This is Siri, she was rescued from a feral colony 7 years ago and the question still stands as to what breed she is. I realized I could use the internet to my advantage and ask Reddit so here I am ;)!
To add to what the previous commenter said, this is not because of snobbery, it's because when it comes to cats a random set of traits can appear making them look a bit like an xyz breed without having any connection to that breed.
Also, when it comes to the colour and patterns, it's nothing more than a pigmentation. There is a lot of lore about ginger cats being certain way or torties being another.
It's as silly as saying that all blonde people are certain way, whilst all curly hair people are another.
Obv, the jokes are great e.g. one orange braincell, but they are not rooted in reality.

Huh, I did not know that could happen. So things like tall ears with tufts and a comparatively larger body size or a colorpoint pattern can show up without there being a pedigreed cat associated with those traits close by in the family tree?
this is correct! there are very, very few traits that can be used to definitively say that a cat almost certainly has purebred ancestry, because everything else originated in the randombred population. people liked it, took a few of those cats with those interesting traits and developed them into “breeds”…. and the rest were left behind and continued produce those traits without any relation to the breed at all. and thats only for the traits that were exclusive to a single area in the first place, like the colorpoint patterns. the rest— large size, ear tufts, spotted tabby pattern, long fur, a completely pitch black pelt— have occurred in populations independently across the world, with no relation to other populations that the traits occurred in, let alone any breeds.
there are a few patterns that are exceptions— it is impossible for a cat to have rosettes without some bengal ancestry, because the pattern comes from being hybrids with the asian leopard cat, and the high expression of silver and golden that occur in the shaded patterns wont occur without targeted breeding, sunshine and phoenix and amber are all but exclusive to their particular breeds— but overall, a cat generally has to look like a breed to even have suspicions of being a mix. and by “look like”, i mean that the eye shape, where theyre placed on the head, the quality of they eye and coat color, the quality of the fur itself (whether its texture matches the breeds texture), the cheekbones and ears and muzzle shape, where the tail attaches to the body and how the body is put together… many of these, which often arent apparent to the untrained eye, are needed to make a cat actually resemble a breed, and not just one or two traits that happen to appear in a population. color on its own will almost never indicate breed ancestry, and one or two traits by themselves pretty much the same.
sorry if that was long winded. ops kitten is blue with high white spotting .^
No, I appreciate the in-depth answer! So there's a pretty long checklist to cover, not just one or two features.
If I ignore these two traits of the particular cat I am thinking of, he probably just resembles... cat
The coloring can be described as piebald, which means the cat has white parts and coloured parts. I was looking up how to describe my own cats colour recently! You can google it and there are different names for patten types etc
Beautiful girl! Domestic shorthair for sure as others have said. Related to her fur, def bicolor/patched possibly dilute (dilute if the colours are more faded/grey as opposed to black).
Prior to this thread I didn’t know cats don’t come in different breed as opposed to dogs. She is our first cat and she is also a rescue, so she didn’t have papers, heightening our confusion as to what she could’ve been. Just wanted to ask for help.
Cats are rarely identified by a breed, unless they have papers confirming they have been bred specifically (Maine Coon for example).
What you have is a perfectly beautiful domestic shorthair.
I agree. This is a DSH inkblot (unofficially)
Wow, I didn’t know that! Learn something new every day. Thank you!

Thank you for your service.
Like the other commenter said, domestic shorthair. But I wanted to add that she’s beautiful!
Thank you <3 She truly is one of a kind
breed: CUTIE Variety: PATOOTIE
Unless she has papers I think it's pretty safe to assume that you have a "cat."
Meow mix
Oof! That one toe just slays me! So heart-crushingly cute!
(I would venture to say “cow-cat” markings?)
A cute one
Cats don’t work like dogs. No papers.. you have a cat.

I would say “why not both, cactus are really cool?” Except this big fluffy foodie would probably try to eat it.
We had to put the houseplants out of his reach 🤣🤦♂️

If it's not obvious, like Siamese or Persian for example, and no papers, then domestic [length of fur]. In other words, Cat.

I'm sorry, it's just that most cat subreddits are full of wall-to-wall nothing but this and it's genuinely exhausting 😂
