Precision cut foam edition

Alt text: SOLD Remington MSR Deployment Kit, Sale Price $36,225.00

  • Picking up my Mark IV today. I've wanted one for over a decade so I'm insanely excited.

Holy shit they will be out for a decade this year

Fell in love with the style as a young teenager shooting my grandpa's MK1/MK2/MK3, not sure which he has. Always lusted after that "Luger we have at home" look, but couldn't justify $400 for a .22 pistol and disassembly was a nightmare until MK4.

  • I got the Sordin Supreme Pro-Xs with gel cups. Can't wait to take them hunting. The hype might just be real.

Lots of diamonds in this one, replicating the original Kolar checkering pattern on a custom Turkish walnut stock sent in. 24 lines per inch spacing.

Lots of diamonds in this one

    Ooooooo want to touch

  • Might be a spendy weekend in tractor maintenance. My little 40hp New Holland just turned over 120hrs, which according to the manual is 70hrs over the suggested first engine oil change. Whoopsiedoodle. So I bought engine oil and filter last week.

Then I read further through the manual and learned that NH also suggests changing the hydraulic and hydrostatic fluids after 50hrs as well. 300hrs used to be the changeout interval for those fluids IIRC, but I guess NH errs on the side of caution nowadays after break in. Best to play it safe, I guess.

  • I know I have time on this, but in the market for another 300m Benchrest scope. My Hart .30cal blank comes in Tuesday and I have the reamer and gauges already so ostensibly I could have a working gun by Friday if I get the shop time away from my daughter to turn it.

Requirements are fixed 40x+ magnification and 1/8 MOA turrets (will be for 300m for-score so I do need the 1/8 MOA adjustments). Tube size doesn't matter, ring pattern doesn't matter.

Current benchrest rifle is wearing a now-discontinued Leupold LCS 40x and I'm happy with it but the few used ones I am seeing are now twice the price they were when new.

Should I go March? Sightron? IOR? I don't have a defined budget but this will be a "cheap" benchrest rifle in that I got the action for free and will be turning my own barrels for it, meaning the only things I'm spending "real" money on are the scope and stock.

Damn, I forgot SWFA only goes up to 20x. I’ve had good experiences with Sighteon, but I haven’t had any recent experience with them

A lot of the guys I shoot with use Sightron for their 100m rigs but say they're a bit lacking for 300m, even at the high mags. Aberrations and such. Older Leupolds seem to be the best represented by a mile, more than 60% of our club uses either the 40x or 45x model of the LCI.

I used to have an LCS 40x and indeed it would be perfect. Sightron seems to be a decent "lower" priced option.

Whats this gonna be chambered in?

Switchbarrel, .30BR and probably 6mm GT but definitely some flavor of 6mmBR derivative.

  • God fucking damn.

Griffin update, they're shipping me a new SNACH and asked for the old one back. Me update, holy fuck I forgot how much adrenaline tired sucks.

At least they’re taking care of you

  • Scored .223 and .30-06 dies off the reloading discord. Now to start stockpiling components...

  • I think he's just talking about it having an overbored or back bored barrel. I don't know the specific dimensions to compare with him saying 10 gauge, but nothing seems overtly incorrect to me. Maybe back boring doesn't do the things he says, but that's certainly how it's been marketed every time I've see it.

I thought you were the Shotgun Man, you don't know about overbored barrels?

Sakana's right, I think there's some misunderstanding in how the bore dimensions work. The 835 bores don't taper down to the .729" (12ga) neighborhood at any point, there just isn't much of a forcing cone as they go from about .8" in the chamber to .775". They don't take normal 12ga chokes, the Accu-Mags are closer to a 10ga. My brother has one, can confirm it is a good goose and turkey gun. Recoil is comparable to a sledgehammer with a 3 1/2" 2oz turkey load.

Recoil is comparable to a sledgehammer with a 3 1/2" 2oz turkey load.

Whereas the mighty 10 is only a mild push with the same load lol.

Its true. Back in my gun shop era when I was testing used guns, I had the opportunity to fire a Rem 870 Super Mag 3 1/2" and Browning BPS 10 side by side. It wasn't my first rodeo with a Super Mag (uncle has one on his farm) and I knew what was coming. The BPS really surprised me with how much less it actually recoiled. All that additional weight really makes a difference, especially when the 3 1/2" 12 only weighs 7 1/2 pounds.

Considering how much fucking heavier most 10ga shotguns are? Yeah pretty much.

I've got a bunch of them--BPS, Ithaca Mag-10, Remington SP10, Browning Gold--all are pretty pleasant to shoot even with the modern HV waterfowl stuff like Black Cloud Snow Goose that normally kicks the shit out of me in an 8-9lb 12ga. Your arms will get tired from swinging the damn thing long before your shoulder gets sore, but you're hopefully not hunting anything that makes quick maneuvers because you're not keeping up with those.

They also universally pattern phenomenally compared to every 3.5" 12ga I've shot.

I'm far too tired to think hard about this.

I was curious when they were introduced and apparently it was in 1988 and developed with Federal for the new 12ga 3 1/2" shell. First shotgun chambered for the 3 1/2". It seems plausible to me that it could work a lot better with the big steel like BB-F shot.

My brother has an 835 and I have a box of 3 1/2" T steel shells from an estate, it would be interesting to see how they actually pattern out of it.

    Remember, T is for Teal!

And I've never gotten T-shot to pattern well in anything, including 10ga. It's just too damn big. I've even given up on BB's in 12ga and won't shoot larger than #1s, I feel the extra pattern density hedging towards a head/neck hit outweighs the seemingly marginal extra penetration from the bigger pellet. Also you can't shoot a duck in the ass enough to bring it down anywhere you can recover it so shot placement matters, lol.

