• If my wife ever surprised me with a car, I’d be so upset. That’s a huge financial decision for us to make together.

You must be fun at parties

Dude he has a point. A car is a fucking ludicrous gift unless there is A LOT of conversation around it beforehand. I mean they don’t exactly live in a million dollar house. For a normal couple you need to game plan and discuss a huge financial decision like that.

Good luck being a grown up one day

What if mom is well off and they paid cash? 8/10 millionaires in the US are first generation rich and got that way by being frugal. They’re obviously not young and maybe she spent what amounts to little on it

Most of those millionaires in the US have the majority of their wealth tied up in their home and retirement. The cash movement just isn’t there

It’s so funny how you can speak for millions of people and if someone can afford to buy a car lmao. Go to bed, kid

Bro thinks net worth = liquidity

    Read a book

This is true. All my money is tied in the stock market.

Bro thinks rich people don’t have both

    Ok buddy lol

I mean its true. Nad those with family money usually are broke by the third generation. Most millionaires are self made and family money does not last as long as people thing it does.

Maybe she bought it herself. Maybe they’re rich. Maybe everyone in the family financed it together. There are lots of explanations, no need to be a prick.

Yeah maybe she bought it herself, my husband and I each have a car and we each pay our own car note. We also don't share bank accounts.

Lol i dunno where you live, but where i live, thats a million dollar home 😂😭

I mean if you live in a hol sure it could be a million, or 12 million depending on where you live. But it could just as easily be 200k in some paets of the country. Hell theres some houses that look like that style in my area for 345k. Most plases are not stupidly high cost.

I know values have gone up some, but bro absolutely no shot it actually is

Try southwest Florida. For something like this, if it’s not a million, it’s just under it

Yeah those houses across the street would be 1-1.5m in parts of the northeast

Came back to see a ton of replies. The sub is happy crying dads not r/FinancialHighGround. Let the guy have his joy!

Depending where they live, that house could definitely be a million dollars

Bro this is a 2006 Ford mustang, not a brand new car. At most these things go for 11k, if you see the houses around where they live they clearly can afford it.

THIS. A friends dad bought a fishing boat without talking to his wife about it and they were NOT well off. It became one of the reasons why they eventually got divorced. Poor financial decisions can put a strain on relationships

That is a fairly nice house and that car is no more than $6k. Are you 12 or do you just have no understanding of home prices and car values?

What kind of Mustang is only $6k? Genuinely asking, not a car person at all.

It’s a 20 year old base model mustang. That’s why it’s $6k. If anyone pays more than $6k for that they’ve been robbed. Before Covid that was a $4k car

    This comment is bait

How do you figure? Is it the mustang or the house comment that’s bait? Because it’s a base V6 mustang and where I’m at that’s a $450k-$500k house

    I agree its a 20 year old car 6-8k for a v8 version

Thanks for confirming I’m not a crazy person

I had no idea the year of it you're right. My bad bro!

Looks like they can afford it

Give you worst enemy a puppy. Straddle them with a decade worth of money spent on food, toys and medical bills. Gift them happiness and a companion and the excruciating pain of losing a loved one.

Just say you’re broke lol, they don’t look like they’re struggling for cash. I assume they know what they’re doing.

    Source: am broke

Yall are both making a lot of assumptions, man's happy, be happy with him and move on.

Has it never occurred to you that maybe she saved up for it for a long time because she knows her husband wants it? Tf is up with people

Whoa calm down. Whatever happened in this situation surprising your significant other with a car is a move you need to be damn sure of. That’s my only point

SNL Lexus December to Remember!!! 🚘

This is the least reasonable place to use that. In a married relationship your money is more or less shared. Going off and spending thousands as a surprise is almost never going to be seen in a good way.

    Username checks out.

Nah he’s right. Also what a dumb, tired comment.

I'm so glad you said that, so I can block you. I fucking hate when there is something to take serious, and people like you always pop up to be shitty.

You must be fun at parties

Seems like his wife knew pretty well that it would work out OK by him.

Don’t know anyone’s situation but if I were a betting man- I’d say the house/neighborhood/truck in the driveway would indicate they’ll be just fineeeee

    They’ll be financing*

Ditto. Reminds me of that SNL Lexus skit lol.

Unless she’s independently wealthy, 100% agree. My wife would flip her shit if I did this for her, no matter how much she loves the car. It’s “our” money, so anything over a hundred or two (depending on the bucket) we’re deciding together.

It’s like a 20 year old mustang at this point. Not exactly a massive investment at this point.

Yeah. It's a pre-facelift 3-valve S197. It's a minimum of 16 years old at this point. You can get really nice examples for sub-10k if you're patient and watch the market, and middle-of-the-road examples can be found for sub-7.5k.

Once the coyote cars hit the market the mod motor cars dropped off the value cliff, and they aren't old enough to start climbing up the "classic and desirable" side of the depreciation curve.

It's not like she went out and bought him a brand-new Dark Horse or something.

Well luckily this person isn't you, so maybe let people enjoy the wholesomeness on their screen??

Saw this without sound: I thought his kids bought it for him.

