. Then they changed it to a darker orange which lasts till’ today.

    parent root
    8 points deadpools_dick

Then there’s that abomination they did in the early 2000’s. Completely forgot about that lol

    parent root

I feel like most of these haven't changed because they didn't need to. I will say, however, that the Wild should keep using the North Stars colors with their jerseys. Those were pretty sick.

    parent
    7 points Humillionaire

I appreciate the throwback but the Wild's regular home jerseys are some of the most beautiful sweaters ever in hockey.

    parent root
    6 points Fetty_is_the_best

This feels like a hot take. I think they look perpetually stuck in 2000 with those colors.

    parent root
    5 points Humillionaire

I feel the forest green, red, and cream is a timeless colour scheme, they're complimentary colours and have a good contrast of values so it doesn't really age in my eyes. They're kind of cozy naturalistic colours that suit the location. The bright green and yellow clash and to me look more dated but of course that's the point of a retro jersey. I'm a sucker for throwbacks regardless though

    parent root
    2 points Admirable-Scarcity-8

Really? I find them kind of bland looking. I much prefer their originals from the early 2000’s.

Even then I find myself liking the Green, Yellow & White colour scheme way more.

    parent root
    5 points Humillionaire

I don't really like the look of bright green and yellow together, but forest green + cream with the maroon stripe is so harmonious. The north star colours are quite dazzling and loud together, and it doesn't work very well with the illustration in the logo.

It's also why I like the old Moosehead cans

    https://preview.redd.it/aoirxp6p9edg1.jpeg?width=286&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c385b2918d9a25f2663b2d8a570157ff0b01fefb

I might be dumb but I feel dumber than usual because I literally just realized the negative-space H in the Whalers logo

Fun Fact: Carolina continued that tradition. In the Hurricanes double-flag logo the negative space in-between is shaped like the outline of North Carolina.

The reading teacher at my elementary school, Mr. Eich, would run copies of NHL, MLB, NBA, and NFL logos and give them out to us after school. Wow, what a blast from the past :)

I like how the penguins have barely changed. Sure, they had a stint as the robo-penguin but then they changed back.

This is triggering like a reflex smell memory of our old hockey table that we played the paint off of as kids, that had all these exact logos along the side of it.

is it really a throwback when so many of these were later brought back in some capacity or, at most, were slightly altered? even the teams that were killed off had their corpses brought back as throwbacks.

Reminds me of when I would fill up those Panini sticker books. The company would send me the stickers I needed to complete my book if I sent back a certain amount of empty sticker packs!

This was what eventually got me into collecting hockey cards as a kid.

I used to have a Marian Stastny Nordiques jersey back in the day. Goddammed I loved that jersey. I keep thinking I want to get one of the new Avalanche throwbacks but jerseys are ridiculously expensive nowadays.

These logos remind me of an awsome NHL puck display a couple of friends of mines fathers had in their basements with these logos. I always wanted one for myself

As a kid I thought they were named the Buffalo Savers, and what the buffalo were being saved from was that giant pair of scissors.