I think you could shoot 2s at everything and I'm not entirely kidding. Shot placement is everything.

I prefer 1s, at least in my guns they seem to pattern better across shell brands, but yeah I've had good luck with them and 2's all the way up through sandhill cranes.

I've shot Federal #T 1-1/2 ounce cartridges out of my 10 and I was quite impressed with them. I normally shoot Black Cloud #BB 1-5/8 ounce cartridges but now looking back on these I may have to get a few boxes of #T for the big birds like Brant, Swans, and Cranes.

Edit: both plates were shot at 40 yards.

  • Thinking about shooting the first match of the year tomorrow but there's a 50% chance of rain starting basically right in the middle of it so I don't know if I want to risk it.

Work was remarkably well-behaved this week, really could use some more projects though as I'm pretty underutilized. Hopefully in the new year we get some new business as I've been quiet for the last quarter or so.

  • Ordered a basic bitch Ruger Blackhawk through my LGS so I can pretend to be a cowboy. Another store in town happens to have a decent deal on Wranglers right now too… Does anyone know if I’d have to fill out a 3310.4 form if I were to buy both within 5 days of each other, or does that only apply to multiple handgun sales from the same dealer?

  • On one hand, I'm craving a burger. A good cheese burger, from Apollo Burger. On the other hand, I do have lunch already prepped. Should I be responsible, or should I be happy, such is the question of life.

Just a random shower thought, but I like the look of original Glocks more than Glock clones. I've shot numerous different custom Glocks and 3rd party builds, but I always find the stock Glocks to look better and attract me more.

Also my friend signed his job offer letter with the company I work at, his background is cleared and he's officially on board. So I'm excited for that. I'm buddies with the guys in charge of training at our company and I told them to pick on him all they want. They're cool guys, so I'm hoping it'll be fun for all of them.

Also our company is moving to a new schedule, so now instead of the usual 7am-4pm everyone is on, we now get to pick/bid for a preferred schedule. 6am-3pm, 7am-4pm, 8am-5pm, 9am-6pm. I can't really decide which one, do you guys have a preference?

Be responsible today, and be happy about it. My wife and I have an "eating out" budget, it helps us cut down on going out too much.

My wife and I have an "eating out" budget

I'm not mature enough to read this with a straight face

I need to set a monthly ice cream and cheesecake budget. Those little cheesecake sampler things they sell at the dollar store are my weakness.

I was responsible and i am amicably indifferent about it. I did not eat out. Great success.

As someone who struggles with binge eating and my weight, I've instituted a cooling off period for my cravings. If I'm really hankering for something for three days in a row, then I'll get it. And it has to be something local or homemade, absolutely no fast food.

6am-3pm, but I’m an early bird anyway. But being able to be completely free in the afternoon is nice. I still miss my 6-2:30 schedule

thats my first pick too, I like early sleep and early rise, and driving home at 3in the afternoon would probably feel blissful.

But tha means I’m locked into going to the gym after work, and not at night.

But you should hopefully miss the busyness of everyone getting off at 4/5. 6-3 is our schedule, and I love getting off early enough to still do things. Plus don’t have to deal with morning traffic.

    7-4 would be my preference

dang, that was my least favorite option. It doesn't give me enough time in the morning to get a full workout in due to my gym hours, but starts early enough that I don't want to stay up late and go when the busyness dies down at night. And 4pm is the beginning of rush hour traffic too.

Yeah I have none of those problems, lol. I dont go to a gym and rush hour lasts from 1400-2000hrs so it doesnt matter when I get off.

But I do like having the sun up both coming and going for at least most of the year and 6-3 or 8-5 dont offer that.

    6-3 for sure, no question.

I'm not a huge Glock fan, but I admit they're great guns. That being said, any Glock clone I've seen falls into one of three categories: way too expensive for what's still just a Glock (Zev, Shadow Systems), the same price as a Glock so you might as well just get a Glock, or super cheap and sacrificing the legendary reliability of the Glock.

Which all of those just points back to a Glock asking “Why didn’t you just get a Glock in the first place?”.

I’ve carried my Glock 17 for work for 3 years, I’ve carried for CCW for even longer, and have a few thoysand rounds through my Glock. I don’t have a strong love for it, but I can’t break free from it either. I struggle to rationalize owning more than one Glock, but it’s the most practical one I can own and shoot.

  • There's a Colt rail gun on gafs that I've been watching. The longer it sits unsold, the harder my ability to pass it up. I've always wanted a Springfield Operator, but I think a Colt could be a good substitute.

Is GAFS now a separate site?

They created their own website after the sub got shut down. For now it's an invite only beta, but they do periodic invite waves on their discord.

  • Just pulled the trigger (no pun intended) on the Leupold MK4 M110 Gov Scope. This M110 clone is getting absurdly expensive. $9000 for the KAC ECR, $1300 for the stock, $3000 for the URX II rail, $500 for the gas block, $180 for the KAC taupe pistol grip, $150 for the three KAC taupe rib panels. $700 for gunsmithing and cerakote. Now, $2500 for the scope and cantilever mount. Total comes out to $17,330 before acquiring the flash hider, bipod mount + Harris bipod, and suppressor. In today’s aftermarket pricing, these parts are another $8k. Few months ago, I scoffed at the 100% KAC complete clone with the suppressor that was $20k for everything. Seems much cheaper in retrospect than building my own. 0/10 recommend going down this rabbit hole.

Nice, about time they got around to it
