My husband and I are moving from the US to Wuppertal, Germany on February 1st. We have two cats who currently eat Purina One in salmon flavor. One of them has a super sensitive stomach so I'm a bit worried about the switch to a new food. What is the best food to get, and where should we get it from?
The german approach to pet Food is different to the US. While you get the big names like Purina, Hills and so on, there are a lot of much better options.
Regarding catfood you might want to check out this shop: https://www.sandras-tieroase.de/ They only have very good options. If you want shop local you can use the brands at reference. Some of them are avaiable at pet shops too
Sandra is the best!
Purine is not even half decent cat food. You can check on websites of zooplus and futterhause what is available but purina will be there as it is rather supermarket food.
If you're looking for good, let alone "the best" cat food, stay clear from Purina.
Try Orijen, Real Nature, Wildes Land, Leonardo. And, wet food.
As the other redditor said, you can still get Purina here. You can also order cat food online, for example from tierarzt24.de or fressnapf.de.
When my cat had stomach problems (he had gastric ulcer…not sure if that is the right translation), our vet told us to give him Royal Canin Gastrointestinal for a while, and it worked wonders.
Don't get Purina, Felix and all this stuff. Especially for sensitiv Cats its just shit, with a lot of sugar and wheat. Try barfing. There are a lot of Special Shops or at least animal Shops to get it. Otherwise try at least animonda or Carney
And by barfing, this commenter means raw feeding.
BARF = biologisch artgerechte RohFütterung and has nothing to do with, well… the English word barfing ;)
Thanks for clearing this up. I was wondering why suggesting to try to make the cat barf...
Thank you for the clarification, im working on my german but hadnt heard that one before
True. Didn't come to mind that it isnt a english Word. Thanks for clarification.
Transitioned a sensitive stomach US kitty over to German food. His GI issues are mainly anxiety induced, but he's done so well on the food here. He LOVES the food we get from Sandra's Tieroase. His current favorites are Tasty Cat, Animonda and Sandra's own brand. The food here is top quality.
My American kitty LOVES the German cat food brands here, her coat has never been healthier!
That's a good point! Our kitty's coat is also sleek and shiny here too. :)
Purina is still available in major pet food chains like Fressnapf but I have had good experience with the local brand Happy Cat as well. Maybe worth checking out?
Purina is owned by nestle there is that.
Purina One is available in Germany. We get ours from Rossmann, but many other outlets have it as well.
It's possible that the purina in germany has different ingredients than the one from the u.s. Since she has a sensitive stomach, I would gradually introduce the german purina to her.
We buy our cats food from Mac’s. As rule of thumb, you should make sure that the food they eat has at least 80% meat content and a high taurine concentration. What’s also really good is that that they (Mac’s) tell you where the food comes from (like 23% chicken hearts, 50% beef muscle etc). This is important, because this way you know that your cats don’t just get really over-processed meat with grinded bones or whatever, but actually qualitative food. Generally it’s cheaper to buy in bulk and use sale codes that you find online (you can easily get up to 20-25% off).
You will find pet food is so much better in Germany than in the United States
Try asking r/Katzengruppe and r/Kratzbaum. Cat food is a serious topic on there lol

Purina One Salmon is standard pet food in Germany. You’ll get it at every supermarket, even in every discounter. I mean, it’s Nestlé, you could try switching to another brand – we’re currently doing that by mixing other food into it, because our cat didn’t accept anything else besides exactly this purina one salmon.
Wet food is cheap and readily available, using actual meat. Animonda Carny is a great brand. find it on sale. Bozita is a Swedish brand that also has fantastic wet food (gravy kind the cats love - but it is less dense than Carny meat).
Good dry food is also found, but still not that easy to find grain-free or real meat flesh sources for reasonable prices. Crave is a very good one, no oily fur at all.
Mostly wet food with some dry food each day is the most healthy, and keeps their teeth in good order, as only wet food isn't great for ensuring teeth get cleaned.
Zooplus is usually the best prices online. All store prices are pretty terrible compared to online, unfortunately. Newsletter signup discount 10%, and catching when they have sales can save a fair amount, also.
Like others have said, avoid Purina trash. Anything with "Fleisch und tierische Nebenerzeugnisse" is just super nasty extruded stuff from what's left on bones. Even ones that list something"protein" is another word for not meat.
Carny ingredients to use as a reference for real food: Huhn & Lachs: Huhn (61%, Fleisch, Leber, Magen, Herz), Lachs (4%), Mineralstoffe, Rapsöl.
Can usually find them on sale for about 1,50€ a 400g can.
What we consider best cat foods definitely doesn’t include Purina, but you can buy that here as well.
Wet food, no sugar, no grains and ideally 80+% of meat in the food are what’s considered high quality in German cat food. We mostly buy Mjamjam for two of our cats but sometimes switch it up with Carny. If someone is having stomach issues, we buy Kattovit Gastro. For our cat with food allergies, we buy Vetconcept.
As many others have said before me, Purina isn't considered to be a good quality food. You need to look for wet food with a high meat content (no Nebenerzeugnisse that are unlisted, since it means they just use scraps from animals). You need to look for Fleisch and Muskelfleisch (meat and muscle meat, includes heart, liver, lungs.. I think?). They are good for cats. A lot of brands have just 4% meat, the rest is fillers,so not great. Look for 70%ish meat content and above. Some good brands include: - Mjamjam - Tasty Cat - Leonardo - Granatapet - MACs - Sandra's Tierschmankerl - Grau - Catzfinefood - Lucky Lou - Betty's Landhausküche - Animonda Carby - Wildes Land
You can get them at Zooplus or Fressnapf or Sandra's Tieroase.
We make our own homemade cat food. Mass manufactured cat food is horrible