That’s usually what i see in these videos. Kids pool money together to buy dad a car

Ehh, its an older used mustang, not crazy expensive, very conceivable that she saved and paid cash for something he wanted but wouldn't buy for himself

I agree, and also if she knew you wanted it, you’d been planning the finances, etc. then it could easily be done without a huge fuss.

Eh, my husband and I don’t really share finances for the most part. We’ve got a small little house that’s fully paid off in a decent enough neighborhood. I could buy him a nice car and pay cash if I thought he’d appreciate it. Really depends on the couple.

    God this website sucks

    It’s a used v6 mustang, it’s not that huge a decision

That would be a huge financial decision... for us.

You see where they live? They're easily pulling in 500k a year. And that is by no means a 'new' mustang. They got money to play with.

Thinking they must make 500k a year because they leave in a basic track home in Arkansas is crazy lol

My ex financed a Xbox s a little after they came out from a payday loan place. It was a nice gift but even young me knew paying 250% of what it’s worth was dumb.

My wife is the only person I’d trust with my life without even a skip of the heart, if she made the choice I trust we could afford it.

It was a December to remember, plus o% aper.

My husband has done it three times now. An Outback when I was pregnant, Harley postpartum, and a Highlander when we had another baby. He thinks he’s so funny. Like, every time he does it, it just gets funnier to him, even though I’m obviously annoyed with it 😂😂😂 part of his reason for doing it is likely my struggle to land on decisions. We will be discussing vehicles for months and I’ll just get exhausted by talking specs lol

I’m with you bro. Communication + planning > surprise

Some people have separate economies and don't involve themselves in their partners budgeting as long as all bills are paid.

Maybe she paid for it in full with her own money or she paid most of it. I don’t know their finances. You do have a great point, don’t get me wrong.

Well, I’m glad you’re not married to that guy!

Some people have split finances. If she bought it from personal savings or paying on it from her personal finances, then it's not that impactful to him

How do you know she hasn't been saving up for it for a while? Not every car purchase is financing. He clearly was not upset.

Bro. Look outside. You are welcome.

  • I wish I could do something nice for my parents.

Heartfelt words will go a long way.

Not as far as a mustang would tho lol.

the lamborfeeties always got em 😌

My kid gave me a hug and told me I was the best! Best gift ever! Give them a hug!

If that’s the way you feel. I’m sure the greatest gift your parents could get from you is simply seeing you happy. 👍

I don’t have much money, my gift for my parents was to digitize and organize all our home videos and photos in my free time.

They said it was the best gift they’ve ever got and it only cost my $50 for the scanner/adapters and some free time in the evenings and weekends.

  • That "YEAHHHHH!" when he got outside came straight from his kid heart! So happy to see.

  • Perfect post for this sub. 🥲

Hope he has a blast with the car.

  • Yeah that black one in the driveway with the giant bow you saw earlier, the one you mentioned.

    How is it a surprise?

He said it was down the street. Someone probably moved it into the driveway and put the bow on it while they were opening presents or something.

😭 half of using Reddit is just interpreting deeper context for media illiterate people

lol that’s all I could think

  • What sweet joy.

  • That’s a sexy car….GodSpeed my friend.

  • Pretty sure this is an viral ad.

  • I wish we could see him on his first drive. Pretty cool. I wish I could do this for my dad.

  • I showed my kids this video. They laughed in my face.

  • He wanted a 66 but still loved it for the fam

  • Oh, dude! What a feeling! I bought my Mustang 2 1/2 years ago, and I still say, "Hello, Beautiful!" every time I go into the garage.

  • This is … so American, lol

A new nice car is exciting? Thats not just an American emotion lmao.

This is not a European reaction

Ah yes Hans you have procured my dream gift. I am so very happy. °_°

    Nailed it

Absolutely no idea why I got downvoted. This is a very American reaction

What would the reaction be like? Just scared to show emotion and trying to be cool or what? Genuinely curious

It’s got nothing to do with being cool. I’m here for happy crying dads. No idea what the problem is here.

Europeans don’t show emotions like this. Neither is a bad thing.

Shocked that someone actually spends that much on a present for you. If my wife bought me a car for christmas I‘d be furious as to what made her think she could just go out and about to buy me a car, it makes me live the financial fear of the next 20 years in the next 20 seconds. I am not going around town buying her expensive stuff because I know I can‘t afford it, and I would sure as hell hope she knows that too, because if not, then I will already fill my bankrupcy papers because I will need them sooner rather than later

And not everybody is in your financial situation. Why are you being such a buzzkill for absolutely no reason?

I just answered honestly to a question being asked as „genuinly curious“ and I can wholeheartedly say, that as long as I don‘t have the kind of money where buying a new car is something that is on my mind a lot because I could potentially do it, that I wouldn‘t feel very great about my wife gifting one to me. Someone else whose finances are none of my buisness would just be genuine disbelief as to how someone can just gift something that expensive to someone. And I didn‘t want to be a buzzkill, I feel happy for that guy and I hope he is still happy about his gift, it is just not how it would turn out for me or most germans I‘d say.

Cool? Once again people are different situations and places than you are. However your German friends would react is completely and totally irrelevant

Sounds like you're not in a position to be able to afford a gift this nice for her.

