Recently finished this from-scratch shiplap hidden bookcase/murphy door as a fun way to conceal the stairs up to our bonus room.
I was aiming for quiet operation - it doesn’t latch; it's held closed by a couple strong magnets with a small air gap that keeps the door firmly in place. Additionally, the book-pull is just a gimmick that rides on 3D-printed rails to provide something to grab onto and free from the magnets.
No vid of bonus room? :(
Just a boring guest room with attic access and a basic gaming setup. Nothing worth videoing the trek up the stairs :)
SHOW THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT
OK OK FINE
BONUS ROOM? More like I’m hiding leave me the fuck alone!
Thank you. I needed to know to feel at peace.
ic light and steelers shit spotted 👀🤙🏼
Nice Bad Religion vinyls! What's wrong with attitude?
Ya-hey good taste modern man
Just had to give in, didn't you? A tiny bit of pressure and you cave!
I'm weak for the karma 😂
Lol, great work by the way!
Good poster selection
Why is there a wheel besides the TV?
It's an autographed wheel that Team Skorpios used in a BattleBots match.
Sex room
What about that little door? Can we see in there?
Nice
I'm a bit disappointed that we didn't get Rick rolled
Bro that's awesome. Id install a bathroom and make that a sex room for sure but that's just me
"Just a boring secret room with ITS OWN SECRET STAIRCASE No big deal. You dont need to see it."
The trim at the bottom gives it away but it’s a cool setup
That looks great and good call using magnets to keep it closed.
That’s what I usually use it all my hides. I know a lot of people like RFID and everything, but that could be found with certain things and magnets don’t have batteries that die.
One of the most seamlessly hidden doors I’ve seen here, kudos.
Love it!
What's it look like from inside the stairs when the door is closed? How do you open the door?
It's held closed by magnets with a slight air gap, so you simply push.

I suggest putting more books on those shelves. In that way, only you know which book to pull. Now it is pretty easy for everyone to open the door.
And if remembering the right book is difficult, you can place some symbol on it, which means something for you, but to others it does not mean anything.
Please please please tell me that you took some pictures of the building process and that you’re willing to upload them! Outward swinging hidden doors like this are tough to pull off! I made one with a pivot hinge too but it didn’t come out nearly as good as what you’ve done!
Sorry, no meaningful progress pics/instructions to share. I watched a few YouTube videos to get a general idea of how the doors work and how to plan out spacing/sizing, and then just sort of fumbled my way through it.
Let me know if you have any specific questions and I can try to answer!
The vertical split in the baseboard gives it away.
For sure, there's a few spots I would've liked to redo planning-wise. Luckily this is a tight hallway where no one would really be staring at it for long (and just for fun anyway)
Still a very well done and clean build, doesn't stand out.
Nice
What’s the hinge like? Is it built on the standard three door hinges?
Pivot hinge on the top and bottom. I used the TamBee brand where the door basically sits on a steel ball at the bottom, and on the top there's a pin that drops down to hold it.
That's so fun!!
Nice!
Or is it a play room ?
It needs a finger print reader on that book to keep it locked. My kids would show all their friends who would tell everyone about it. 😞
What magnet/opening mechanism did you use?
Mounted an adjustable block to the stairs so I could control the air gap, attached two magnets there and one on the door itself lined up to be centered between them.

This is fantastic! Thank you so much for sharing!!
That isn't hidden at all.