Feel sorry for your self for choosing the industry that pays moderately but doesn't allow you frivolous spending like this.

As someone said above, nice words to a long way.

If you can't afford it, don't bemoan others who can.

What, happiness? Sounds like a you problem mate

I don’t really understand the issue.

This IS a very American reaction but nobody has said that’s a bad thing, including me. And yet there’s a lot of hurt feelings going on

It's not an issue, you just said something that is weird and doesnt make sense. Though you should understand the way you said it made it sound negative.

This IS a very American reaction

what about it is American? Anyone surprised with a sports car would have that reaction, I assure you. Regardless the country.

I wouldn’t react like this. There is no universal reaction to news like this. You can’t believe that.

I hear people on my radio every morning win thousands of pounds who don’t react like this. I’m in the UK and we are more reserved, that’s just who we are culturally. I find it really disingenuous from you to sit pretending you don’t think Americans are more open with their feelings and emotions like this. I don’t see the problem with just admitting that’s a thing.

    I wouldn’t react like this.

    Ok?

There is no universal reaction to news like this. You can’t believe that.

I dont, that's why I said "anyone," not "everyone"

I hear people on my radio every morning win thousands of pounds who don’t react like this.

    Again, ok? And?

I’m in the UK and we are more reserved, that’s just who we are culturally.

Your country isn't the rest of the world.

I find it really disingenuous from you to sit pretending you don’t think Americans are more open with their feelings and emotions like this. I don’t see the problem with just admitting that’s a thing.

I can't help you if you misrepresent what I said, intentionally or not. This is just a really weird hill to die on man.

If you wanna be pedantic after claiming “anyone would react like this regardless of country” but also you didn’t say everyone, then cool.

I feel like it’s YOU dying on the hill that Americans and Europeans aren’t culturally different. That’s what your entire point was/is. I don’t know why you’re also acting like you’re not saying that AND some kind of defence mode that it’s bad to act this way when it isn’t.

You pretending you don’t understand my point of comparing a large monetary win with being gifted a sports car, and the reaction from it is bizarre.

My country is in Europe. I’ve been to, lived in, worked with Europeans my entire 41 years. I have an idea of who and what they are and how we react to situations like this. I’m struggling with what part of this is hard for you to understand

If you wanna be pedantic after claiming “anyone would react like this regardless of country” but also you didn’t say everyone, then cool.

    It's basic English

I feel like it’s YOU dying on the hill that Americans and Europeans aren’t culturally different. That’s what your entire point was/is.

Not what I said, nor my point.

You pretending you don’t understand my point of comparing a large monetary win with being gifted a sports car, and the reaction from it is bizarre.

Not what I said. I understand, your few examples of radio winners means nothing to the body of this conversation, just as much as you said "well I wouldn’t do this". Ok, I dont care

My country is in Europe. I’ve been to, lived in, worked with Europeans my entire 41 years. I have an idea of who and what they are and how we react to situations like this. I’m struggling with what part of this is hard for you to understand

The part where you misrepresent what I said because it's the only way you can attack it. Also, there's a Brexit joke in here but I can't be arsed to make it up.

Anyway, I'm done here. All these words and you missed all of my points. It's not really entertaining anymore. Have a good one mate

I can't speak for all of Europe, but it's definitely not a French reaction.

A lot of people seem a bit precious about the comment. Just cos most of Europe wouldn’t react like this doesn’t mean this guys reaction is a bad thing 🤷🏻

  • He didn’t hear it pull into the driveway before they took this video ??????

    That’s a v6 - the ones you hear are v8.

  • Happy for him, just thought the mustang was going to be…way older. Like from the 60’s.

  • That man is loved!!! 😊

  • Thats one Happy Family :)

  • 💯🥰🥰🥰👍🏽

  • The joy in that run!

  • Wow they chose really well even with the lil spoiler, beautiful car

  • That’s his “Gone in 60 Seconds” moment for sure. Mine would be a dent-side Ford Highboy. That said, my disabilities have led me to a place where I can’t afford a car; so any car would mean the world to me.

  • The dude most have a lot of love for everyone in his family, glad it made his Christmas

  • What a sweet and beautiful moment. 🥹☺️ These are the kinds of moments that make holidays feel so special and magical. My siblings and I dreamt of surprising our dad with a beautifully restored Corvette. When I lightheartedly brought it up last year, he said that it wouldn't be fun anymore because Mom is no longer with us. His real dream was being able to zoom around town in a convertible with my mom in the seat next to him, her hair blowing in the wind. My dad said that when he and my mom were only dating, he had a motorcycle. He loved watching the other guys in the neighborhood look jealous as he rode around with my mom on the back, her pretty, long blonde hair blowing in the wind from under the helmet. He dreamt of showing her off again, this time it would be while driving his favorite muscle car. They were married for 47 years and he says that he always felt like the luckiest man in the world because my mom chose him.

  • I'm happy for the man but the mustang is such a pos.

  • That man is loved and appreciated

  • Wait… You mean the one in our driveway with the GIANT BOW on it that I literally walked next to on my way inside..??!?!
